Big week ahead.

Johnson has until Tuesday Afternoon to get his shit together for the EU.

He thinks it can be down, but still lots to do in that time.

This week we have the Queen's Speech too, which is going to be misused as a party political broadcast.

Remember if the government can't pass the QS, there's a crisis that gets generated as a direct result. Sticking in proposals that any liberal or leftie will struggle with, is deliberately provoking a crisis of that nature. A proposal of that type would have to be anti democratic in nature, like... Ermmm... Voter ID. Hell, well what do you know.

Johnson is still after his election because as it stands he's a passenger stuck in the runaway train of his own creation.

Talk of a deal breakthrough is still overstated too. The DUP and many of the usual ERG suspects have poured water on the idea. And many on the opposition benches are pushing hard on a confirmary ref being needed for a deal - they don't have the numbers yet, but talk is that they are close. We also have loyalist military making threats about an Irish Sea Border solution.

Time for Project Shit Meets Fan.

I am soothing myself with chocolate and good omens TV at the moment. I wonder what Sir Terry Pratchett will make if this?

Regarding Saturday, Parliament (as a whole) will vote for the least worst option presented. Whatever that may be....

TheABC · 16/10/2019 13:11

*would make of this.

Screw the chocolate, I am uncorking the gin..

Hoooo · 16/10/2019 13:12

I've eaten 2 crunchies already today...

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 16/10/2019 13:17

Hoooo I had to give up chocolate due to mainlining crunchies from the stash.

prettybird · 16/10/2019 13:23

I am not going to be tempted, I am not going to be tempted Grin I am not going to comfort eat again , I am not going to comfort eat again Blush truth is that I'm scared of BIWI's Big Stick Wink

I blame Brexit and the need for wine and chocolate for being nearly a stone and a half more than I'd got to last Christmas Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 16/10/2019 13:30

Bruno Waterfield@BrunoBrussels

For French and Belgians, at very least: the level playing field in political declaration is at least as important as a withdrawal agreement

< us too, except the ERG / hedge-funder mob >

ListeningQuietly · 16/10/2019 13:34

Prettybird
It has to be said that BIWI is scary, but BigChoc runs a very tight ship over on 5:2 Grin

US: Fresh warning over post-Brexit US-UK trade deal

Sucks to be DUP

https://www.rte.ie/amp/1083679/?

The Chairman of the US House of Representatives' Ways and Means Committee has issued a fresh warning that there will be no trade deal between the US and the UK if Brexit leads to the return of a hard border.

Richard Neal was speaking at an event at the Irish Embassy in Washington last night on the issue of the future of US-Irish relations.

The committee will oversee any future trade deal between the US and the UK after Brexit
and last night Congressman Neal said he would not be backing away from the emphasis he has placed on the fact that America is a guarantor of the Good Friday Agreement.

"There's no talk of going back to the bad old days.
Without that border, commerce has flourished and cultural exchanges have taken place,"
he said.

Congressman Neal made reference to the fact that the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has also warned that there will be no trade deal with the UK if Brexit undermines the Good Friday Agreement.

"She has said to the entire galaxy of the UK government that they can forget it",
he said.
Congressman Neal added they are happy to do a bilateral trade agreement but the border must be kept open and left alone.

US: Fresh warning over post-Brexit US-UK trade deal

What was if Gandalf said ?

It does not do to leave a dragon out of your calculations if you happen to live near one.

Or sleeping giants, either. The US can take a while to process events abroad, but once it starts ...

PotterHead1985 · 16/10/2019 13:51

Can't link cos I've lost it but according to RTÉ the DUP have said they'll agree to the latest proposals?!?

RedToothBrush · 16/10/2019 13:52

I will be surprised if we get a deal today now.

The Cabinet meeting brought forward and the mood music doesn't suggest it will happen.

More and more likely we are into an emergency EU summit and at least a technical extension IMO. I think No Deal is still an option but I think the way things are going I'm leaning towards thinking that's not going to be October 31st.

Think we will start to hear more around 3.30 - 4pm now.

Peter Walker @peterwalker99
Someone in Warsaw told me today about a new slang term which originated in Russia, loosely translated as the “Brexit party departure” - loudly announcing to everyone you’re about to leave a party, and yet somehow still being there three hours later, happily drinking.

I guess it shows that the UK does have a new purpose in Europe, of providing general amusement.

I’m seeing reports that DUP have agreed to support the customs proposals but not the consent mechanism. (How many more billions do they want?)

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 16/10/2019 13:57

Yes, that Brexit joke has been around for a while on the continent....

So, even if Bojo manages to persuade the DUP to accept a border in the Irish Sea, the EUCO can at best offer a political agreement, but according to the Guardian it will take a couple of months before it can be translated and all the legalities “scrubbed over”

prettybird · 16/10/2019 13:57

Can't link cos I've lost it but according to RTÉ the DUP have said they'll agree to the latest proposals?!?

...and Arlene Foster has replied to Tony Connolly (who was the one who said that 2 EU sources had told him this) saying that EU sources are talking nonsense - as has Downing Street Confused at best they're probably still negotiating just how big a bung and what criminal investigations get stopped are needed WinkSad

Based on the US pronouncements, that will eventually mean a BRINO or UK Border In The Sea (UBITS?).

At least the DUP have had those extra millions to console themselves with, from Westminster. I am looking forward to my NI neighbours enjoying similar freedoms to the rest of us on abortion and same-sex marriage, after next week.

TheABC · 16/10/2019 14:08

@floucyfanny, here's one suitable ditch....

Who says Johnson can't multitask?

I think we will see the return of May's WA. With possibly some waffle about it not being May's WA.

UK vulnerable to malicious meddling in election

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/oct/16/uk-vulnerable-to-malicious-meddling-in-election-warns-study

Britain needs to take concerted action to reduce the risk of malicious actors in the UK and abroad from contaminating the results of a looming general election,
according to a new study that warns of the risks of public “abuse and deception”.
.....
The Electoral Commission to verify the social media accounts of all candidates and registered campaigners to prevent fraudulent accounts taking advantage.

Political parties to monitor all the digital communications they produce and to maintain an archive in publicly accessible databases to ensure transparency.

All social media companies, including Facebook and Twitter, to warn promptly when they suspect foreign interference or other meddling is taking place.
