Westminstenders: 1001 Ways to wait for EUCO - Sprouts, Nits and Brexit

Not much more to say other than, all we can do is wait to hear our fate.

Which seems to lie in the hands of Macron.

I think these tweet sums a lot of it up from a couple of jaded soft leavers

Iain Martin @ iainmartin1
This terrible farce in Brussels tonight is like being British during the eurovision song contest. British entrant awaits fate, watching humiliating results come in, trying to smile for the audience back home.

George Trefgarne @georgetrefgarne
To be honest I think Buck’s Fizz and Cheryl thingummy would have made a better job of it

My advice: Don't wait up!

Pippa Crerar @pippacrerar
EU source on Macron: "He is in a bit of a schizophrenic situation - (his) domestic audience demands that he is tough on Britain for historic reasons. On the other hand, France is among the most-hit in any no-deal Brexit. It will take hours before we pull him down from his tree."

So Macron may end up being the one who gets the UK what it wants but is doing it to be tough on us. I'm not sure I understand EU politics.

I love mad Catholic names too. Consuelo is a good one.

Buried on an old 3.5" floppy is a short story I wrote called "Conseula" - loosely (well it fooled some Grin) based around Maupassants' "Boule de Suif". It was set on a English freighter hightailing it out of Buenos Aires in 1939 ...

(I wonder how many Brexiteers had a little bit of sick in the back of their throats just now ... Grin )

bellinisurge · 12/04/2019 16:53

I'm a Catholic. I went to a Catholic school. No one had a posh/pretentious name like that.

Iambuffy · 12/04/2019 16:54

Honor was popular in my school

DGRossetti · 12/04/2019 16:55

and virtue Grin

horseshit · 12/04/2019 16:56

dreich I know all about nuns, I’ve seen Sound of Music a billion times Grin Grin Grin

Nothing against religious or biblical names, by the way, hardcore catholic names are just not something I’m used to at all!

TalkinPaece · 12/04/2019 16:57

Sorry but Consuela will always make me think of Dawn French

Ballykissangel had some cracking names in it
then again, so does Father Ted

Quintella · 12/04/2019 16:59

Majella is another one that used to be popular in Ireland. All the Conceptas and Assumptas are generally speaking 70+. If I heard of a baby Assumpta I'd assume she was a member of the Travelling community, as they often favour the old school Catholic names for their kids.

prettybird · 12/04/2019 17:00

Actually, yes, most of them, yes.

This despite being a minority administration - which, for the avoidance of doubt, I think is a good thing as it means compromise ( not a dirty word), eg talking to the Greens, plus the Scottish Parliament is not set up for majority administrations as they were supposed to be impossible and it means there is not sufficient oversight when one party has a majority.

But no response on EVEL (which does have an impact on Scotland due to Barnet consequentials as often the impact is indirect). Nor on the fact that WM can vote to pull back any and all Holyrood's powers when ever it wants.

Areas of England had a chance to vote for regional parliaments. They chose not to. Not Scotland's fault.

Quintella · 12/04/2019 17:00

And I can spot a nun at 50 spaces. Even if she's in her civvies.

woodpigeons · 12/04/2019 17:00

Leicester would be a good place for a devolved parliament havingto.
It has a less than 50% white British population and has been said to be the most successful multiracial city in England.

Quintella · 12/04/2019 17:00

paces even

dreichuplands · 12/04/2019 17:02

I'd still recommend watching it horseshit Robbie Coltrane makes a much better nun than Julie Andrew's in my opinion.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 12/04/2019 17:05

Right, sorted. Shall I suggest it to Treeze :)

TheMShip · 12/04/2019 17:07

Yes, Michaelhouse Centre is about 10-15 minute walk from the Sidgwick site. Don't discount larger colleges, the absolute number of students from less privileged backgrounds will be higher than smaller colleges even if the proportion is smaller iyswim.

A Very Happy UnBrexit to You

(Sung to the tune of A Very Happy Unbirthday from the old Disney Alice in Wonderland film)

Hope to be wishing you all the same on the first of each month until October and then again on 31st. Unless of course we get to wish each other Happy Revocation Day first (one can dream)

Years ago I suffered some very persistent and decidedly unwelcome attention from a man whose sister was called Perpetua.

woodpigeons · 12/04/2019 17:09

Please do havingto.
JRM would be totally out of his element there. He wouldn’t get attacked but he’d certainly be mocked.

horseshit · 12/04/2019 17:10

dreich I’ll see if I can find it on prime or Netflix. I do love Robbie Coltrane, his performance when strangling Noel Fielding in that Kate Bush music video was simply riveting (half kidding).
Also I looked it up on Wikipedia and it sounds hilarious, so thanks for the tip :)

TalkinPaece · 12/04/2019 17:17

Best ever Robbie Coltrane is with the Chainsaw in Supergrass
(love the Comic Strip)
in fact Alan B'stard was a wonderful character ... perfect for our times

Camomila · 12/04/2019 17:55

bellinsurge I went to Catholic school with an Aubrey and a Maximillian which I suppose are posh but not that Catholic, Therese’ and Gabriel had fairly Catholic names but not as OTT posh.
Now as for my relatives I have a Clotilde, an Adua, a Maria Grazia a Placido and a Pio :)
DSs name is medium posh, and medium Catholic Grin

Iambuffy · 12/04/2019 17:57

I have family members named regina and paschal.

DGRossetti · 12/04/2019 18:03

woodpigeons and Jux thanks for adviceWine

Peregrina · 12/04/2019 18:09

we also discussed the May 2nd elections - senior Tories are expecting an absolute bloodbath. The shires may change colour.

Please God, let it be so. Also touching wood and crossing my fingers to cover all bases!

boatyardblues · 12/04/2019 18:09

Just to play devils advocate, the real problem isn't distrust of politicians. It's trustingthe fuckers. Because that's how "I always vote " comes about meaning people get elected with no incentive to serve their "core demographic"

This one of the reasons I like living in a marginal seat that regularly changes hands. Our current and last few MPs have all worked really hard for constituents and actually seem(ed) to listen. Our current one regularly rebels against the whip to vote in accord with the constituency's interests.

Iambuffy · 12/04/2019 18:12

Absolutely no idea who to vote for.
I don't mind voting tactically but still have no clue.
I'm desperate for the Tories to get a drubbing
