Westminstenders: Why the Irish Border isn't a Remain/EU Plot

I hope the events of this week give the ERG the kick up the backside over this that they need.

I doubt it will, but I live in hope. The alternative is too horrid to contemplate.

I'll leave this here instead as a reminder of what choice Brexit was always going to come down to.

Happy Easter everyone.

The Telegraph led Saturday's paper with the news that Mark Sedwill will lead an investigation into the Huawei leak. Cabinet ministers will have to hand over their phones for examination of email, what's app, text and other means. This is against the comment that the police have not yet been called in.

I'm loving the idea that they are shitting themselves because someone else hasn't owned up to the Huawei leak but their plotting against May will come out anyway.

It's like they are a bunch of teenagers who got caught sharing something on their mobile they shouldn't and the head teacher calls them all in. And they all are guilty of some other misdemeanour anyway.

Because he wants to make sure that Brexit happens.

thethethethethe · 26/04/2019 22:25

He also enjoys the power and attention I think.

Icantreachthepretzels · 26/04/2019 22:32

That article does seem rather out of date. It talks about CUK might have their papers ready in time.
It also tells me to vote Green - when I checked the MEP candidates for the area a couple of days ago the Greens didn't even have a list, for my region ... don't know if that's changed yet.

I don't understand that remain voter website at all. I signed up to it days ago and heard nothing? I don't actually know exactly what I've signed up for or to. Do they ever actually intend to tell us which way to vote in which region? And don't they think that should be the massive headliner of their website as opposed to the useless bumf they do have? Even if they don't know the answer yet a 'watch this space' header would really do they a lot of favours.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/04/2019 22:36

Look at individuals, in case, like with that LibDem MP, you are voting for a Brexit supporter in a supposedly Remain party

BigChocFrenzy · 26/04/2019 22:40

Frumpety iirc, the English Democrats are far right or hard right

Always look at what a candidate is saying in their own campaign literature, as well as the party literature

ElenadeClermont · 26/04/2019 22:40

Thank you Iambuffy.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/04/2019 22:41

That's not really how it works with the EP system though, is it? And, at risk of repeating myself, we have to watch out for the inference in what we're voting for, as the political parties are hammering home.

I refuse to vote for a pro-Brexit party, regardless as to whether the top MEP is pro-remain or not. I will not allow an inference to be taken from my vote.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/04/2019 22:43

I was a bit Hmm when I signed up, but the website did say they'd email to tell remain voters the best way to vote in their region. Maybe they're waiting for serious (post-council voting) polling to kick in. They'd better email before I send my postal vote.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/04/2019 22:46

Mercer is the soldier who stripped off fo that Dove TV ad who only joined the Tory party just before he became a candidate in 2015.

He had no political interests before and his lack of political knowledge shows up sometimes.
Crazy that he should be thought of as a possible leader this early - they are really desperate

He entered politics to fight for veterans and serving military

Unfortunately, he is one of the Tories pushing for soldiers to have historical immunity for past crimes, including murders
e.g. he opposed charging Soldier F for 2 of the Bloody Sunday murders

BigChocFrenzy · 26/04/2019 22:47

A Remaine website that gives poor advice is much worse than not having a site

yolofish · 26/04/2019 22:47

like fluffy I'm disappointed with that remainvoter website - I have no idea who to vote for here in order to maximise the remain chances (it'll be a waste of time, donkey in a blue rosette country - Damian Collins in fact - but for my own conscience I have to do it)

BigChocFrenzy · 26/04/2019 22:56

The danger in not examining candidates is of voting for a Brexiter candidate in a supposedly Remain party

Like that Brexiter LDem MP - I wonder how many of his voters just voted for a Remain party, instead of reading his campaign promise to vote for Brexit

and with the Greens tolerating paedophiles, they obviously don't do vetting

Read what the the party says and what the individual says, so you know exactly what you're voting for

Also, consider a tactical vote, especially in a seat where it would help keep out BREX or UKIP

LonelyTiredandLow · 26/04/2019 22:58

Personally am convinced leak was Fox - he's the only one who has been in secretive dealings with US promising them the key to our cupboards. The only one the US would be seriously pissed off with if he had promised them certain access...the only one who it might benefit and work with their Brexiteer line about 'foreigners!' of course the Americans are different

Loletta · 26/04/2019 23:01

I've signed up too and was a tad annoyed I'd heard nothing until I checked my spam folder the other day and there were emails in there from Remain Voter

NoWordForFluffy · 26/04/2019 23:01

The whole discussion we're having is about tactical votes, isn't it? That's been the theme of our conversation this week, at least. Clearly we're all considering it.

I am going to repeat myself again, as the message doesn't appear to be making its way through: we cannot vote for any party which supports Brexit, regardless of how remain the MEP(s) are, as there will be the inference that we support Brexit if we do. So, the outlier Brexiter in a remain party doesn't hold the same inference as voting for a Brexit party with a remain MEP. That's why we have to be so careful. Because of the '80%, blah blah blah' inference.

If there is a Halloween No Deal, the timing may cause problems
(there never is a good time for No Deal though)

No-deal Brexit stockpiling latest: Warehouse space ‘unavailable’ ahead of Christmas

https://inews.co.uk/news/brexit/no-deal-brexit-stockpiling-space-unavailable-ahead-of-chrisrmas/

Warehouses used to stockpile goods ahead of the UK’s original Brexitt^ date will not be available later this year prior to the new 31 October deadlinee^
as retailers have already booked the space to prepare for Christmas...

UK shoppers could be confronted by empty shelves later this year
as warehouse space that had previously been earmarked for storing stockpiled goods before the 29 March departure date was postponed has already been claimed by retailers, according to the news site Business Insider.

Warehouse space is always “at maximum capacity over Christmas”, the site quoted a source as saying.
The risk that the UK will fall out of the EU in October without securing a trade deal was creating demand for additional space which does not exist, they added.

LonelyTiredandLow · 26/04/2019 23:04

For me voting is foremost pro-remain - LD have been from the start thus no crossed wires or other confusion.

Secondly it is about attitude - TIGs and Greens have at times been frosty about working together, LD are only party who seem to grasp that a coalition is needed.

Thirdly on a local level they are great and having lived in an area that voted for them consistently and benefited, I'd love to see that where I live now.

Fourth(ly!) their green policies are better IMO than the two 'main' parties.

I'm sure I'm naive on their stance on women but I've forgiven the Uni fees (and I have been a student since then so it has directly affected me) because frankly every other party seems to have worse in their closets or on direct show to the public.

ElenadeClermont · 26/04/2019 23:05

BigChoc My MEP candidates are mostly unknown. It is impossible to find out what they think about most things. I only checked out Libdems and Change UK:
1 ex-Labour councillor who resigned from Labour because of anti-Semitism
1 opera singer
4 university people

BigChocFrenzy · 26/04/2019 23:06

We all make our own decisions on voting

I refuse to vote to send a Brexiter to either the EP or the HoC
They can make a difference once elected, in speeches and votes

I'd be massively pissed off at an MEP I'd voted for, giving an anti-EU speech in the EP or in the UK

That LDem MP has voted for Brexit, including in some tight votes

NoWordForFluffy · 26/04/2019 23:09

I've forgiven the Uni fees (and I have been a student since then so it has directly affected me) because frankly every other party seems to have worse in their closets or on direct show to the public.

They were a minority propping up the not-quite-majority government. They were never going to be able to stick to their manifesto: they didn't win. I don't hold this against them.

I'm going to keep an eye on the emails telling me the best remain vote for the NW (I had a Remain Voter email in my junk too!). It's important for me for my remain vote to have as much weight as possible, so I will follow advice on that front.

ElenadeClermont · 26/04/2019 23:11

Hopefully we will find out more about the candidates.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/04/2019 23:12

In case he is the MP if anyone reading, Norman Lamb is the LDem MP who supports Brexit
and who has been trying to change the LDems hard Remain line

CHUK is the only party that we can be sure - without checking - would have 100% pro-Remain candidates

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/norman-lamb-quit-lib-dems-brexit-erg-a8851436.html

NoWordForFluffy · 26/04/2019 23:12

You vote for a party, not an MEP though.

Are you still able to have a UK vote, BCF, or have you been in Germany too long? It's moot on your part if it's the latter, isn't it?

I wish we could have signatures on here, I'd have '80%, blah blah blah' as mine!

tobee · 26/04/2019 23:18

Johnny Mercer was a total arse on Celebrity Hunted. Exactly how you'd imagine a Tory to be.

Apparently, in my euro constituency, I don't need to vote tactically remain wise. But I can't vote Labour, Lib Dem , Green because women. Still not sure about Tiggers. But is not voting at all bad re Brexit???
