How likely is it that we will definitely leave the EU on 31st October?

What are your thoughts?

The result of the referendum was leave. However more than 3 years later we haven't left. We have remained. If we were going to leave it would have happened.

John1971 · 30/09/2019 16:45

Won’t be leaving on Oct 31st.

elprup · 30/09/2019 16:53

And if there is no overall majority party?

I think Labour, the SNP and the Lib Dems could form an alliance, if it came down to that or allowing the Tories back in.

OP posts:
Dissimilitude · 30/09/2019 17:13

I don't think that's likely - the LibDems can't stand Corbyn, and are psychologically scarred from the dent their public perception took from coalition.

And what's perhaps not obvious in England is the depth to which Labour and the SNP despise each other north of the border.

Bluntness100 · 30/09/2019 17:32

The eu will grant us an extension. That's a given, it's what they want. They might spout some crap first but they will grant it.

And I'm also not sure how a second referendum would go. My husband voted remain but is now of th opinion we should leave as that is what the result was.

The question for him is not should we, but in what manner, so it depends on the question asked on the ballot paper.

Bluntness100 · 30/09/2019 17:36

And the toris are electioneering. More police officers, more money for schools and the nhs, more money for public transport, increase in min wage,

Whilst labour is in there talking shite about four day weeks, abolishing private schools, making landlords sell their properties cheaply, the Tories are putting forward grass roots populist proposals that are achievable.

As said, I don't think boris gives a shit about the end of Oct, he wants them to take him out, hold a general election, he wins by a huge majority and then he's in control and can do what he wants at the end of jan.

berlinbabylon · 30/09/2019 17:40

No one is going to vote for chaos in a member state (Ireland) while there is still an alternative

Macron was, we are told, quite prepared to do so in March and if he hadn't we would have had until next March rather than a month's time. He may have changed his tune but that may apply to others, the other way. I am not completely convinced that one rogue country might not make mischief.

I know a few people who voted for Remain but still wish us to leave because that was result of vote

My DH's colleague does. He voted remain but says the result of the referendum was leave so leave we must. Well you can take that view but there is no mandate for leaving without a deal, only with one, in my view.

berlinbabylon · 30/09/2019 17:42

No idea but I dont think my nerves can cope with all this uncertainty
I'm sick of having tins of beans under my bed
I'm sick of boris and his swamp creature mates lying
I'm sick of not knowing if I'm going to be able to afford food in a few weeks time

Agree with all of this. A race I want to enter opens for entries at 6pm tonight. Do I enter it? Will I have petrol to get to it? First world problem but it's ludicrous that we are in this situation of not being able to plan anything.

itsgettingweird · 30/09/2019 17:48

I think the EU will happily extend.

They clearly don't want us to leave!

That's what makes me think that ultimately leaving probably is better in the long run - and I'm a remainer!

But this shit show is helping no one and doing nothing.

We need a GE with new candidates for the main parties.

CalamityJune · 30/09/2019 17:52

I'd like to think not but I am getting worried now that we are running out of options and time.

What a mess.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 30/09/2019 17:52

Berlinbabylon. I feel like you. I’m just sick of uncertainty.

Didn’t book a holiday abroad this year because of Brexit.

Dd going on school trip to Spain in November. Do we need a European Health card or not?

Want to see a musical in London. But best date is October 31st. Will we be able to get back?

But I’m more sick of the fear. Sick of feeling anxious and worried all the time😞

whyamidoingthis · 30/09/2019 18:01

@caringcarer - I think the DUP are on the brink of agreeing to be lumped in with RoI for a time limited period whilst deal is thrashed out. In other words agree a time limited line down the Irish sea, something they said they would not agree to. That way there would not need to be any hard borders in NI.

Ireland have categorically ruled out a time-limited backstop because it's not actually a backstop if it's time limited. It's simply delaying the destruction of the GFA. The DUP have categorically ruled out a NI only backstop. There were some rumblings that they might be open to it but when you actually looked at what was said, the answer is No.

Wizzbangpop · 30/09/2019 18:06

I’m pretty certain that there will be an extension. Yes it will prolong the agony but it’s better than a no deal imo.

I just wish politicians would admit it now as opposed to later date.
I can’t remember back in the spring how long it was before March 29th they said There would be an extension

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 30/09/2019 18:18

We won’t be leaving on 31st or ever for that matter.
I’ll be shocked beyond belief if we ever leave, & I voted for Brexit. Grin

CactusAndCacti · 30/09/2019 18:25

All of my husbands family come from North East and they are tribal and always vote Labour but now they say they will not vote for Corbyn/McDonnell combo.

Yes that is very much the sentiment in the NE, there is a lot of anti-labour feeling. I know a lot of Corbyn supporters say it is just media spin, it probably is, but surely you would think to be a credible opposition he would stand down. He's dropping in the polls against Boris for goodness sake.

And I agree with Bluntness blustering about private schools, four day weeks and second homes is incredibly unappealing. I know a lot of the Tory parts are soundbites, but all things equal you really wouldn't vote for the former over the second.

British citizens in Ireland
Under Irish law, all British citizens – including Manx people and Channel Islanders, who are not entitled to take advantage of the European Union's freedom of movement provisions – are exempt from immigration control and immune from deportation.[60] They are entitled to live in Ireland without any restrictions or conditions.[61] They have, with limited exceptions,[62] never been treated as foreigners under Irish law, having never been subject to the Aliens Act 1935 or to any orders made under that Act.[61] British citizens can thus move to Ireland to live, work or retire and unlike other EU citizens, they are not required to demonstrate having sufficient resources or have private health insurance in order to retire. This is due to the fact that British citizens are also entitled to use Irish public services on the same basis as Irish citizens in Ireland.[61]

There is absolutely zero chance of the SNP entering into coalition with the Labour Party.

lljkk · 30/09/2019 18:40

Yes of course the polls are right. Labour are obviously heading for oblivion. Just like they were predicted to lose big and did lose big in 2017.

Oh wait....

How likely is it that we will definitely leave the EU on 31st October?

CendrillonSings · 30/09/2019 18:43

You must be one of those people who thinks Jeremy Corbyn has been Prime Minister for the last couple of years...

caringcarer · 30/09/2019 20:10

@elprup My FiL has not settled between Brexit Part or Boris. Whoever FiL chooses they will all vote for. I know it is weird but that is what they do in his family.

Bluntness100 · 30/09/2019 20:23

To be fair boris is not doing well in the polls. He is losing popularity by the day. With every new fuck up the public are turning on him.

The Tories are still ahead but I don't think they can win an election in reality unless he gets a deal agreed. If he does win it will be another tiny win and the Lib Dem's will over take labour. So that's going to be difficult as jo won't hook up with Boris, no way, no how.

I really think the Tories are in a very precarious position. A very precarious one indeed that is set to get worse if he doesn't get a deal.

bellinisurge · 30/09/2019 20:24

@caringcarer that doesn't sound like democracy to me.

jasjas1973 · 30/09/2019 20:26

Its possible Johnson knows the EU won't extend, hence his certainty?

If there is no real reason, the EU will take view that the brexit boil needs lancing.
Brexit as well as bringing problems to the EU, is longer term, a fantastic business opportunity, as they will leach companies from the 'city and beyond to the mainland.

frumpety · 30/09/2019 20:27

I think a big fat hairy revoke is on the cards, followed by a spot of short lived rioting in the rain/sleet. Followed by mid level muttering and tutting. Then low level sighing and eye rolling . Finishing with a huge hiss if anyone dares to mention the B word again. Traditional change of subject to the weather and we are done Grin
