Westminstenders: 1001 Ways to wait for EUCO - Sprouts, Nits and Brexit

Not much more to say other than, all we can do is wait to hear our fate.

Which seems to lie in the hands of Macron.

I think these tweet sums a lot of it up from a couple of jaded soft leavers

Iain Martin @ iainmartin1
This terrible farce in Brussels tonight is like being British during the eurovision song contest. British entrant awaits fate, watching humiliating results come in, trying to smile for the audience back home.

George Trefgarne @georgetrefgarne
To be honest I think Buck’s Fizz and Cheryl thingummy would have made a better job of it

My advice: Don't wait up!

Pippa Crerar @pippacrerar
EU source on Macron: "He is in a bit of a schizophrenic situation - (his) domestic audience demands that he is tough on Britain for historic reasons. On the other hand, France is among the most-hit in any no-deal Brexit. It will take hours before we pull him down from his tree."

So Macron may end up being the one who gets the UK what it wants but is doing it to be tough on us. I'm not sure I understand EU politics.

Sickening to hear Farage all over the BBC today. He knows exactly what he’s saying and which dog whistles he’s blowing. Shame on the state broadcaster for sliding back into its old Farage habit.
Because he was bragging about the thousands of prospective B party candidates coming forward to stand in EU elections, I filled in and sent off my TIG form today. At least if everyone they emailed does it, it will at least match and hopefully exceed NF’s lot.
TBH I’m really not as hopeful of TIG as I was at first despite having received a number of emails with pictures of Heidi Allen grinning and giving a thumbs up. Nice as that is it’s not a policy outline. But hey ho. With a bit of luck, they will think I’m too old or gender critical, and either I won’t be chosen or will languish well down the list.

PestyMachtubernahme · 12/04/2019 20:32

It is indeed a dilemma Mockers

Littlespaces · 12/04/2019 20:33

Dear xxx

I was delighted to receive your email and I could not agree more with your demand for a second referendum.

Brexit continues to dominate public life in the UK, even almost three years after the fateful referendum of June 2016. Throughout these years, I have never wavered in the knowledge that Britain is stronger inside the EU than outside it and so I never stopped fighting against Brexit. It has always been clear to me that the UK has much more to lose from leaving the EU than it could ever stand to gain - ranging from the EU’s high environmental standards, to freedom of movement and labour rights.

The revelations surrounding the Cambridge Analytica scandal and of Leave.EU’s overspending during the referendum campaign have further strengthened my conviction that the referendum in 2016 was not only based on lies and deceit, but also hijacked by a murky network of fake think tanks, so-called charities, wealthy individuals and foreign actors. For more information on this, have a look at my Bad of Brexit and Brexit and Brexit Syndicate websites.

Instead of listening to populist and dangerous slogans peddled by those who would like to undermine our democracy and burn hard-won regulations to boost their own profits, we should look at the benefits EU membership has brought. For example, being in the EU means that we benefit from some of the world’s highest environmental protection and food safety standards, that we can trade freely with the world’s largest market and that we can choose to live and work in any of the other member states. And in the South West, the EU is an important source of funding through the Structural, Rural Development and Cohesion Funds. You can find more information on what the EU does for your region here.

Where else in the world do citizens enjoy such a high level of freedom and rights as they do in the EU?

In addition, climate change is the largest threat facing our planet right now and a concerted effort is needed to stop a catastrophe from happening. We desperately need cooperation as embodied by the EU to tackle such massive issues of global scale. Going it alone does not make sense at a time where humanity faces truly global challenges.

That is why I remain staunchly pro-European and have been doing everything I can to ensure we keep the closest possible relationship with our European neighbours. I’ve worked closely with the various For Europe groups across the South West, spoken at public meetings, and joined the rallies. Almost three years on, our country is deeply divided, our government in total chaos and we are losing friends. I do not believe that this is what people voted for and this is why I am campaigning for a Final Say - a referendum with an option to stay in the EU.

Ironically, I could not agree more with David Davis when he said: “If a democracy cannot change its mind, it ceases to be a democracy”. Now that we know much more about what Brexit really means, a People’s Vote would allow us to make a decision on just whether this really is what we want.

It would be a historic mistake to leave the EU, but we can still bring this chaotic and dangerous chapter in our history to an end and finally Stop Brexit. If you would like to learn more about what you can do, please do not hesitate to visit my website. There, you can also read up on my work in the European parliament.

With best wishes,

Molly

Mostly agree with TalkinPaece except I think there is still a place in labour for Corbyn, just not as leader as I don't think he has what it takes. But unfortunately that's where we're at. I'm still voting labour because it's the party of Jess Phillips, Emily Thornberry, Keir Starmer and too many other good MPs to list. It's the only party in my area that has a chance of beating the Tories. I agree with its anti-austerity policies and my local party actually cares about the problems with homelessness that have increased massively since the Tories got into power.

If I thought the lib dems were better placed to beat the Tories I'd probably vote for them instead however the local lib dems have been spreading false rumours about labour having a plan to but the local hospital of most of its services which is ludicrous and without a shred of truth to it.

We got our Labour sign put up outside.the house today. I was nervous about it but it helped that our neighbour right across the street had one put up today too which was a nice surprise!

PestyMachtubernahme · 12/04/2019 20:37

Little Molly is indeed lovely.

Iambuffy · 12/04/2019 20:38

I have never felt less able to exercise my vote in my life
Where I live a vote for anything other than blue or red is a wasted vote

Littlespaces · 12/04/2019 20:43

I'm lucky. I can float and the floating voters usually make the difference.

Pleased to report that my constituency could go from Tory to Lib Dem. Greens are fast gaining ground too.

Littlespaces · 12/04/2019 20:44

And the comments on Tory MP's social media page and in the local newspaper are scathing. I've never seem that before so i think he might be toast.

courgettesarefab · 12/04/2019 20:54

So has the threatened Brexit Blackout strike happened today?

HazardGhost · 12/04/2019 20:55

born that's fab, well done for getting the form in. CakeWine

Iambuffy · 12/04/2019 20:57

Brilliant born

PestyMachtubernahme · 12/04/2019 20:57

courgettes , how would anyone know?

lonelyplanetmum · 12/04/2019 20:58

Yay Born. So pleased to hear you decided to stand up for what we believe in.

BestIsWest · 12/04/2019 21:02

Labour are a leave party
I disagree
My Labour MP is strongly pro Europe.
My constituency voted to leave by a fraction.
It has flipped between Tory and Labour several times
My MP represents it well.

My constituency exactly.

Windowsareforcheaters · 12/04/2019 21:03

It's the only party in my area that has a chance of beating the Tories

In local elections or a GE under FPTP this is a valid argument. The EU elections are a party list under a form of PR.

You vote for the party not the candidate. Votes count, vote for a remain party, the Labour Party is not a remain party.

Windowsareforcheaters · 12/04/2019 21:04

My constituency exactly

EU elections are not constituency based.

BestIsWest · 12/04/2019 21:04

Jess Phillips, Yvette Cooper, David Lammy, Keir Starmer, my own MP, people like these give me hope that Labour dies havea future.

BestIsWest · 12/04/2019 21:05

DOES have a future

Windowsareforcheaters · 12/04/2019 21:08

Does the Labour Party have a future in or out of Europe.

EU elections must be fought on remain or leave. The Labour Party is not a remain party.

prettybird · 12/04/2019 21:14

For those that think that their vote would be wasted, a) in the EU ekections, they use the PR d'Hondt system, so votes for other parties do count and the Greens or LibDems (in England) do have a chance to get (an) MEP(s) and b) in GEs (and in local elections in England? I'm a bit ignorant about local elections Blush), even if it's a "safe" seat (whether red or blue), votes for other parties will make a difference to the coverage that (in particular) the state broadcaster is obliged to give in the name of "balance". It's how Farage got the oxygen of publicity Hmm.

Help the Greens get the same level of coverage through an increased percentage of votes Grin

woman19 · 12/04/2019 21:16

Sorry, I'm going to repost something I've just put up on Led By Donkeys thread.

One of the reasons why it's "Happy Not Brexit Day" again. Smile:

For 3 years pro EU groups have been working on a cross party basis

Same strategy will need to be used by pro EU candidates in the EU elections, to avoid dividing the pro EU vote; if voters tell them to.

Staying in EU is bigger than partisan affiliations.

Sort of the point of the EU really.

PestyMachtubernahme · 12/04/2019 21:17

MY MP is lovely and helped DD moved to semi-supported living (all done via e-mail).

IRL my MP parks across my drive and when challenged responds with "Do you know who I am?"

My MP abstains on indicative votes but supports no deal.

My Mp is glad he did not join ERG.

My MP says YES to whoever is in power this week.

He backs local causes enthusiastically and then votes (in parliament) to oppose them.

My Mp is very average and representative.

Thanks to those who explained the PR system for European elections. I haven't given up on Labour yet though. Peston tends to be proved right: www.itv.com/news/2019-04-11/why-labour-looks-set-to-become-the-referendum-party/
