I don't really feel qualified to start a Westminstenders thread but we need a new one....

listening - would love to have a even a tiny scrap of toothbrush representing me if there’s a bit left!

Dontlickthetrolley · 18/10/2019 19:53

I've got an ERGer who is wanting no deal. So if he votes with Boris tomorrow it confirms this is a no deal job in 12 months time. Also have Mr Peter Bone and Loathsome in close proximity too.

Any idea what time the votes are tomorrow?

Dontlickthetrolley (I was actually saying that to my 3yo this morning...) I think the votes could go quite late. Depends how many amendments, etc.

Dusty don't despair, it's very unlikely they'll be done before you are marching tomorrow.

ListeningQuietly shout not in my name twice as loudly so my voice can be heard too, please. I'm old, have flu jab booked for tomorrow, and wouldn't have the stamina for the march (or even for getting there) these days! Will certainly be there in spirit - although despite my username I still cannot levitate... and name one of those bristles after me Smile

The Columnist@Sime0nStylites

  1. Some brief thoughts about the Letwin amendment tomorrow.

TLDR - It is very important indeed.
It will very likely pass (just look at the signatories).

  1. The effect of its passage would be to:

i. Effectively defer approval of the Deal until after the related legislation has been passed

ii. As a consequence require the PM to send the extension request letter per the Benn Act

  1. The amendment has three important benefits (IMO).

i) It closes a possible no deal loop hole in the Benn Act

ii) It provides more time for Parliamentary scrutiny of the Deal
Given the complexity and importance of the deal, this is unequivocally a good thing.

  1. iii) It may provide opportunities for Parliament to seek to amend the Deal.
This is, I think, the most important potential consequence of the amendment.
  1. The Deal has elements that Parliament might now have the space to consider.
Incl: the possibility of a WTO exit at the end of trans; the new direction of the future arrangement (ie more distant); the strength of the LPF commitments; and, the pros/cons of the NI ‘frontstop’.
  1. Of course, this all depends on whether or not the EU is willing to provide another extension.
  1. Although I appreciate the fatigue point, it would be surprising if the EU had not already considered there was a high likelihood of another extension given the Johnson government’s lack of a majority.
  1. More importantly, there is virtually no circumstance in which a better informed decision by the UK does not lead to a more durable outcome for the EU.
  1. This is grown-up politics.

All MPs should vote for the Letwin amendment.

/ends.

everythingcrossed · 18/10/2019 20:12

But if the Letwin amendment passes - and it seems very likely that it will - will there even be a vote tomorrow on the actual WA? I was under the impression that it would all be delayed in order to get an extension and properly scrutinise.

ListeningQuietly · 18/10/2019 20:13

Scooby Grenzen
I have seven red toothbrushes ready to roll tomorrow
my better half thinks I'm barking but found the one from March in a drawer to make the set
and I'm meeting up with another poster who will be arriving alone

I know that tomorrows march will be MUCH smaller than the spring
I know that it may all be in vain
but for the sake of those too young to vote in 2016
I will be there and shouting myself hoarse

because MPs are meant to represent the best interests of their electorate
even when electors do stupid things
and the Brexit vote was a stupid thing
which will most harm many of those who voted for it Sad

JustAnotherPoster00 · 18/10/2019 20:15

Can I just say to everyone going on the march tomorrow, please please be careful and take care of yourselves, Ive still got a niggly feeling about the march tomorrow and dont think its going to go away until Sunday

ListeningQuietly · 18/10/2019 20:17

Justanother
I have friends who have been in the ER for the last two weeks.
It will be fine.

tobee · 18/10/2019 20:19

Cendrillon just catching up on the day's thread! I've been going on about misdirection for ages for a start.

Hoooo · 18/10/2019 20:23

Well, my loves, I adore you all and thank you...above all, thank you...for your company on this shittiest of journey's we have all been forced on.
You have kept me sane.
Xxxx

PhilSwagielka · 18/10/2019 20:26

@NoWordForFluffy I hate how people like her treat people's lives as one big fucking joke. I mean, I know people who are going to suffer because of potential meds delays/shortages, but hey, it's their own fault for getting ill, amirite?

TheNumberfaker · 18/10/2019 20:30

Why do you think honk it will be smaller? We have many more people coming in coaches from my neck of the woods.

wondering7777 · 18/10/2019 20:34

But if the Letwin amendment passes - and it seems very likely that it will - will there even be a vote tomorrow on the actual WA?

I read this morning that it was unlikely to pass (if by the Letwin amendment you mean the plan to add a PV to the deal)?

Has the verdict changed again?

ListeningQuietly · 18/10/2019 20:34

Numberfaker
In the spring we were marching to stop a hard Brexit and push for an extension.
We got that and its all gone a bit Pete Tong.
So why are we marching tomorrow?
Especially if the vote has happened before noon?
6 million signed the petition - to what effect?

I do not want Brexit
but I am very aware that we are not being listened to
so I shall shout louder cos I'm like that

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2019 20:34

I am expecting Extinction Rebellion trouble tomorrow as all ER protests are banned.

Letwin is a good amendment and I do hope it passes. Its the opportunity to revert back to May's deal over Johnson's via the backdoor IMO.

I think it will pass.

Tomorrow is going to be a strange day.

GeistohneGrenzen · 18/10/2019 20:35

Thanks LQ , and for the rest of that post and all your others. It feels good to be in a group, even in the guise of a load of bristles on another person's lapel Grin

Keep safe.

@wondering7777 the Letwin amendment under discussion just now is to delay approval of the deal until it has had time for proper scrutiny and implementation. The PV amendment is actually Kyle-Wilson (again) and will likely not be voted on at all tomorrow.

TheMShip · 18/10/2019 20:38

Good luck to all marchers tomorrow! Stay safe, stay warm.

wondering7777 · 18/10/2019 20:39

@TheMShip ah, thanks for clarifying. So if the Letwin amendment is passed, does that potentially mean there could be another PV or a general election? Or am I hoping for too much? Sad

QueenOfThorns · 18/10/2019 20:40

ListeningQuietly, any chance of a bristle or two (I know I’m a bit late to the party for a whole toothbrush)? We’re going on holiday tomorrow, so no chance of getting to London.

Is the vote tomorrow going to be in the morning? This could well hinder my packing...

Oakenbeach · 18/10/2019 20:40

But if the Letwin amendment passes - and it seems very likely that it will - will there even be a vote tomorrow on the actual WA? I was under the impression that it would all be delayed in order to get an extension and properly scrutinise.

As far as I understand, tomorrow’s motion will
be a “meaningful vote” agreeing to the WA... If it passes, it enables the accompanying legislation to be passed in the coming days. The Letwin Amendment seeks to remove the possibility that an approval of the WA isn’t followed by the approval of the associated legislation by 31 October, and we crash out.

frumpety · 18/10/2019 20:42

Good luck everyone marching tomorrow , as is usually the case when anything even remotely exciting happens wrt Brexit , I am working, but will have the radio on when possible. Smile
