Why do people here have a stash for Brexit?

I can see the point if it's medicines or medical supplies, but I've seen a few threads here where people are stashing tuna, toilet rolls and sweets!?

Are you all fucking mad?

I'm a total remainder but come on, I know it'll be shit but you'll still find asda and tesco will be open

I like swede. However. There’s a limited amount I’m prepared to eat at any one time. Mind you, the heating bill would go down Confused

However to echo a pp - I don’t want to survive on ‘adequate’ food. I want to carry on being able to eat nice food, thanks all the same. If the Brexiteers have a yearning for cruel and nettle soup, they can knock themselves out of course...

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 16:03

Neil cracks me up. Arse covering or what?!

Socksontheradiator · 30/07/2019 16:09

@verticality thanks, I appreciate that. I didn't really think you were aiming at me but I'm not always as articulate as I'd like to be and can sometimes not be clear Smile

Jars123 · 30/07/2019 16:11

What is "fucking mad" is to bury your head in the sand and believe all will be fine. It might be but it might not be and better prepared than not. If nothing else prepping will cushion against price increases as a result of our free falling pound - anyone checked the exchange rate today??

figrat · 30/07/2019 16:15

Well, that's 41%

AutumnCrow · 30/07/2019 16:16

85c € to the £ at airports earlier today

I do one of the things I’m proud of, being a prepper, is how civilised, rational and good humoured the responses are from in the face of all the Brexit bingo comments.
I’m in Sussex, so I can grow lemons...however my olives might take a decade or two.

I keep a remarkably low store cupboard usually because I just eat it if it's in the house. My 'stockpile' is probably my neighbour's 'usual life' tbh.

Incredible how many apparently conservative thinkers are ridiculing people for taking responsibility, thinking ahead etc etc. isn't that what we liberal snowflakes are supposed to do?

SansaSnark · 30/07/2019 16:24

Neil Parish is deluded to think any of that will continue if we no-deal.

Interestingly nothing about securing/replacing the EU labour that so many farms rely on!

FWIW, I think some farmers and farming organisations did see the writing on the wall even before the referendum- and of the farmers who voted leave, I think very few actually envisaged no-deal as being a likely outcome.

I keep coming up with more reasons why a no-deal brexit with the resultant impact on imports will affect farmers:

-A lot of animal feed is imported or uses imported ingredients.
-A lot of fertilizer is imported or uses imported ingredients.
-A lot of herb/pesticides are imported or use imported ingredients.
Without these things, modern farming won't be so productive and yields will drop.

Many farmers export some of their produce to the EU. A lot of farmers export things we don't eat as much (e.g. offal, mutton) to the EU and elsewhere. If exports are hurt, this will impact the financial viability of some of these farms, again impacting food security.

And yeah, the sort of food you can get from British farms in the winter isn't the sort of food most people these days expect/want to eat- or even know how to cook (bar potatoes).

I've got a bit of extra stuff in, to act as a buffer, in case there are problems or shortages.

There may be some problems with supplies (indeed, all the evidence is that there will be, particularly if it's a no deal exit) but there may not be. I've just bought some supplies early (note: early, not extra) so that if there are problems I won't have to panic.

If there aren't any problems then I'll be grateful I've stocked up a bit. If there aren't any problems I'll just munch my way through the food anyway - I've got nothing to lose.

Having a pantry of food turned out to be really quite useful when I injured my ankle and couldn't get out to the shops very easily. I know other people have found their stash quite useful when they had an unexpected big bill, or redundancy, or universal credit mishaps etc. etc.

I stocked up for the March deadline, have subsequently munched my way through some of my stocks, and will replace those stocks prior to October.

Forward purchasing. Who cares if I have 6 months worth of toilet roll in my loft. It's not doing anyone else any harm? Confused Bonus points for avoiding the knuckledraggers when the shelves get empty like when it snows or when the supermarket chillers break down like in last weeks heat.

Wombleish · 30/07/2019 17:10

Well, if** there is any panic-buying it will be peri-/post-brexit and it won't be the preppers doing it, it will be the knuckleheads who thought it would be all ok. I'd rather have a well-thought-out stash of stuff that will make up proper meals, thanks.

Wombleish · 30/07/2019 17:13

Ooh, and I just can't wait for a taste of American chlorine-marinated chicken. Yummy!

“Just Buy British”

Another one of those super-simplistic feel-good empty slogans.

The UK has not been self-sufficient in food for centuries.

And even if you, personally, genuinely hand-on-heart only allow True British-grown crops to enter the unsullied True British temple of your body, shortages in nasty Forrin supplies could potentially affect you.

Consider:

Say, hypothetically, each human dwelling on these hallowed isles requires 5 vegetables per day. Now imagine a very simplified diet such that on average these 5 vegetables consist of 3 True British carrots and 2 Forrin tomatoes; therefore the 60 million UK population needs 180 million carrots and 120 million tomatoes, i.e. 300 million vegetables per day. In our scenario, we are self-sufficient in True British carrots.

Now imagine that we’ve snarled up the 120 million Forrin tomatoes in a many-day customs tailback, where they can gently moulder into rotten mush instead of gracing the supermarket shelves. Shoppers therefore seek out other vegetables/fruit to fulfil their 5-a-day requirement. So, arithmetic fans, are our 180 million True British carrots still self-sufficient to feed the 300-million-vegetable requirement of the population?

verticality · 30/07/2019 17:27

I believe the 5-a-day rule is actually 5 different kinds of fruit and veg a day. Which is difficult to sustain on swede, swede, swede, swede and swede. It's like that Monty Pyton sketch... Grin

(OK, I exaggerate about there only being swede. There's kale too.).

I might start to stash some fruit based drinks for the ladies.

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 17:32

Apart from pointing out that my 86 year old mum voted Remain because she didn't fall for that shit either despite being an actual old person, I would say I have finally found someone swearier than me. I fucking well salute you Karen.

BBC news actually reporting on likely Brexit farming economy crisis as its lead story

Cosentyx · 30/07/2019 18:10

FFS, how narrow minded can you be? Prices will go up, that's why people are prepping.
