Why do people here have a stash for Brexit?

I can see the point if it's medicines or medical supplies, but I've seen a few threads here where people are stashing tuna, toilet rolls and sweets!?

Are you all fucking mad?

I'm a total remainder but come on, I know it'll be shit but you'll still find asda and tesco will be open

I'm sure that he knows more about what's going on than any of us on here

I'm not.

@Mamamia456 no it's not clearer. You said "I am replying to those who think that food shortages will become a normal thing for years to come because of Brexit". Which no one has.
And then you seemed to think this was a Remain/Leave thing. I don't give a shit how you voted in the referendum as far as this issue is concerned. As long as you aren't whining and creating more aggro when shops are (temporarily or longer term) not stocked with things you currently expect. Like people tend to do when supermarkets run out of stuff.

Thankyou Sockson
We are all very relieved, lets hope its not needed, her mum and dad are quite well off but what about the many others who cannot come up with this sort of money and or don't have their contacts?

Brexit is a very cruel, ill thought out policy and anyone supporting it should hang their heads in shame, things like food and medicines should never be subject to some last minute emergency (so-called) planning, let alone the risk to the GFA.

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/08/2019 14:24

Even if you are well off, paying for medical care can easily change that.

Mamamia456 · 16/08/2019 14:55

Socksontheradiator - Even before the referendum there were problems at times with supply of medication, that's how it is in that industry. Over the years I have had to have different brands of medication because one has been unavailable for various reasons.

Bellingsurge - Read back through the threads, Havana has said that food shortages would be for years to come. I also don't give a shit whether you or anyone else voted leave or remain, and I dont give a shit if people are stockpiling.

bellinisurge · 16/08/2019 14:57

@Mamamia456 if food is there and yet too expensive, it might as well not be there at all. Unlike most on here, I have actually lived in a fucked economy with food rationing. There was food that nobody could afford unless they were an expat like me.

Mistigri - But the paperwork and any form filling won't be done at the port by the lorry driver, that will have all been sorted out beforehand before the lorry driver sets off. He will show his paperwork at customs like he always has and be waved through like now. As long as the companies know the relevant forms that they need to fill in there shouldn't be a problem. Companies are preparing now.

Do you work in shipping?

An optimistic assumption is that the checks reduce capacity by 40%.

Socksontheradiator · 16/08/2019 19:16

'As long as they know' and 'it shouldn't be a problem'.
That's alright then....

There are huge differences and difficulties for the haulage industry post Brexit

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 18/08/2019 15:25

Even before the referendum there were problems at times with supply of medication, that's how it is in that industry.

Isolated shortages usually limited to 1 or 2 specific manufacturers of a drug. Anything that makes that worse is not a good thing or something that can just be coped with because ‘there are always shortages’

Over the years I have had to have different brands of medication because one has been unavailable for various reasons.

If you think about this sentence you’ve just written you might start to see the issue. Where are you going to get an alternative brand from when all the manufacturers/wholesalers are running short?

DirtyToiletBrush · 18/08/2019 15:39

Having a Brexit stash (if that’s what you want to call it) is just having a well stocked house. I grew up in an area where we sometimes got snowed in and had power cuts in the winter. Every October my parents would check that we had a weeks worth of supplies - food, wood, gas for the camping stove, candles and battery powered lights and torches, bottled water, fully stocked first aid kit. I live in a British city now but I am doing some forward planning. My childhood means that we have a well stocked house and could survive a week or so at any given moment. I’m planning for about 4 weeks due to Brexit. I think that if people can’t get hold of food then there will be riots and I don’t want to have to go to Tesco when everything is kicking off with 2 year old DD in tow. If everything is fine and there are no shortages or riots then it just means that our food shops over winter will cost less as we run down our stash of tins - I’ve bought staples that we’ll use anyway.

Given last week’s power cut, it’s no bad thing to have a blackout kit. We have solar powered lamps, candles, battery pack and torches with spare batteries.

This just popped up as breaking news on my phone. It will pretty much answer the question in the OP.
