Why do people here have a stash for Brexit?

I can see the point if it's medicines or medical supplies, but I've seen a few threads here where people are stashing tuna, toilet rolls and sweets!?

Are you all fucking mad?

I'm a total remainder but come on, I know it'll be shit but you'll still find asda and tesco will be open

I’m never going to be the type of woman who has ‘a well stocked pantry’ I’m afraid

SalrycLuxx · 30/07/2019 15:15

would imagine there won't be evenly distributed around the country, either.

Nope. Major cities will be fed first as they contain the most people who can’t forage at all and whose rioting will cause most disruption.

tomtom1999xx · 30/07/2019 15:15

Of course there is.

Socksontheradiator · 30/07/2019 15:15

If is any panic buying, we will not be adding to the mayhem because we will not be in the shops.
Effectively we have helped the big companies with their storage problem.
As far from selfish as you can possibly get.
And in that vein, I know I'm not the only one to have put a few bits aside for family and friends who maintain that it'll all be fine.

PancakeAndKeith · 30/07/2019 15:16

Go on then Tom, what are you eating that is British?
Unless you are eating locally reared meat, locally grown potatoes and locally grown vegetables then I doubt you are eating entirely British stuff.
Even stuff that is made in the uk relies on stuff from other countries.

iwantadishwasher · 30/07/2019 15:16

Did you not read Sansa's post Tom?

SalrycLuxx · 30/07/2019 15:16

tomtom please Note comments above re: the uk’s utter lack of self sufficiency in food.

PancakeAndKeith · 30/07/2019 15:17

Of course there is.

Of course there is what?

Parker231 · 30/07/2019 15:17

Why wouldn’t you stockpile?

iwantadishwasher · 30/07/2019 15:17

I don't really understand why people get het up over other people having a stockpile...

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 15:17

Think we have our first pledge ....Grin

Socksontheradiator · 30/07/2019 15:18

Well Songes, that's down to you. I don't see anyone on these threads insisting that everyone must stockpile.
Hopefully, all will be well. We all hope there will be no disruption. But if there is, we will not be the ones tripping you up in a panic buying frenzy Flowers

MotherWol · 30/07/2019 15:19

I live in London, and I remember what the riots in 2011. Even if the disruption is short term, and there's only a few days where supplies on the shelves are limited, I'd really like to be able to avoid the shops if I can. Frankly, the last thing I want is to run out of loo roll at the same time as people are panic-buying.

tomtom1999xx · 30/07/2019 15:19

My reply was to this.

I don't think there are enough British products to fully support us

What foods do we import from the EU that are absolutely necessary for our survival ?

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 15:20

Is that a "there'll be adequate food" @tomtom1999xx 😂😂😂

AutumnCrow · 30/07/2019 15:22

I was putting a few bits aside for a couple of OH's family members but tbh they've all been so bloody rude lately I'm not bothered any more. Plus, they never vote.

tom your insularity won't make Brit food suddenly appear, every time you are near. It won't be close to you.

iwantadishwasher · 30/07/2019 15:22

Tom half the food we eat is imported. If that half ceases to come into the country don't you think that might cause a wee bit of difficulty?

tomtom1999xx · 30/07/2019 15:23

I’d just like to know what foods we import from the EU are vital for my survival?

Perhaps you can list them bellinisurge

Socksontheradiator · 30/07/2019 15:24

@tomtom1999xx, absolutely none. What concerns one or two of us is that changes to our supply system isn't going to be immediate and seamless.
If you just want to argue, that's fine.
But if you are seriously not seeing that no deal will not cause some disruption, I'd suggest you do a bit of research.
Even Johnson and Gove aren't promising that it will be straightforward.

SansaSnark · 30/07/2019 15:24

@tomtom1999xx Do you know any British farmers? What are they saying about Brexit? The ones I know are scared of losing their livelihoods, so who's going to make your British food then?

FWIW, I think the rural poor are going to be the ones who suffer from food shortages the most. I reckon cities will get first priority for food supplies- partly because it's efficient and partly because it'll help avoid crime/civil unrest.

People in the country with money and time will be ok, as they will be able to drive around to different shops and stock up (either in advance or when food is available). People who live in rural poverty and rely on their local shop or town's one supermarket to have everything they need, and don't have the money to stock up when food is available- I think they may struggle with food shortages the most.

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 15:25

What's vital for your survival "@tomtom1999xx ? What were your last three days worth of meals?
Do you have enough money to shop at locally sourced artisan bollocks type shops? And the time to shop there?

verticality · 30/07/2019 15:25

"Buy British"

Have you actually tried to do this @tomtom1999xx?

I do actually grow a lot of my own food, and I do try to buy produce that is grown locally. I am not purist about it, and will gratefully and happily buy food (as long as it hasn't been air freighted) from Europe to supplement my diet. That is because it is extremely hard work to live off British produce alone - and not all that much fun, to be honest. I don't know you, so I can't speak about your levels of agricultural/horticultural knowledge, but from my personal experience, the people who have suddenly become advocates of this strategy are those who have no idea that between November and April/May, the British climate produces little other than heavy root vegetables of a type that are deeply unfashionable.

The weirdest thing is that the self-same people who spout this amongst my acquaintance are those I wouldn't trust to show a shred of courage, resilience, or strength in an actual crisis. I know someone who actually approaches hysteria on being confronted with unfamiliar foods who has started to say this recently. It's mindboggling, because she is always the very first to whinge about food, and quickly reaches a point of anxiety that is anything but strong and resilient.

Parker231 · 30/07/2019 15:25

There are no individual EU foods vital for our survival but as there isn’t enough food produced in the UK to feed everyone, the EU food supplies are vital.

tomtom1999xx · 30/07/2019 15:27

So we don’t import food from elsewhere in the world? Just the EU? Hmm
