Westminstenders: Game On?

Johnson has had prorogation approved by the Queen.

There has been widespread outrage and horror both in the UK and in Europe. Johnson has ripped up the principle of Liberal democracy even if constitutionally what he has done is legal. In shredding convention and the 'gentlemans agreement' of understanding we teeter on the edge of democratic collapse.

Talk is tha Dominic Cummings is persuing a game theory principle of deliberately putting us on collision course with the EU. The idea being that they will blink first because the alternative of what will happen is just too awful for them to allow. The idea is to force others to make the moves whilst Johnson appears principled and strong, even without a proper strategy and plan for a deal.

And there is the rub. Despite all the Talk of no deal, at some point a deal MUST be made, regardless of whether its before or after 31st October. There is no sense of what that could be and how it could be done. And then there's the prospect of a US deal which suffers from the same lack of tangibility.

All there is, is how things look for a General Election. Nothing else.

Johnson is pitching for an election with no sense of what's needed for Brexit - including the legislation needed for no deal. Not to forget that Cummings, strategist that he is, apparently isn't here for the long haul, only being contracted until 31st October, when he goes for surgery he postponed to take on this job.

So what's the plan for Johnson Post Cummings? Or is he going to do even more 'winging it'.

Meanwhile there's an awful lot of moderate Tory MPs getting very nervous and already failing to stick to the Cummings script.

Johnson, until there is an election is going to firmly blow hot and cool, trying to play to the hopes and fears of leavers and remainers to keep them hanging on to hope and the notion that x or y will happen, when x and y can't possibly both happen because they are completely opposing strategies. Hope leads us blindly to stumble like fools into his trap and to win his reelection.

Next week looks very bumpy indeed. Chances are this thread won't make it past Saturday...

Very moving post room. The whole class system is abusive and perpetuates the abuse, and Brexit is abuse on a national scale.

ARoomWithoutADoor · 30/08/2019 13:20

Thanks piggy and BCF
I guess it's taken me a long time not to feel pathetic about it so a bit of projection going on there. I posted because i think those who voted Brexit are not stupid - its more complicated than that - my exH did - he has this belief that 'they' won't let his meds run out, even now.
Of course 'they' will, and he will still vote for them. He's not stupid just in awe of those 'in power' with confidence / public school voices.

yes, that's what I was trying to say I think - and the UK is still peculiarly vulnerable to this in a way that Europe isn't, in 2020 anyway

Peregrina · 30/08/2019 13:36

isn't is strange how "Judge refuses to halt parliament suspension plans"
has now morphed into
"Judge rejects temporary ban on Parliament shutdown ahead of full hearing."

Yes, BBC some of us do note that you have changed your tune.

merrymouse · 30/08/2019 13:39

Maybe there are varying definitions of ‘food shortage’?

Does it mean smaller range of bagged salads or does it mean we’ll struggle to buy carrots?

Peregrina · 30/08/2019 13:40

Does anyone think that the new findings about HRT and breast cancer are in any way connected with HRT shortages?

Hazardtired · 30/08/2019 13:43

Peregrina that was my first thought about it this morning yes.

Bit convenient.

merrymouse · 30/08/2019 13:46

I think it’s very striking that BJ has failed to convince his own family that he knows what he is doing. Some of them seem to like the fact that he is PM, but they clearly don’t respect his opinions.

tobee · 30/08/2019 13:47

To the poster upthread who had tried to book a hotel room I don't think that that is particularly unusual re change in prices. With my (limited) experience of booking hotels prices usually follow that pattern. Then, a day or two before you need to use them, rooms that are still unsold are offered at much lower prices.

Peregrina · 30/08/2019 13:50

Bit convenient.

Yes, because in the past when there have been scares about The Pill, or specific sorts, women have stopped taking it and either changed their prescription or used another method of contraception. So quite a few women now will think that they can probably manage without HRT or go for a smaller dose.

Not really. Shout the lie, no one will hear the apology.

Remember the de Menezes case ? Before the poor sods heart stopped pumping the blood out of what was left of his head there was an "eyewitness" plant spouting a load of what was later showing to be utter bollocks on TV. Which is the bit 80% of people remember.

Media outlets should be required to issue corrections and retractions in the same location and size as the original story (will never happen).

Sajid Javid was not told in advance of adviser's sacking by Cummings

And I'm off for the weekend. (might check in briefly but not sure how much I'll be able to)

Have fun.

Tobee, I've been booking hotels like a travel agent for about 8 months due to some personal issues that I have chosen to self-medicate via a bonkers sex life Grin I've also been cleansing myself from 15 years of camping by choosing hotels on holiday. Sometimes I book in advance, sometimes last minute. Hotel prices have jumped, big time, in the past 2 months. I wonder if it's due to staff shortages in fact, which are definitely Brexit related, as well as general price rises due to drops in the pound.

DGRossetti · 30/08/2019 13:58

This Sajid Javid, by any chance ? The one who's gone the moment Boris wins a GE ?

Is it normal procedure for sacked workers such as Sonia Khan to be escorted from the premises by the police??

tobee · 30/08/2019 14:01

Temperory I just had a cursory look at Hotels.com after posting and, in fact, I'm none the wiser. It's a confusing picture on the face of it! Grin

Don't know about the police, but certainly being escorted off immediately isn't out of the ordinary.

Link for checking if you can still claim your benefits abroad

www.gov.uk/uk-benefits-abroad

Bad news for mobility aspect of PIP claimants but good news for care part which enables carers to then claim carers allowance.

Contribution ESA normally paid still. Bad luck for the other ESA category. So if you've paid your national insurance you can leave with your benefit but if you haven't then your stuck.

Didn't check the other benefits like maternity pay and pensions but I think both were listed. Also only tried out Gibraltar, Ireland, Spain. I imagine EU countries would have the same results Ireland and Spain did anyway.

The more you know!

Myriade · 30/08/2019 14:49

@ARoomWithoutADoor, I think your post made a lot of ense and can actually explain why so many people feel relieve to see a BJ type as PM.
Thanks for sharing your story (and maybe you should publish that book too!)

woman19 · 30/08/2019 14:54

Current PM is a type recognisable to 52% of us.

@sturdyAlex
So, Johnson’s argument to parliament today was basically “the more you struggle, the more I’ll hurt you”. Hmm.

Not to be alarmist, but thats the situation now. It may not be in the near future.
