1tis if we do have to send the MEPs to Brussels what do you think Anne Widdecombe would do ? For all her faults I’m not sure she would stand for BXP lot not doing there job ? You could cause her of a very many things but I am not sure laziness isn’t one of them. Farage could regret getting her on board if she starts insisting he does his job properly.

TatianaLarina · 27/05/2019 08:27

In reality though the result shows inequality very starkly. You could guess how the vote was going to go by the affluence of an area. It really shows up the problem being austerity. Not the EU. It's thoroughly depressing.

Affluence and age.

My borough is one of the youngest in the country.

HalleLouja · 27/05/2019 08:32

Well I can’t see the Tory Party wanting a GE this year. Whoever becomes leader will want to stay PM for a little while.

Plus Jeremy Corbyn isn’t going to be pressing for one. Though my husband thinks he may be deluded enough to think Labour can do well.

But who knows what will happen as we get to the end of October.

mathanxiety · 27/05/2019 08:33

“I just wonder why it had to be divided at that time and I think perhaps that was a wrong division".
(Eileen Paisley)

Really, Eileen? Hmm

It was the threat of armed insurrection by Unionists in Ulster and a bitter fight to the death in the Conservative and Unionist Party that caused it.

But maybe the writing on the wall is finally visible.

Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 08:37

But remain parties got a larger proportion of the vote

No they didn’t! The Brexit party and UKIP got 34.4% and the Tories (who are a pro-Leave party) got 9.1%, giving Leave a total of 43.5%. If you add Labour to those figures (and yes, Labour are currently a Leave party, as they say they will take us out of the EU if they were to win a general election) then that figure rises to 57.6% for Leave. Pro-remain parties achieved just 40.4%.

prettybird · 27/05/2019 08:39

Labour still have MPs/Corbyn supporters who have their heads firmly stuck up their arses Confused

Nicky Campbell on R5 Live just gave a hard time to had one who refused to say whether he agreed with Len McLuskey that Tom Watson - the deputy leader of the Labour Party - was plotting against Corbyn. Instead, he contributed to try to justify the broken fence post in the Labour Party's collective arses SadConfusedAngry

Mistigri · 27/05/2019 08:41

Doubt very much that remaining Labour voters are brexiters. They just have other priorities.

But of course trolls and partisans will try to spin it. Which is why Labour support collapsed.

borntobequiet · 27/05/2019 08:41

Remain parties got a bigger proportion of the vote than hard Brexit parties.
Both Con and Lab at present officially want a “deal” - one that doesn’t harm the economy - so soft Brexit.
You can spin it how you like depending on your personal preferences.

prettybird · 27/05/2019 08:41

Friend who was running a polling station (in Glasgow) said he'd never seen such a young turn out. Said that he reckoned the median age was under 30. Smile

Good news looking forward, but bad news in the short term as their views will be ignored and their futures shafted Sad

TatianaLarina · 27/05/2019 08:42

Labour voters are pro-Remain - 66% voted Remain, it’s Corbyn and McD who are Leave. And the Tories are split in two - Remain-Leave - many moderate Tory supporters are in line Major, Heseltine and Grieve not the rabid Raab and his mates. Hence the swing to LD.

mathanxiety · 27/05/2019 08:45

GE looms in Ireland. No change in Brexit stance expected.
www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/elections-2019-greens-the-big-winners-while-sinn-f%C3%A9in-slumps-1.3905248

Fianna Fail strong in local elections. Sinn Fein support collapsed in both EU and local elections. There is a see saw effect between FF and SF in Dublin local politics.
Fine Gael (currently in government) saw underperformance in local elections nationwide.

Greens make large gains in the EP elections but the count is not yet finalised - Green candidate Ciaran Cuffe topped the poll in Dublin and will be a MEP.

A divorce liberalisation referendum is carried by a large margin.

Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 08:46

Remain parties got a bigger proportion of the vote than hard Brexit parties. Both Con and Lab at present officially want a “deal” - one that doesn’t harm the economy - so soft Brexit.

Ah so it’s remain vs hard Brexit now, as opposed to remain vs leave? Talk about spinning.

As I say, parties that want to take us out of the EU scored 43.5% (57.6% if you include Labour). Pro-remain parties scored 40.4%.

Mistigri · 27/05/2019 08:46

Best way of looking at this is

  • Brexit party and UKIP plus Tommeh and a few smaller parties represent the hard leave vote (around 35%?) and LD + Green + ChUK hard remain.

The Tory + Labour share represents highly-tribal voters, and those who don't think Brexit is the most important thing. I think it is absolutely wrong to believe that remaining Tory voters are Brexiters; it may be that they are actually the remain rump of the party.

As for Labour, I have Labour friends who voted remain but are massive Corbynistas for other reasons. If Corbyn goes they will mostly go back to the Greens, from whence they came.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 27/05/2019 08:47

Labour are currently a Leave party, as they say they will take us out of the EU if they were to win a general election

dong
This morning I doubt even the Labour leadership knows what it would do if it won a general election.

Motherof3feminists · 27/05/2019 08:49

Maidenhead certainly stuck up their collective finger to TM.

I feel sick at the BP votes in general. Are people really so ignorant after what's happened over the past months or do they just see it as we need to get on with it and cons and labour aren't so I'll vote BP even if I don't actually want to leave because "will of the people"?

Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 08:49

Labour voters are pro-Remain - 66% voted Remain, it’s Corbyn and McD who are Leave.

If you’re pro-remain then why on earth would you vote Labour, given that Corbyn is a Leaver who wants to take us OUT of the EU?

Mistigri · 27/05/2019 08:52

Does anyone on here know a Tory leaver who voted Tory at this election?

I think the Tory's low number of votes reflects the fact that most remaining Tory voters are actually remainers, or very soft leavers.

borntobequiet · 27/05/2019 08:53

I said you can spin as you like.

Mistigri · 27/05/2019 08:54

If you’re pro-remain then why on earth would you vote Labour, given that Corbyn is a Leaver who wants to take us OUT of the EU?

  • a lot of voters are very tribal. They have an emotional connection to a party, especially if they have voted for that party all their life.
  • for some Labour voters Brexit is a side issue, as it is for a Corbyn. I have a number of Labour voting friends who agree with Corbyn on almost everything except Brexit.
PostNotInHaste · 27/05/2019 08:56

i think some people see political identity as part of them as some people do with faith, it’s deeply engrained and a part of them.

Mistigri · 27/05/2019 08:57

Are people really so ignorant

Yes. Yes they are. I was on twitter this morning marvelling at a couple of fuckwits who couldn't understand how Magid (Green Sheffield mayor, now MEP) had won a seat. They are really THAT clueless. They don't understand anything about politics or the reality of international relations, which is why simple slogans have such power.

ContinuityError · 27/05/2019 08:57

It will come when the new Tory PM pursues a no deal Brexit once any doomed attempt to renegotiate a fantasy exit deal flounder...

Whoever wins the leadership election will be PM of a government that has undertaken, as a condition of the 11 April extension, not to reopen the withdrawal agreement.

Westministenders: EARRRTHHHHHQQQUUUAAKKKKEEEE
Dongdingdong · 27/05/2019 09:00

Well, even if the new PM wanted to reopen the withdrawal agreement they couldn’t - the EU have repeatedly said they’re not interested.

ContinuityError · 27/05/2019 09:01

John McDonnell MP @johnmcdonnellmp

Can’t hide from hit we took last night.Bringing people together when there’s such a divide was never going to be easy. Now we face prospect of Brexiteer extremist as Tory leader & threat of no deal, we must unite our party & country by taking issue back to people in a public vote

No shit Sherlock.

Sakura7 · 27/05/2019 09:06

If you’re pro-remain then why on earth would you vote Labour, given that Corbyn is a Leaver who wants to take us OUT of the EU?

If you’re pro-Brexit then why on earth would you vote Tory, given that most of their MPs supported remain in the ref and they've failed to deliver Brexit?

It is ridiculous to claim that Labour voters are Brexit supporters, when we know that the majority of its MPs and party members support remain. Even McDonnell is coming out this morning for a clear policy of backing a second referendum.

Agree with a PP that the people who really care about Brexit voted for the parties that had a clear message on that issue. The core Tory and Labour voters are more than likely party loyalists, who more than likely are split on Brexit (with Tories more likely to support it and Labour voters more likely to oppose it). It's is absolutely untrue that votes for both parties could as support for leave.
