Brexit

Westminstenders: A False Sense of Security

The new exit date, unless we agree a deal sooner, is the 31st October.

It seems ages away, but its runs the risk of a false sense of security too.

The first deadline is May 22nd. The Conservative Party would dearly like to avoid European Elections. They are already liable to face wipe out in the early May local elections, as the party was at its peak in 2015 under Cameron when there were last elections.

The EU elections have the added danger of proportional representation meaning UKIP and The Brexit Party could win seats from them. This is despite polling suggesting that Ukip and the Brexit Party are unlikely to reach the high watermark of 2015 and this could lead to fewer UKIP style MEPs this time round.

The liklihood of a deal by 22nd May is low though. Especially given how well Tory - Labour talks are going. The potential for a deal seems remote in the next few weeks.

The next deadline falls on 30th June. If we do have EU elections, the next target for the Tory Party is the end of June to get a deal before the newly elected MEPs can take their seats. However if the goal is unachievable before EU elections, it seems unlikely that agreement will be found in the next 30 days unless there is a major change of heart amongst the hardcore ERG and the DUP. Labour will want to see the Tories humiliated too much.

May who says she will go, will face another wave of pressure to resign during May and June. Messages out of No10, though not May herself, had indicated an exit around 22nd May on the condition a deal was done. Crafty as ever, what May actually said was she would stay on until we reached the second stage of Brexit and had effectively left. This now falls as late as Oct 31st, thus killing plans for a summer Tory leader election.

Once we get past June though, time for a deal, any deal starts to become very limited. Parliament only sits until mid July. Here May hits another problem. The two year parliamentary session ends. There has been talk of it being extended but the DUP have firmly said no to this.

This means when parliament is due to return in September we have an issue. To start a new session May will need a majority to pass a Queens Speech. If the DUP and Hardline ERGers withdraw support in protest at May still being PM what happens? Can May win support from elsewhere. It seems unlikely.

At this point the question of a General Election looms large. And we only have six weeks from then before we exit the EU. If a GE is triggered then, the risk of no deal is extremely high, which might encourage some to support May from across the aisle to prevent parliament from being shut and losing those crucial six weeks.

The danger over the next few weeks, is there is a false sense of there being lots of time left. The reality is our real deadline might be in effect the end of the parliamentary session in mid July. After that all bets are off.

The date of 31st October isn't the one you should keep your eyes on.

Rather than just going out and chucking bricks through windows which will just end up with me spending a night in the cells

Sad news for my friend whose family and closest friends are in Sri Lanka. She has lost 2 friends and their families and some are still missing. Thankfully her family are safe. Tragic thing to have happened. 5 British people are dead too. My friend is devastated and we are not sure now about Sri Lanka trip what with danger of bombs and dgds illness. We will have to wait and see on both counts. Prayers and thoughts with the people of Sri Lanka.Sad.

They are taking a bone marrow sample this week from dgd as part of investigation into illness as platelets are very slow to come up. She looks and feels a bit better and eating me out of house and home! ( due to steroids I think). Thank you all for support and wishes.Flowers

Oh Plums you've been through it. Very very glad to see your determination to channel the rage, and your strength, which is coming through loud and clear.

HazardGhost · 22/04/2019 10:20

pcplums I've been wracking my brain over what to say since yesterday I'm a bit brain dead atm and I realised I had no words other than thank you for carrying on, I know you have faced a lot and you are loved so much.
Also I fold words, phrases or poems into myself so when things are difficult and I'm tumbling into myself I have something to hold on to. I was thinking what would be good for right now.. some Maya Angelou (she is for every time!)...some Mary?...some late millennial instagram poet? No...Derek Walcott!

Love after Love :

The time will come

when, with elation

you will greet yourself arriving

at your own door, in your own mirror

and each will smile at the other's welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was your self.

Give water. Give bread. Give back your heart

to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored

for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,

peel your own image from the mirror.

Sit. Feast on your life.

Thinking of you❤

PCPlums it's good to hear from you. I take that alone as a positive sign that you are doing better than you were.

These threads were always about support as much as following Brexit itself. If you need to vent or just get something off your chest even if it's completely unbrexity, you know there are people here rooting for you.

Take care of yourself

Thanks Hazard and Red.
Everyone on here has been so kind. I’m still feeling very fragile physically and mentally but I will get through this.
I have been through alcohol withdrawal before but this was 10 times worse, mostly because of the hallucinations which were terrifying. At one point, I could actually see and feel insects crawling over me.
But, like I said, I’m still here and intend to stay here.

PcPlums. I only just realised this thread is still being updated so missed your post yesterday. I’m speechless about what you’ve been through. I’d often thought about you and how you hadn’t posted in a while. You’ve been through the mill (that’s putting it mildly, I know). It’s amazing how positive you sound. So pleased you’re back. Keep on keeping on! X

{Everyone on these threads are brilliant. It’s quite sad in some ways that the best information about Brexit is on a parenting website}

It is of course quite apt though because the real downsides will hit out children the hardest, by reduced infrastructure in the UK and the increased difficulty and expense of being able to widen their horizons in future. I am intrigued and delighted that my DC decided to study in Europe and has mooted plans to stay in education in other EU countries.

Surferjet - for all I totally disagreed with him/her, contributed far more intelligent opinions than Mickey's inane sound bites Wink

I know the nest of vipers thing is a it pisses me off. There have many acts of kindness on here. There is a thread in classics where a woman was going to leave her home because It had become virtually uninhabitable because of neglect and a bunch of Mumsnetters came and cleared up her house.
I was ‘friends’ with a woman on here who was in the most appalling abusive relationship but she just couldn’t see it.
I gave her my phone number and I told her she could call me anytime. I never actually thought that she would but she rang me at 4am after her husband had beaten the shit out of her. She only lives a few miles from so I told her to get a taxi and I would pay if she didn’t have the money.
And she arrived at my house at 5am with her little boy. And they stayed with me for a week and I got her into Women’s Aid and I helped her get into a refuge.
I’m still in touch with her. She’s training as a social worker.
That’s the power of Mumsnet
