Farage’s success and a new Tory PM means we’re now on course for a hard Brexit.

I agree with DongDingDong.

I think the only question left is the future of NI.

mathanxiety · 27/05/2019 18:38

...the next question is how fascist are we going to get?

YY to that.
(Two questions left, obv).

woman19 · 27/05/2019 18:40

Absolutely.

Except that they aren't very good at winning the votey things.

There's quite a few of them coming up. Smile

@BethRigby
The clip in which John McDonnell unequivocally says Labour has to go back to the people in a second referendum. “That is the situation we are in now”

Garage can't take control of shit. He's not an MP, not part of the government and has no more "say" in the negotiations than Roy next door does.

He has his very own bully pulpit in the form of the BBC, and he is dictating the agenda for both Labour and the Tories.

Neither party's Leave contingent would be anything more than voices crying in the wind without Farage.

RedToothBrush · 27/05/2019 18:46

Rory has a supporter for the Leadership!

Victoria Prentis MP @VictoriaPrentis
I am supporting @RoryStewartUK for Leader of the Conservatives. Rory is the person we need to unify the country & the party & deliver #Brexit quickly. He has the track record, energy & the ideas. Decency and pragmatism are at the heart of his approach.

I'm not sure its too much of a surprise to learn she is the MP for North Oxfordshire....

He and Arlene Foster are in charge of Brexit.

MarshaBradyo · 27/05/2019 18:50

Why does the BBC love Farage (if that’s what you’re saying) and want Brexit?

Doesn’t seem to fit

prettybird · 27/05/2019 19:01

BBC 6 o'clock news reinforcing the message that the EU are concerned about the "disruptive" MEPs coming from the UK. Hmm

Yet if you count up the MEPs elected, a majority are pro-EU Confused

Turquoise Party 29 + Conservatives 4 (assuming they are all anti-EU/follow the whip) + DUP 1 = 34

LibDems 16 + Labour 10 (assuming that they are pro-EU) + Green 7 + SNP 3 + Plaid Cymru 1 + Sinn Fein 1 + Alliance 1 = 39

Confused

And at least the pro-EU ones will actually turn up Wink

SuePerbly · 27/05/2019 19:07

Sorry to interrupt.

I have just been reading the "no deal Brexit, bring it on" thread and am amazed at the lack of knowledge around what a no deal involves.

@1tisILeClerc has done a sterling job of trying to present the facts. But even some remainers don't want to hear them.

It is absolutely bonkers. I am totally in despair at the level (or lack) of critical thinking out there.

Thank you to all on these threads. I have learnt so much. Please someone go and educate the hard of thinking on that thread!

placemats · 27/05/2019 19:09

It's a win for REMAIN.

This is unequivocal.

Second referendum now needed.

derxa · 27/05/2019 19:12

Yes, really Derxa. Same process was part of the healing in post apartheid SA and in the NI peace process. Why not? This is why I'm on MN. To get an insight into alternative viewpoints. You're comparing leaving a trade/political bloc to armed struggle.

Yaralie · 27/05/2019 19:13

Congratulations to Alliance Party Leader Naomi Long who has been elected as an MEP for Northern Ireland. An ally of the Liberal Democrats, she is expected to join the ranks of the ALDE in the European Parliament.

1tisILeClerc · 27/05/2019 19:15

SuePerbly
Thanks. The two main contenders are well known 'delusionists'.
I should have given up and done useful things outside really, but hey ho.

Peregrina · 27/05/2019 19:16

But this ISN'T true of the Liberal Democrats - its seems to be a more serious and long term head ache for the Conservatives and Labour. (And I'll bet this is a particularly London based issue)

I have a suspicion that London might include both Oxford and Cambridge.

1tisILeClerc · 27/05/2019 19:16

{ Please someone go and educate the hard of thinking on that thread!}

Don't bother, they are beyond reasonable discussion.

Icantreachthepretzels · 27/05/2019 19:18

Re: the other third who voted for Farage.

They either voted remain or didn't vote in the referendum too.

Not necessarily. Remember 'Leave' and 'no deal' are not actually synonymous. They are leave supporters. They support leaving. But they want to leave with a deal. The other 2/3rds support leaving without a deal. They both support the same thing - and always have done - but 2/3rds have allowed themselves to be radicalised, whilst the other third remains roughly where all leavers were in 2016.

Of course- they are still idiots. They voted for a no deal party when they don't support no deal. But it does show that, not only did Farage fail to get every single leaver to vote for him (putting the lie to the claims of betrayal) but that not even every leaver who votes for him actually supports his new stance (maybe they haven't paid enough attention and don't realise how far the overton window has shifted, maybe they think it can't happen but we need to look tough).

If they were just casting a protest vote and he can't count on their support in a GE - then it means his mandate is even weaker than it looks.

SuePerbly · 27/05/2019 19:20

Don't bother, they are beyond reasonable discussion

I suspect you may be right. It is a woeful reflection on our education system, that they are unable to differentiate opinion from facts.

placemats · 27/05/2019 19:20

Congratulations to Alliance Party Leader Naomi Long who has been elected as an MEP for Northern Ireland. An ally of the Liberal Democrats, she is expected to join the ranks of the ALDE in the European Parliament.

Agree. Interesting to note that she got most of the SDLP's transfer votes and they take the Labour whip when/if ever they go to Parliament.

Iambuffy · 27/05/2019 19:22

I suppose my main concern now is that the brexshitters in govt know that leave no longer has a mandate. It's obvious now.

So they will do everything they can to force it through to ensure maximum disruption and selling off the NHS to their US mates for starters.

Boris will, of course, be their poster boy.

It's all very well saying "HOC voted against no deal"

Is that even legally binding??

Boris can just cite the civil contingency act and I can totally see him doing it.

In his twisted, bloated, egotistical brain it will be his "churchill" moment.

Mimsy, quisling motherfucker 😡

Icantreachthepretzels · 27/05/2019 19:24

You're comparing leaving a trade/political bloc to armed struggle.

I think the apology is for the utterly appalling way our politicians have behaved and the way EU citz have been treated (and wars can be started over such things). We've wasted time, money, compromised security on the island of Ireland and called the EU the EUSSR and various other slurs. We have acted like we are taking part in a war, we have treated them like they are the enemy.
Of course, the people who eventually do the apologising won't actually be the people who did these things, or believed them - but, yes, we do need to say sorry for the behaviour of our government over the past few years.
And if the EU are feeling particularly kind - they may decide to forgive us. I wouldn't blame them if they held a grudge for a long time to come, though.

mathanxiety · 27/05/2019 19:25

TUV stands for Traditional Unionist Voice not True

Yes, but the implication of Traditional is 'true'.

See also Arlene Foster's 'small u unionists' remark. She is shaming wishy washy Unionists.

With Unionism, it's a case of with or against, and orthodoxy/an uncompromising stance are very important.

placemats · 27/05/2019 19:26

So. Northern Ireland middle road politics. Such a game changer!

Scotland, polarised but still a huge vote for Remain and Independence which is the unifying factor.

England. Polarised and in danger politically which on leads to huge instability with the current incumbent Government now officially in shambles.

Wales. Pulled back and heading towards the middle ground but the attachment to England still persists.

Peregrina · 27/05/2019 19:28

I will stick with the Westministenders threads - had it with the Leave/Brexit/Fascists threads. They may not all be the latter but 95% are stupid. Better things to do with my time.

My local LibDem party had a sudden influx of members today.

Sevigny · 27/05/2019 19:29

Brilliant that Alliance did it!

SwedishEdith · 27/05/2019 19:34

@1tisILeClerc has done a sterling job of trying to present the facts. But even some remainers don't want to hear them

I never read them. They're mostly full of astroturfers. Remember the sizes of Leave v Remain marches? Bots don't march.
