Westminstenders: Compromise is a difficult word

Today the HoC had a water leak. It closed the house for the day. This isn't without consequence; any hope for the opportunity of Indicative Votes on Monday had cold water poured on it.

Meanwhile talks between talks between May and Corbyn were about as productive as you'd imagine. But apparently they had nice tea and biscuits.

The Cooper Bill, the last minute lock on May getting a extension to prevent no deal, has been in the Lords today. I say it's been in the Lords but Tories have filibuster Ed on procedure for over 6 hours to prevent the chance of it passing the house. Tory whips are timetabled until 6am but the opposition benches have vowed to go to 7.30am. So far the votes to ruin the procedure have failed comfortably so the opposition have the number. Its just a question of time.

The trouble is with the Lords not sitting tomorrow that means the bill won't get passed until Monday and there are fears it won't get royal assent until Tuesday.

The bill doesn't prevent accidental no deal but it would be a barrier to May.

It therefore looks like May's gambit with the EU to get an extension is to say her plan is ongoing talks with Labour for a cross party solution. It won't wash.

No deal looks more and more likely.

Swearing at question time.

I am absofuckinglutely furious. Why will no one tell the truth?

We are days from a crash out. I've said for a while I believe no deal is the endgame and I stand by what I've said. The game playing and bullshit needs to stop.

Sorry for the swears. I'm just so angry. My kids are growing up with this crap, to have more pressure, less choice and less opportunities. And my kids are far more fortunate (now, we were desperately poor a few years ago) than most. And I want to scream.

Because this isn't just us, it isn't just now. It's for generations to come, more austerity, more cuts, more nothing for more people.

And I thought we had it bad when we lost our home in Thatcher's Britain when I was a child.

I want to protect not just my kids, but all our kids. This is no way forward. I'm so sad.

I was hoping and praying and wishing for parliamentary breakdown after all this to start something new and I can't even see that happening. There is no new people, no new way, just a divided population that will continue to be divided.

Cheer me up before I drink all the wine

CordeliaEarhart · 04/04/2019 23:33

lonelyplanetmum, I totally agree it's ideological. My previous school had:

  • cut a science technician so we had to ration practicals,
  • increased class sizes to the point where a colleague had a folding desk in her classroom to fit the extra child in (couldn't put a permanent one in cos it blocked the door and so wouldn't pass fire regs)
  • replaced all experienced teachers with NQTs (who were lovely but too many inexperienced staff makes everything worse)
  • reduced PPA to below the required minimum for some staff (by claiming form time + pshe didn't count as contact time)
  • cut pastoral staff down to the bare minimum so as a form tutor I was putting in an average of two additional hours per week in supporting kids.

And we weren't even the worst hit. I decamped to the private sector. I still feel guilty about it, but I couldn't face going in every day feeling like I was failing the children in front of me. I don't have kids, but I'd happily pay more tax to properly fund schools.

CordeliaEarhart · 04/04/2019 23:38

All that while claiming kids should rote learn times tables to improve their maths skills yet not understanding that "most schools should be above average" is a nonsense statement.

lonelyplanetmum · 04/04/2019 23:41

What do they want to spend it on?

Tax cuts I think. It seems there's a shift to more MPs believing that forcing people and corporations to pay tax is inherently wrong. It's a survival of the fittest mentality.

So there should be greater separation of health, education and the state, because the role of government not to educate the youth of the country but to allow market forces to dictate education available.

Look at the US

"The official poverty rate is 12.3 percent, based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2017 estimates. That year, an estimated 39.7 million Americans lived in poverty according to the official measure. According to supplemental poverty measure, the poverty rate was 13.9 percent.

According to the Census Bureau, 18.5 million people reported deep poverty, which means a household income below 50 percent of their 2017 poverty threshold. These individuals represented an estimated 5.7 percent of all Americans and 46.7 percent of those in poverty."

I just feel we are witnessing an irreversible shift and it makes me paranoid..

Teacher here. Luckily in a good grammar in a shite area with lots of funding, but I see the effect of Gove, the fucking cockwomble, in my children's education and in my friends schools.

@redtoothbrush - definitely a mover, try any van, we got an excellent quote to move, two ukrainian guys showed up, sucked air through their teeth, demanded unfiltered filtered coffee (the Eastern European way, dumped in the bottom of a mug with hit water, quite a shock if you've never had it 😱) and proceeded to fit 90 percent of our shite into a too small van for under 200 quid. I still had to do 5 runs in the car to drop stuff off in my mums garden and collect it over the next few days.. 😬

Storage... My DH works in shipping, he has said there is literally none available. Nothing. Nada. They work all over the world, he's never seen anything like it. So someone is stockpiling...

That's exactly what my friend who is a recently retired head teacher says.

It is not austerity (which implies necessity). It's ideological -not born of necessity from what was the 5 th richest country in the world.

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 04/04/2019 23:44

I will have to hide now.

They will be coming for me.

I may change my brand name. I looked into VPN for my phone but they were all rubbish. No one is untraceable. I'm not sure I'm worthy of chemical or biological warfare but will try and reduce the risk

Quintella · 04/04/2019 23:45

prettybird · 04/04/2019 23:47

Songsofexperience - "they" think that by the rich paying less tax and not having to pay for the undeserving and feckless poor and not needing to pay for health, education and welfare because they should pay for it themselves , the proletariat are then forced to work harder just to survive and make the rich richer HmmAngrySad

notangelina

It was on newsnight last night. Three meds, treating epilepsy, Bipolar Disorder and neuropathic pain.

Will see if I can track down a link...

Link re medicines that haven't been stockpiled

LonelyTiredandLow · 04/04/2019 23:59

It's more one rule for me and another for them, if my friend is anything to go by. She'll happily bore on about poor people who can't afford kids should be sterilised, votes Tory and then got the hump when they wouldn't pay for her 3rd child. She loved that policy when it came in.

If I'm brutally honest my meanest side of ND stance does pay people like her back in karma. I mainly just wish I trusted that those who caused this would be properly dealt with (Farage/Banks/MP's, etc) to deter future re-enactments.

CordeliaEarhart · 05/04/2019 00:05

In my opinion, the teacher recruitment / retention crisis is being caused by the conditions they face. SEN is facing a related crisis. Most teachers want to see inclusive education delivered properly. But the following applies:

  • child is identified as having additional needs
  • school has to find the first £XXXX from the general budget before getting additional funding
  • slt say there is no more money for additional support and the responsibility lies with the classroom teacher
  • helpful senco identifies strategies which may help, but these all take additional lesson time focussed on the individual and additional planning time
  • classroom teacher has no additional planning time due to reduction of PPA and simultaneous introduction of new gcse and a level specifications, so feels awful for not being properly prepared
  • classroom teacher spends 1/3 of the lesson focussed on 1 child and the remaining 2/3 is split between 33 other students and the child with additional needs still isn't being properly supported
  • classroom teacher knows she is failing all the pupils so quits.

Repeat x100 across the country.

Sorry for the derail, but one of the things which makes me so mad about Brexit is that it is distracting politicians from the very real problems facing our country today.

lonelyplanetmum · 05/04/2019 00:15

Humour interlude...cat related.

prettybird · 05/04/2019 00:22

Did anyone else notice the cat related story on the front page of The Times? Grin

notangelinajolie · 05/04/2019 00:30

Thanks colouringinpro - and I do hope your dcs dad is able to get his medication.

TokyoSushi · 05/04/2019 00:47

PMK thanks as always!

AutumnCrow · 05/04/2019 00:58

Cordelia excellent and poignant summary

wheresmymojo · 05/04/2019 01:03

SHIT

Does anyone have a link which actually states WHICH bipolar medication can't be stockpiled?

The Indy article doesn't say which one and I am completely reliant on my medication to function and pay my mortgage Sad

colouringinpro · 05/04/2019 01:20

I can't find that detail mojo. Can you ask your psych? This so situation is so appalling Flowers

Brexitisshit · 05/04/2019 01:25

The Newsnight piece on Wednesday deliberately avoided giving the exact medication names @wheresmymojo Apparently only a select few senior clinicians were warned and were then gagged with NDAs Angry

horseshit · 05/04/2019 01:33

A little bit of good news: Labour won the Newport West by election, their candidate is a remainers and supports a people’s vote. Super low turnout (37%), but hopefully it’ll give Corbyn a little push in the right direction.
Night all :)

wheresmymojo · 05/04/2019 01:37

FFS.

Well we would be forced into asking my leave voting, retired and very financially comfortable parents and in-laws to pay our mortgage and bills so that would serve them right.

I can't even go one day without my meds...very severe withdrawal effects which start just a few hours of missing a dose Sad

HazardGhost · 05/04/2019 01:56

wheresmymojo

-If Dr won't cough up the info -we've received there there reassurances until I asked pointed questions and got somewhere near the truth.

-Try to find the reason why they can't stockpile, is it refridgerated? Where's it made? How does it get here? Is there another drug available which does a simular job but covers more illnesses? Lots of this can be Googled.

-Loads of meds come from India in the raw form and are then transported to another country to be compressed into tablets, put into capsules, liquid etc.

-If you can't find an obvious reason for it not to be available be reassured. One of DPs meds is made in the EU and there's stories of drs not prescribing it for new patients, talked to Dr confirmed this med is a concern but the others I can't find any evidence of major problem and they are available in the US.

So even if your med hasnt been stockpiled if its widely available across the world at large theres a better chance it'll be available because it's accessible from different sources.

And.... remember that a no deal is far from certain, yes people are worried hell I'm worried, but, I am also realistic and no it's far from a sure thing.

Lots of love to you 💐

mrslaughan · 05/04/2019 02:36

@wheresmymojo could you afford to go to a private GP? Explaining the situation of being reliant on the medication and the anxiety it is causing at the thought about not being able to access it? If you can get a private script you will have to pay for the medicine, but most medicines are actually pretty cheap....
