Westminstenders: Compromise is a difficult word

Today the HoC had a water leak. It closed the house for the day. This isn't without consequence; any hope for the opportunity of Indicative Votes on Monday had cold water poured on it.

Meanwhile talks between talks between May and Corbyn were about as productive as you'd imagine. But apparently they had nice tea and biscuits.

The Cooper Bill, the last minute lock on May getting a extension to prevent no deal, has been in the Lords today. I say it's been in the Lords but Tories have filibuster Ed on procedure for over 6 hours to prevent the chance of it passing the house. Tory whips are timetabled until 6am but the opposition benches have vowed to go to 7.30am. So far the votes to ruin the procedure have failed comfortably so the opposition have the number. Its just a question of time.

The trouble is with the Lords not sitting tomorrow that means the bill won't get passed until Monday and there are fears it won't get royal assent until Tuesday.

The bill doesn't prevent accidental no deal but it would be a barrier to May.

It therefore looks like May's gambit with the EU to get an extension is to say her plan is ongoing talks with Labour for a cross party solution. It won't wash.

No deal looks more and more likely.

They outlasted the filibusters and passed the second reading unanimously.

RHTawneyonabus · 04/04/2019 22:43

Slight

Neither her nor David Cameron wanted to be the PM that broke Britain up.

But Brexit and it’s a sure thing. I’m shocked that polling suggests no deal is favoured outside London and Scotland.

Came across this post on my FB timeline from 7 years ago about Gove. Shock And he's being promoted as a potential future PM ConfusedAngry

.....

< Brilliant: Transcript of Gove being asked by Select Committee about the Government setting as a target that all schools should be classified as "Good" (in England, Ofsted is proposing taking away the "Satisfactory" classification and having a choice of ""Needing Improvement", "Good" and "Outstanding")....

His response does make you question his qualifications for his current role!

"Q98 Chair: One is: if "good" requires pupil performance to exceed the national average, and if all schools must be good, how is this mathematically possible?

Michael Gove: By getting better all the time.

Q99 Chair: So it is possible, is it?

Michael Gove: It is possible to get better all the time.

Q100 Chair: Were you better at literacy than numeracy, Secretary of State?

Michael Gove: I cannot remember.">

Best guesses on the outcome of the Newport by election ?

I am thinking there will be plenty of leavers out there who are just desperate for an opportunity to switch sides that would enable them to save face and not have to admit they're wrong. If we can talk to them and gently nudge them in that direction, maybe we can make a difference?

Agreed, @Flowerplower

golondrina · 04/04/2019 22:45

Pmk

prettybird
Gove will never EVER be forgiven by teachers / parents / governors / pupils / LEAs for the damage he did in education

prettybird · 04/04/2019 22:54

TiP - I'm just grateful he never had anything to do with education in Scotland - and can only apologise for the fact that he, a Scot, wreaked chaos in his English department(s) Hmm

PestyMachtubernahme · 04/04/2019 22:54

Pretty what is the problem?
Everyone can be above average, you just need to believe.

prettybird · 04/04/2019 22:55

Silly me Grin

CordeliaEarhart · 04/04/2019 22:56

I second TiP's comment about forgiving Gove. IMO state education has suffered long term damage due to him, and the "austerity" his believes in, despite the best efforts of (almost) everyone else involved in education.

TheMostBoringPersonEver · 04/04/2019 23:00

MPs voted by a majority of 384 to revoke article 50.

I saw this on my local FB. Where on earth did they get this from?

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 04/04/2019 23:02

Newsnight just now.

Telling us that Russia is behind the propaganda/news.
Westminstenders has been pointing this out for a very long time.

#justsaying

I'm actually slightly afraid to post this. Because I'm afraid of them too.

AutumnCrow · 04/04/2019 23:04

Michael Gove: By getting better all the time

Thank you for that post, @prettybird. As someone who has met Ruth Kelly, I had forgotten quite how appalling Michael Gove was in Education.

AutumnCrow · 04/04/2019 23:06

Watching Questiontime now.

David Lammy is good.

PestyMachtubernahme · 04/04/2019 23:07

Russia has a GDP roughly equivalent to Spain.
Oh
It could do with a strong and stable neighbour, that is unlikely to invade.

The USA has more interest in an unstable EU.

lonelyplanetmum · 04/04/2019 23:12

state education has suffered long term damage due to him, and the "austerity" he believes in

Yes it has. It's appalling. I know of headteachers laying off most TAs, stopping all IT teaching, having shared lessons for 60 plus in the school hall, donating their own salary increments back to the school and DT departments scratching around for resistant materials . It's ridiculous.

It isn't just austerity either. It's ideological. A huge segment of MPs resent the over 60% of GDP spent on education, welfare, health and pensions. It's an ideological shift that's happened before our eyes.

Icantreachthepretzels · 04/04/2019 23:14

She can’t bear the idea of being remembered as the PM who broke Britain apparently.

She should have thought of that before the Lancaster House Speech.

I would also like to second (third) the motion that teacher's will never forgive Gove .

Songsofexperience · 04/04/2019 23:20

A huge segment of MPs resent the over 60% of GDP spent on education, welfare, health and pensions.

What do they want to spend it on?

colouringinpro · 04/04/2019 23:21

Pmk. V scared now. My dcs dad relies on one of the meds that last night was announced they can't stockpile SadSad

Miljah · 04/04/2019 23:27

Yes, Gove's tenure in Education will be his lasting legacy.

The contempt in which he held education experts (and thus teachers, students, parents, society) and indeed, all experts- should be remembered.

Snake. With an appalling wife.

LonelyTiredandLow · 04/04/2019 23:28

Leave teacher friend said Gove was the best thing to happen to education...she's honestly on another planet.

Had to laugh catching up as I saw Flowers advocating how I usually talk to my leave friend. Only tonight I saw red and told her some home truths. I have been feeling increasingly that we have scant in common. Today she informed me that "people" apparently never go abroad to talk to people who live there, or sample food or culture. This from the woman who admitted last week she doesn't understand people going abroad. I said I certainly don't go abroad to be surrounded by Brits and eat stodgy English food (which she took great offence to) and she went beserk asking why I "think Germany is BETTER than us" !? There was a lot more on the build up but I've certainly not held any punches tonight about our differences on what consists of a holiday and her obsessive fear of anything different or how as a psychology teacher she should be aware humans the world over have the same basic qualities. I don't think I can face talking to her again. She is literally the worst parts of this thread (when you talk about the way people speak of benefits claimants - she is one of those) and despite knowing her for 2 decades, I just don't think I can do it any more. We are in two very different worlds. Sad

lonelyplanetmum · 04/04/2019 23:28

I'm actually slightly afraid to post this. Because I'm afraid of them too. ( Russia/Putin)

Me too!

There are some burning questions which Leavers never answer despite me asking repeatedly ! As there are some lurking and posting pleeease can some eager leaver have a go at explaining why Brussels is seen as a threat but Russia isn't? I genuinely do not understand
why leavers are not bothered about things like this :

  1. Novichok poisonings of Russian soil. Murderers confidently popping in and out of
Wessex Wiltshire soil.
  1. Regular air and sea incursions.
incursions-list
  1. Russian interest in political campaigns foreign~campaign-interference
  1. Weird Russian links with Aaron Banks.

Why isn't EU solidarity seen as preferable. Perhaps Leavers don't answer as they're too scared to reply as well?

notangelinajolie · 04/04/2019 23:31

colouringinpro could you post a link to the list/announcement if you have one please?
