Need coffee.

Thanks for the local breakdown and adding up basil

Waking up thinking about everyone who voted twattish turquoise who doesn't understand WTO and just wants us to get on with it. I get it on the one hand oh just sort it but I dont get is it can't be that bad .... why would you think it wouldn't be? Because this is the empire and we're the best? How do you play nice with that - it's a position that's illogical.

Anyway! G'morning

I need coffee!

David Allen Green @davidallengreen

1/ The will of the people, updated

2016 - for UK to leave EU in principle

2017 - by means of a hung parliament

2019 - with a majority against a No Deal Brexit and a majority against the Deal.

2/ And thanks to the thoughtfulness of the Brexit party standing and campaigning in this election...

...it can now be said confidently that far fewer people want a No Deal Brexit than voted for Brexit

3/ The figure for the BXP + UKIP total vote should become as widely shared as the "17.4 million".

They should no longer be able to use the larger figure for validating their No Deal stance.

The referendum majority voted for leaving EU in principle, not by any means.

4/ The BXP surge may come at a longer-term cost to the No Deal cause.

Ann Widdecombe currently spouting nonsense about "most of the world trading on WTO rules", so MFN rules aren't an issue Confused on R5 Live Angry

Davros · 27/05/2019 09:14

Does anyone on here know a Tory leaver who voted Tory at this election?
Yes. I definitely know two and that is just from chatting in the last couple of days. I think I probably know more. I think Conservative voters should be counted as Leavers. I agree with Dingdong

Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 09:23

The Brexit party have won the most seats in nine of the 10 areas counted. This is a resounding success for Nigel Farage and the (hard) Brexit cause.

Some posters on here seem to be rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

TheABC · 27/05/2019 09:24

Hmmm. I have just finished reading the thread and reviewing the result. I am mildly surprised that BP did not do better, especially after seeing the polls data. I am inclined to agree with the BBC that it's split down the middle and compromise is rapidly disappearing.

Bloody Labour. They could have avoided this mess if they actually had a clear message (any bloody message!).

Back to stockpiling gin.

Re: that John McDonnell tweet

More Jack Maidment Retweeted John McDonnell MP
Labour sources steering away from idea this is a big development.

When John McDonnell talks about a "public vote" he is also, apparently, talking about a general election as well which remains Labour's preference for breaking the Brexit deadlock.

Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 09:25

I also think low turnout arguments are irrelevant - if people didn’t vote, they clearly don’t care enough either way so it means nothing.

Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 09:27

“I am mildly surprised that BP did not do better”

They only formed six weeks ago and have won the most seats in nine of the ten areas counted. I’m not sure how they could have done better than that.

ElenadeClermont · 27/05/2019 09:27

Are today's headline: 'Corbyn hands victory to Farage again?

jessicawessica · 27/05/2019 09:29

Does public vote mean PV. GE or another Referendum?
Labour still not being clear.

@bbclaurak

Before twitter whips itself into a frenzy before 9.30 on Bank Hol Mon
1. EU elex don't translate directly into Gen Elex
2. Adding up diff vote shares to 'prove' one thing or another prob not v useful
3. Awful Lab-Con results reflect state of parties as well as Brexit policy
4. These results do matter and feed into backdrop of what's going on - but beware politicians telling you they categorically mean X or Y - worth remembering Labour and Tories have both prospered when they are big coalitions

lonelyplanetmum · 27/05/2019 09:31

So we need a new percentages mantra to overwrite the 80% leave rubbish.

Lib Dems 20%
Greens 12%
SNP 4%.
Plaid Cymru 1%

= 37% anti-Brexit

Plus 66% of the Lab vote of 14% = 9%?

TOTAL 46%

Faragists 32%
Tory 9%
Labour 5% ?

TOTAL 46%.

That still looks equal? but not sure where the other 8% are ...

Sorry I just did that!

RedToothBrush · 27/05/2019 09:33

I think you have to be cautious about saying that all hard Brexiteers in the Tory Party will definitely come out for no deal now.

Here's an MPs who have been given something to at least ponder.

This is Hillingdon

RedToothBrush · 27/05/2019 09:36

The jellyfish that is Emily Thornbury was a true sight to behold last night. Especially the Corbynista melt down that happened immediately after. And the full on 'Tom Watson must go' frenzy which you just go cross eyed trying to understand.

Basilpots
The EP can cope with SOME nutcases and the present representatives are probably past masters at eyerolling from the likes of Farage and I presume there must be others.
It is not so important WHO sits as an MEP it is how they conduct themselves and whether they debate and vote for things that improve the lives of as many in the EU as possible (given you can't please everybody all the time).
There is a space in the corner in Brussels for about a dozen Nazi party members. While this may seem abhorrent to many they do deserve their views to be heard. Hopefully any views that achieve adoption by the rest of the EP are 'good' ones.
As I said yesterday, Hitler promoted breastfeeding, good wholesome food and regular outdoor exercise and fitness.
Maybe when we do the school 'drop off' parents should do 30 minutes circuit training or other exercises on the school field?

FiveAcorns · 27/05/2019 09:40

YouGov just sent me a huge survey on Brexit.

RedToothBrush · 27/05/2019 09:40

The Peterborough by-election will be interesting.

It should in theory go Brexit Party.

Reporting that you have just walked into a supermarket is not a reliable predictor of what you will purchase and bring out.

No, just looking at the full picture.

As Prof. John Curice has just said on the BBC, 35% is not a majority. The only thing that is clear is that the country is still divided.

prettybird · 27/05/2019 09:41

I agree Red re Emily Thornberry.

She has progressively gone down in my estimation over the last year. Hypocritical and no spine Hmm - fits with being a jelly fish WinkGrin

RedToothBrush · 27/05/2019 09:43

This is fascinating

I think last nights vote was a vote against FPTP!!!
