Westminstenders: Why the Irish Border isn't a Remain/EU Plot

I hope the events of this week give the ERG the kick up the backside over this that they need.

I doubt it will, but I live in hope. The alternative is too horrid to contemplate.

I'll leave this here instead as a reminder of what choice Brexit was always going to come down to.

Happy Easter everyone.

Thank you Talk and Queen.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/04/2019 20:11

But this is the EP elections, not a GE. What MPs get up to is irrelevant in this context. (Unless they're an ex-MP attempting to move over, ala Widdecombe.)

We need to be voting for remain party MEP candidates to ensure we aren't diluting the remain vote somehow. And that's why, no matter HOW good / remain an individual is, you HAVE to look at their party's message / direction and the implication of your vote (80% blah blah blah Angry ).

tobee · 26/04/2019 20:13

Thanks to everyone who answered my question about the quality of our current crop of MPs earlier I've been eating dinner and shiz.

I was wondering about how the expenses scandal effected people choosing to stand. It having the double effect of meaning you can no longer get the same "benefits" of getting stuff on your expenses and also the public's consequent lack of respect. Added to that barrages of abuse, even death threats, from social media.

But I wondered, maybe, if it's to do with my age, and the fact that MPs are roughly my contemporaries these days, and it was the illusion of me being young/politicians being old that duped me! Grin

Also, it's now not so necessary to have in depth debating skills. It's all sound bites and visual image.

Thatcher had some similarities to May being well educated academically but devoid of emotional intelligence imo.

Tactical voting for remainers

Thats tells me to vote green!

I can understand why CUK put up experienced politicians. They can talk the talk in a way that sometimes even the most well qualified people in other fields can’t- you only have to listen to the Today prog to understand that. Stephen Dorrell is a moderately OK, not too dodgy, former Tory minister with a lot of experience. The second on the W Midlands list is more interesting, Charlotte Gath is a Consultant in Public Health...off to find out more about candidates over the weekend.

DadDadDad · 26/04/2019 20:55

Iambuffy - I'm in the East of England and that article also tells me to vote for Greens. Why the "ffs"? If Brexit happens they won't be an MEP for long and it's almostirrelevant what the quality of the candidate is or their policies, if it at least helps to send a clear message about the support for Remain.

Of course, if it helps lead to Revoke, I think I can live with having a Green MEP for a bit.

frumpety · 26/04/2019 21:13

Vote Green for me too ! Who are the English Democrat party , seems to be family affair in Yorkshire and Humberside , anyone else got them ?

Iambuffy · 26/04/2019 21:16

Their stance on self ID and their defence of a child abuser is a problem for me

ElenadeClermont · 26/04/2019 21:16

It suggests Lib dems for me, so I am off to check their candidates.

Iambuffy · 26/04/2019 21:18

I'm also confused - the greens barely place where I live...

jasjas1973 · 26/04/2019 21:27

That article is way out of date, he doesn't even consider CUK.

also basing a lot on previous EP results, there could be a far bigger turnout this time around, as both leave and remain voters come out in force - if he thinks the SW is done deal for pro EU, then that is a huge mistake.

Iambuffy · 26/04/2019 21:39

I'm not voting green.
End of.

Iambuffy · 26/04/2019 21:41

So bloody pissed off with this now.

I'm getting people asking me how to vote and I'm just saying "pro remain"

But that's cuk, green or lib dems.

None of which I'm thrilled about.

A vote for any ^ of the above in my area is a wasted vote.

ElenadeClermont · 26/04/2019 21:44

@Iambuffy Why wouldn't you vote Green? Sorry, if it is obvious.

DGRossetti · 26/04/2019 21:53

HIGNFY turned a bit intense this week Grin

Iambuffy · 26/04/2019 21:55

Their stance on self id and the whole sorry mess with the challenors

prettybird · 26/04/2019 21:55

Liked the bit where David Tennant said, "Wait 2 years and I can get a Scottish passport" Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 26/04/2019 21:56

I'm not voting green.
End of.

Me neither. Way to fucking woke for me.

Looks like CUK unless Labour come out as remain.

borntobequiet · 26/04/2019 21:56

Google “Green Party non men” for information on why women should think twice about voting Green. Lib Dems not much better.

borntobequiet · 26/04/2019 21:58

HIGNFY - Johnny Mercer deeply unimpressive. Some think he’s the salvation of the Conservative Party, he came over as a less endearing Prince Harry.

wheresmymojo · 26/04/2019 22:06

As much as I hate Self ID and the defence of the Challenors I'll be voting Green.

Because for me I want to also use my vote to send a message about climate change and that's the only way of doing so.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/04/2019 22:09

Does Labour realise the huge swell of support they'd get if they went hard remain? It all seems rather weird right now that they're failing as credible opposition and also failing to see where they need to be sticking their flag.

TalkinPaece · 26/04/2019 22:14

The Tories are well aware that if Kier Starmer became the Labour leader they would be thrashed at any upcoming election

It's a shame that there's apparently no appetite within the Labour Party to facilitate this.

Corbyn surely doesn't want to do this for much longer? Surely! Why can't he take the pragmatic view and retire now, so there's a new Labour leader within the 6 month extension? Whyyyyyyyy?!
