Francis Elliot, political editor of the Times, on Sky atm
describing BoJo as 'an enthusiastic collector of banknotes' re his column in the Spectator which he 'clearly intends to keep' (@£125K p/a)

Halfeatentoast · 27/05/2019 10:30

Why did the remain party change UK do do badly?
Libdem more established? Plus change couldnt even agree on a name, so they looked too wishy washy.

woman19 · 27/05/2019 10:31

Change UK changed the political weather. They created a stir for Remain Labour and Tories; and have given confidence to the remain side to keep showing up.

They've played a v useful role and now it's probably time for them to join Lib Dems.

Dontlickthetrolley · 27/05/2019 10:36

Just looked at the East Midlands figures, Green were approx 26k votes from taking the 5th seat from Brexit. Change UK got 40k+ votes. If only there'd been a way the vote didn't get split Confused

PestyMachtubernahme · 27/05/2019 10:39

Turnout: 16,617,044

The 17.3 million argument is well and truly out the window.

It’s no use trying to hide from these very disappointing results. We need to reflect hard and listen to our members, supporters and voters.

The only way to break the Brexit impasse is to go back to the public with a choice between a credible leave option and remain.

Has anyone come up with a more credible leave option than TM?

Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 10:39

At least you admit we're on the Titanic. Surely a different ship would be better?

Of course I admit it @Jason118 - like I say, the future of this country is bleak unless A50 is revoked. And those posters who are desperately twisting the figures to make these elections look like a win for remain aren’t helping anything. Farage’s success and a new Tory PM means we’re now on course for a hard Brexit.

RedToothBrush · 27/05/2019 10:41

I don't think Gibralatar are too keen on leaving the EU. Still.

Gibraltar (South West) result: LDem: 77.4% (+10.2) Brex: 8.0% (+8.0) Grn: 5.0% (+3.8) Lab: 4.4% (-4.8) Con: 2.7% (-14.5) UKIP: 0.9% (-3.1)

They only formed six weeks ago and have won the most seats in nine of the ten areas counted. I’m not sure how they could have done better than that.

Absolutely sick of this. Brexit is Nigel Farage and he's been around 20 years or more. When he quits the scene I doubt whether Ms Rees-Mogg or Ms Widdicombe, or Tice or whoever, will be able to carry the party.

HazardGhost · 27/05/2019 10:42

Anyone else thinking "what next?" and "what can I do now?"

I'm so impatient...

RedToothBrush · 27/05/2019 10:42

How about the Mary Rose?

My take on the FR results, for those interested in the wider consequences of the elections.

Big win for .... Macron.

Yes, I know this is a contrarian take, but consider this:

  • He destroyed the Parti socialiste in 2017 (now split in two, scored about 6% and 3% respectively)
  • Yesterday he put another nail in Les Républicain's coffin (8.5%)
  • He's seen off Mélenchon (polled 20% in 2017, 8% yesterday)

Le Pen lost share yesterday, despite 6 months of Gilet Jaune shenanigans and the blonde fascist making this a referendum on Macron's presidency. She beat him by 0.8%.

In city centre constituencies worst affected by the Gilets Jaunes, Macron scored up to 46% of a highly fractured vote. He got 45% in DD's constituency.

Mistigri · 27/05/2019 10:45

They only formed six weeks ago

Same organ-grinder and, for the most part, the same monkeys.

Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 10:48

Be sick of it all you like Peregrina. The fact is the elections were a big success for Farage, who has won nine of the ten areas counted so far. If the Lib Dems had achieved that then we’d all be hailing it as a huge mandate to remain. But they didn’t.

PestyMachtubernahme · 27/05/2019 10:48

UKIP / Brexit Party just names for the NF cult.

We appear to be full steam ahead to hard brexit, the next question is how fascist are we going to get?

Peregrina · 27/05/2019 10:50

Unless we begin to address the widening inequality in this country then the problems, which Brexit are only a representation of, will continue to worsen.

And what on earth do they expect Farage's party to do for them? I have yet to get an answer out of a Leaver for this. Now as for the Titanic - guess who would make sure he was in the first lifeboat? And he won't be sacrificing his place for Ms Teenage Single Mum and her child.

Peregrina · 27/05/2019 10:52

The LibDems won a much greater number of new seats that Farage did, so yes, I am pleased with that. We know that UKIP/Brexit is only Farage - once he gets bored, or falls out with people then they go phut!

Mistigri · 27/05/2019 10:53

MEPs don't change the national arithmetic or the EU's red lines. Some of Farage's chums get a European salary - and some expenses to fiddle along - with a guarantee of a questiontime slot. Doesn't change anything at all about Brexit.

If anything I'm more optimistic after last night. I am hopeful that Labour has got the message.

Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 10:55

We appear to be full steam ahead to hard brexit

Exactly Pesty. The UK is screwed.

People on here often say that if we were to have a second referendum now, remain would probably edge it because a lot of those who voted leave have since died. It’s an argument I find distasteful but anyway - these elections prove that like it or not, leave still has huge support.

woman19 · 27/05/2019 10:56

The 17.3 million argument is well and truly out the window
Brexists got around 5m last night.
Less than our Revoke petition.

Big win for .... Macron
Vox and golden dawn vote halved too.

The fact is the elections were a big success for Farage
He didn't look too thrilled last night. Hmm
He needed 40%; he knows what's just happened and it's not good for the brexistry.

Sevigny · 27/05/2019 10:56

I’m a regular poster from earlier threads who has both had to name change and taken a politics break.

Stayed up late watching all this and been sucked straight back in. I hope we see more electoral pacts between smaller remain parties in the future. Though I won’t be voting for any whose official representatives insult me on Twitter for not having a gender.

Mistigri · 27/05/2019 10:56

U.K. is screwed, but not because 30% of the population have a hard-on for Farage.

It's screwed because there are not enough competent and honest people in government.

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 27/05/2019 10:56

I honestly don’t see how a second referendum can work, when one of the options is the status quo. If it’s another near 50/50 split, we’ll still be as divided as ever. If the powers that be suddenly move the goalposts and decree that a 60%+ majority is needed, and the results come in at 52% leave again, we’d revert to the status quo. Which would be a victory for remain but only because goalposts had been moved at this late stage. Personally, I’d love that outcome but I can’t see any future leaders being strong enough to sell that.

These elections have shown that we’re still divided roughly 50/50 and I don’t think a referendum would show any different. There’s no way forward without losing ~50% of the country.

1tisILeClerc · 27/05/2019 10:57

Mistigri
Sorry I have been playing 'whack a mole' on other threads, is it finalised that Macron has overtaken Le Pen or are they still on provisional counts?

DGRossetti · 27/05/2019 10:58

Loads of posts today looking forward to Farage "taking control of negotiations and getting things sorted"

But remember: Leavers aren't stupid. Just "differently clever".

Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 10:58

Woman19 - I’m not sure how you can argue that winning the most seats in nine out of ten areas counted isn’t a big success. As I say, if the Lib Dems had achieved that level then everyone would be ecstatic. But they didn’t.
