Westminstenders: Super Saturday

Parliament sits on a Saturday for the first time since the Falklands.

A deal has been reached with the EU. Its utterly shite and worse for the UK than May's deal. It even leaves no deal as an option after transition.

The DUP don't like it. They got predictably shafted.

Tomorrow is a debate and vote on the deal. Amendments are key, in particular the Letwin amendment which seeks to close a loophole in the Benn Act and stop the Deal being adopted tomorrow, instead forcing the ultimate decision over the deal to a later date and forcing an extension.

Which the EU may or may not agree to.

There is also talk of forcing another ref via amendments but this, unlike the Letwin amendment is unlikely to pass.

The vote tomorrow looks to be very tight. The Letwin amendment passes looks likely to make Johnson fail to have the numbers. However there is talk that enough Labour MPs have decided to back the deal.

There is also a big anti Brexit march in London tomorrow (which runs the risk of having problems with the Extinction Rebellion ban). Good luck to everyone going tomorrow.

See you on the other side (which might now be on this thread!!)

derxa After the ref, Corbyn was demanding immediate invocation of A50
and both parties for at least a year had Brexit as policy

If May had held cross-party talks from the beginning and involved all parties, not just the DUP, she would have been much more likely to get a WA that could have passed.
Corbyn is a Lexiter and held that position for a long time - he's still no Remainer even now
Many other Labour MPs for quite some time after the ref were saying MPs should respect the result

There was an opportunity missed all through 2017 to get broader support, but that would have meant allowing broad input too

When Brexit became just a Tory policy done the Tory way, then of course all the other parties would oppose every attempt to pass a Tory bill.

Absolutely riveting to hear what Farage has to say.
i will put that on a 'loop' with my other 'best soundbite' a toilet flushing.
music to the ears of a plumber!

NoWordForFluffy · 19/10/2019 17:34

I don't need to search for my MP's vote. There's never any surprises where Brexit is concerned!

Butterymuffin · 19/10/2019 17:35

Surely better to get the hell on with it?

Without reading the details of what we're signing up to? Would you sign a contract without reading it? What's been asked of MPs by Johnson is ludicrous. Hence Letwin's amendment.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2019 17:35

Louise I meant ex-Tory rebels, so the 22 most recent ones plus the Tigger / Liberal Tories
All those who no longer have the Tory whip

derxa · 19/10/2019 17:35

but if that’s all the backing BJ deal has had from business it’s hardly resounding. Do you have a business? I do albeit a very small business. All this titting about has had catastrophic effects. Have you ever watched the news when business owners are interviewed? They all say the same thing. But then they probably don't have a first in PPE from Oxbridge so their opinion doesn't count.

HateIsNotGood · 19/10/2019 17:36

I feel really sorry for the EU27, poor buggers, all those several hundreds of millions of people hoping that today would bring an end to the uncertainty that affects them too.

But as long as a few million in the UK are happy to continue this 'limbo' in the hope they get their own way eventually, they obviously don't give a shit about the majority of other Europeans their actions affect.

derxa · 19/10/2019 17:38

When Brexit became just a Tory policy done the Tory way, then of course all the other parties would oppose every attempt to pass a Tory bill. Well that's where they all went wrong the stupid twats.

violettrose28 · 19/10/2019 17:39

I’m just praying we can get a second ref out of this - Boris’s deal vs remain. How likely do people think that is?

How likely? About zero percent chance, I reckon

PostNotInHaste · 19/10/2019 17:42

I do too. But the point was made that more time to scrutinise a finance bill is given than Parliament were being given to look at something that will effect the country for years to come.

It never needed to be like this, if May had acted differently at the start it could have been very different . We were artificially divided into two groups, petrol posted on the flames fanned. But we are where you are now and at some point a way forward will have to be found .

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2019 17:42

The Tories, whose project Brexit is, screwed up repeatedly to lose the power to pass bills

After the 2015 GE, they had a working majority with 330 MPs
With the 2017 GE, they lost 13 MPs and their majority, with only 317 MPs
SInce then, under May & especially BJ, they have lost many more MPs and now only have 288 MPs

A minority govt will always have problems getting controversial policies approved, if they don't reach out to other parties and negotiate these policies, compromise

LouiseCollins28 · 19/10/2019 17:43

Yep, heard a few of our MPs talk about trust today. I am a hugely strong admirer of Parliament as an institution.Regrettably, my trust in its current membership as a class has completely gone now Sad

Delay; Avoid; Nonsense; Blocking; Games. All bcause a majority of those who voted voted differently that they assumed they would and they think they know best.

Only one word for my reaction to that: Contempt.

Snowy111 · 19/10/2019 17:44

Derxa the best thing for stability and business would be revoke. Mark carney knows that. Mark carney said the TM deal would’ve been better than the BJ deal. But The people of this country will be better off and able to continue spending in your business if we revoke. With the BJ deal there still will not be certainty - still the possibility of no deal at end of October AND at end of 2020.

We are taking a massive risk with the economy in leaving in the hope of what?

54321go · 19/10/2019 17:44

I'm with You derxa.
small companies can't afford to hire an 'extra pair of hands' to take on all the new paperwork and work around the hassles that Brexit is bringing. The governments 'preparation papers' are less use than bog roll, because nothing has actually been decided yet so it is all speculation and waffle which has not been ratified with the EU or anyone else therefore worthless.

Butterymuffin · 19/10/2019 17:45

How did Rory Stewart vote today?

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2019 17:46

Even now, BJ should be talking to other parties, not just trying to bribe a few rebels
All parties should discuss together how to proceed, how to do this properly, with more widespread consent

However, our Parliamentary system is geared to winner-takes-all, not cooperation & compromise

Snowy111 · 19/10/2019 17:47

I was an advocate of the TM deal in the end. 52:48 is only a mandate for a soft Brexit. I had accepted that, as one of the 48%. But BJ will shaft us all, this is as a deceitful deal as the man himself.

wondering7777 · 19/10/2019 17:47

How did Rory Stewart vote today?

Against!

Snowy111 · 19/10/2019 17:48

Rory Stewart voted against letwin. He wants a deal. Maybe he knew ERG Would withdraw support if letwin passed.

thecatfromjapan · 19/10/2019 17:49

RS is going to be toast in Londin!

BigChocFrenzy · 19/10/2019 17:49

Too few MPs have ever run a business, had to fill in all the forms, had to make a profit
I don't count the sinecures of paid directorships

Too few have even had a job in a company that sells things, where they might at least have some idea of all the complexities

thecatfromjapan · 19/10/2019 17:49

I think the chances of a PV have gone up ... 😁

derxa · 19/10/2019 17:51

Fatshedra · 19/10/2019 17:51

Against what? The delay ?
