With may gone how much longer is Corbyn going to last ? Who keeps him in place fellow MPs or membership apologies for my ignorance.

They sort of propped each other up with their uselessness,

1tisILeClerc · 27/05/2019 20:21

{And if the EU are feeling particularly kind - they may decide to forgive us. I wouldn't blame them if they held a grudge for a long time to come, though.}

I hope I am correct in thinking that all other countries hold their politicians in similar disdain/reverence as applicable and take their views of the citizens at large based on other factors. I expect the places that see a lot of hen/stag parties are less than impressed for example. Don't the French take amusement from Brits who go and get badly sunburned, giving them the nickname of Biftek (spelling?).

Glad to see Iambuffy 'on form' and not surprisingly with those sort of comments about her 'work'.

TheABC · 27/05/2019 20:21

Well, the good news on that score is that Boris Johnson is being prosecuted right now for lying to the public. I don't know if it will get anywhere, but if it does it will make every politician think twice about sweeping statements.

HazardGhost · 27/05/2019 20:23

I may have over simplified this....if there was another ref would it be non binding or binding? I thought the last one being non binding was the reason lying was allowed?

..

1tisILeClerc · 27/05/2019 20:23

Maybe the UK can lead the world by having it's PM resident in a prison.

NoWordForFluffy · 27/05/2019 20:25

Sorry, when I get angry I get a bit sweary and tend not to make much sense

It wasn't the swearing, I don't give a shit about that. It was the mental image (fellatio on oneself sprang to mind 😱) which disturbed me!

Basilpots · 27/05/2019 20:28

hazard that always puzzled me too surely a lie is a lie legally binding or not ?

But then I don’t live in a parallel political universe where opinion is fact.

HazardGhost · 27/05/2019 20:28

It's why he's developing a hunched back fluffy

HazardGhost · 27/05/2019 20:34

basil a lie told when binding is wrong because binding means the gov must follow? While lying in a non binding opinion poll is fine because the gov doesn't have to listen to the results? It's weird...I'm a bit tired from staying up late but it's never occured to me how weird it sounds 😂

Icantreachthepretzels · 27/05/2019 20:44

Yes. If the referendum had been binding then it's result would now have been throw out because the lies mean the result is neither democratic nor correct. However - because it was non-binding and the government could choose to ignore the result - they are going ahead with the thing and the lies don't matter and the result is correct and democratic, because it is personal choice of the government, they are not bound by the lies and therefore they can choose to bind themselves with them and that's OK then... or something ...

It's much simpler to remember 'disaster capitalists want to destroy the country for profit. They will bend any rule to suit them to do so.' Because that's what has happened and that's where we are.

NoWordForFluffy · 27/05/2019 20:49

It's why he's developing a hunched back fluffy

Oh yeah! 🙈😂🤭

And it wasn't that it was non-binding that they were 'allowed' to lie, it's just that only a binding referendum result can be overturned because of it.

And it's lying in a public office he's potentially being charged with. Same as my duty is to the Court and I'm not allowed to lie to or mislead the other side or the Court, Boris' duty as an MP is to the country and he's not allowed to lie to or mislead the electorate to achieve his purposes. Lying in and of itself = not illegal. Deliberately lying to the electorate = maybe illegal (we'll find out soon!).

NoWordForFluffy · 27/05/2019 20:56

Has anybody read Esther McVey's tweets today? She's banging on about the result meaning we just need to get on with it with a clean break. Jesus wept.

endlesslyrepeating · 27/05/2019 20:56

I don’t see how Labour think not having a clear position on Brexit is going to bring people together and I’m utterly bewildered that even after this result there’s been no sign of movement. I’m struggling to understand how anyone could’ve voted labour unless you think international politics is meaningless.

Iambuffy · 27/05/2019 20:59

That'll play well with Tory members

SwedishEdith · 27/05/2019 21:04

Because time is running out for them. The Leave vote share of the electorate is declining. So they will get shriller and shriller.

Littlespaces · 27/05/2019 21:16

True. The ERG and right wing Tories are trapped in a bunker of their own making.

mathanxiety · 27/05/2019 21:23

The BBC loves Farage because he always provides a spectacle. He is a character.
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/may/11/farage-rees-mogg-claire-fox-britain-is-seduced-by-politicians-who-are-characters

He doesn't have to win votes. (Neither did Hitler). All that is needed is just keep on being loud and impossible to ignore. For Farage, media exposure more than makes up for lack of votes, in the absence of any sort of solid political leadership to counteract him (as with Hitler).

Puzzledandpissedoff · 27/05/2019 21:28

Who keeps (Corbyn) in place fellow MPs or membership apologies for my ignorance

It's the party membership who voted for him, Basilpots ... he lost a vote of No Confidence among Labour MP's by 172/40

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-36647458

NoWordForFluffy · 27/05/2019 21:45

I'm not sure the membership would be so keen now!

Peregrina · 27/05/2019 22:34

Why on earth were the Tories so stupid as to not campaign for the EU elections, once they knew that they had to go ahead? They left the field open for the Brexit party - Farage's rebadged UKIP. I wonder if it will be the thing which smashes the Tory party.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 27/05/2019 22:37

He doesn't have to win votes. (Neither did Hitler). All that is needed is just keep on being loud and impossible to ignore

Surely Farage is going to have to come up with a few policies now? He can’t just keep waffling about “democracy” and “respecting the vote” and other such nonsense

tobee · 27/05/2019 22:39

Maybe he'll start talking about building a great big beautiful wall? And it'll be the best wall!

HesterThrale · 27/05/2019 22:44

So the BP voters will be expecting Nigel and his MEPs to get us out of the EU now, which of course they can’t do.
And Tories will expect Boris (or whoever) to also get us out, which I’ll wager he won’t be able to do either.

Disappointments no 1 and 2.
Be careful about leading people into thinking you can do what they want - their disenchantment could turn vitriolic.

And by the way, 17.4 million voted for Brexit, 5.2 million voted for BP. So at least 12.2 million Leavers didn’t then vote for Farage last week. Don’t they care that much?

Hazardtired · 27/05/2019 22:47

Had to create new account don't ask I'm blonde

So anyone who PMs me will need to do it to this one because I won't get the old one.

(All that faff and still getting flashing red warning advert)
