Why do people here have a stash for Brexit?

I can see the point if it's medicines or medical supplies, but I've seen a few threads here where people are stashing tuna, toilet rolls and sweets!?

Are you all fucking mad?

I'm a total remainder but come on, I know it'll be shit but you'll still find asda and tesco will be open

I'm a general prepper not a Brexit prepper. It might be heavy snow in winter. I might get poorly (I have MS) , I might lose my job, Brexit might cause supply and distribution problems and put prices up. All the same to me.

Can't wait until all tbe beLeavers are told by the mothership that getting a buffer of food in is the patriotic thing to do.

@Janista is in Australia so I've no idea what she knows about it.

PhantomErik · 30/07/2019 13:49

Because when there's a bit of snow the shops have empty shelves & being in Cornwall we're end of the road so to speak so deliveries take longer to get to us.

I've always got well stocked cupboards but will be adding some bulk buys like pet food (sensitive tummies), tea, coffee etc so if it's horrible for a while with shortages I won't have to go near the supermarkets.

Makes me feel more relaxed.

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 13:55

I think we need a pledge by all those ridiculing the idea on here Never to do it. Under any circumstances.
They usually go quiet at that point.

bumblingbovine49 · 30/07/2019 13:55

Well I personally consider olive oil and parmesan cheese staples because my family comes from the part of Italy where these foods are used daily and growing up they were as essential to us as butter and cheddar seems to be in the UK

I use both of them almost daily and I imagine the cost of them will go up even more (they are already reasonably expensive items) or perhaps be in short supply for a while so I am freeziing more grated
parmesan than I normally do to have a stock and buying good quality olive oil to have in . I also bought quite bit of these when I last went to Italy and thought we were exiting in March but have used them all since!!. I am visiting again in Sept so will come back with as much olive oil, parmesan and other Italian goodies as I can fit in my suitcase

I have a good stock of other foods/tins etc in my pantry and have always done this so apart from a few medicine cabinet supplies I am not really stockpiling anything 'extra'

clottedcreamoverjam · 30/07/2019 13:56

Well, I hadn't bothered until now but I am off to Aldi to stock up in nappies because no way they will manage to keep prices and products as they were.
And hot cloth face cleaner Grin

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 13:57

I summon @TheElementsSong and their Brexit bingo. Rich pickings on here Grin

clottedcreamoverjam · 30/07/2019 13:58

@bumblingbovine49 good call on the oil! I remember 20 years ago I used to bring it on the plane from home!
Ok, nappies, olive oil and hot cloth thing Grin

The same thing happened before and during World War Two.

People are essentially selfish.

Crispmonster123 · 30/07/2019 14:02

They’re neurotic

PancakeAndKeith · 30/07/2019 14:07

People are essentially selfish.

I don’t understand how it’s selfish. It’s not like there are shortages right now. Someone buying 6 tins of beans rather than 4 isn’t really going to affect anyone else.

Mintjulia · 30/07/2019 14:07

I have a stash of imports with a long shelf life that I regard as essential. Hopefully enough to get us over the six weeks I reckon it will take for new supply lines to settle down.

Cloudtree · 30/07/2019 14:11

I think a lot of them are very anxious and dare I say it perhaps not of the greatest intelligence.

Oh the irony..

New one for Brexit Bingo! Thick as fucking mince and mad, that's me. Ooooh yes.

Timeandtimeagain42 · 30/07/2019 14:20

Because I can.
It's the one thing I can do that makes me feel a little bit more in control.
If Brexit causes delays and shortages which many leavers agree it could btw then I can avoid the supermarket panic for a month or two. And if everything's hunky dory then my shopping bills will be cheaper for a couple of months..... win/win.

Ps. I bet BJ's leaflet advises everybody to stockpile Wink

AutumnCrow · 30/07/2019 14:28

Johnson is already talking about 'the' £39 billion going towards mitigating 'disruption'. (His word.)

He's preparing government for it.

He'll definitely advise 'civil preparations' at some point. It may just be bluster, but I don't want to be in crowded shops when that happens if I can avoid it.

Socksontheradiator · 30/07/2019 14:29

I'm interested to know what is neurotic about ensuring you have a stocked up larder, ahead of any possible lean times.
As a pp said, if you are actually interested, take a look at the 'just in time' supermarket supply chain. Obviously don't bother if you are just taking a pop at people.
There is a lot of uncertainty around whether there will be No Deal or not, and if there is, what it will look like. So it really isn't bonkers to just get covered for any potential problems.

You only have to look at the number of people using foodbanks because they have unexpectedly lost a job/gone sick with minimal pay/taken unpaid parental leave because a kid is ill.
So it's hardly revolutionary for people to aim to have a few weeks worth of bog roll and groceries for any such situation, Brexit or not.

Perhaps that helps.

PancakeAndKeith · 30/07/2019 14:30

Ps. I bet BJ's leaflet advises everybody to stockpile

If it does can we all meet back here? I wonder if the ‘you remainers are nutters’ tune will change.

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 14:32

Can't wait @PancakeAndKeith Grin

JenniR29 · 30/07/2019 14:37

The government is already stockpiling food and medication. Even they don’t have faith that it will be ‘business as usual’.

Perhaps we need a system, you carry a ‘leave’ or ‘remain’ card depending on how you voted. If leaving causes economic problems and shortages then remainers get to be first in the queue in order to survive. If we are rich beyond our wildest dreams as a result of Brexit then the leavers get more in return.

Cloudtree · 30/07/2019 14:37

Only in a place of such complacency, entitlement and mindless consumption could that be neurotic behaviour rather than sensible.

AutumnCrow · 30/07/2019 14:37

The point about food bank use that @Socksontheradiator makes is a very good one.

On which note, happy to say that my local food bank benefited from various donations in April when I gave them a lot of 'trial run' stuff; and I'll be happy to donate in November no matter what happens. I somehow doubt many of the Brexit Bingo types will donate In November if the shit hits the fan.

bellinisurge · 30/07/2019 14:40

Still no pledges Not to get a buffer of food in, I see.
Who will be the first to make that pledge?Grin

Frazzled2207 · 30/07/2019 14:41

I suspect no issue with anything made in uk or outside Europe but anything coming from eu will suddenly have lots of bureaucracy attached. And be more expensive. And possibly not make it in at all.

Frazzled2207 · 30/07/2019 14:42

Ps I have a very intelligent and senior civil servant friend, daily meetings with ministers etc. She is stockpiling and advising everyone else to do the same.

Helmetbymidnight · 30/07/2019 14:44

we haven't been self/sufficient food wise since the 1880s - and people were close to starvation in WW1 and WW2...

i dont think theres much we can do, but its not the preppers who are pissing me off right now- its the no deal morons who can just fuck right off.
