How are you "managing" your "stockpile"?

With everything up in the air as it is, are you using it, leaving it well alone, adding to it or using but replacing so things are getting rotated?

I've got a bit of dried goods and toiletries which I'm using but replacing but leaving freezer food alone for now and just getting what I need in small amounts as I don't have much room in the freezer at all now.

Just wondered what everyone else is doing?

And release stash space.

Looks like we’re closer to a No Deal. I have made some homemade caramel by baking a tin of condensed milk (decanted into a bowl and Bain Marie)and it was delicious. So rich so just the thing to keep in the fridge to curb sweet cravings.

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/06/2019 00:59

Sounds lovely.

I have tried one new recipe which the children liked. Going to try more.the more variety they will eat the more resilient we will be as a household

prettybird · 16/06/2019 11:23

Freehops - you don't need to decant it into a bowl. You can just boil the condensed milk in its tin. My mum would do it for 3 hours for a firm caramel (which would then be sliced into 4 for dessert for the 4 of us). I used to take a tin to Uni and have a teaspoonful at a time as a sweet treat.

If you do it for just 2 hours, you get a more unctious, soft caramel.

Just make sure you don't let the saucepan run out of water while it's boiling Grin

Freefrops · 16/06/2019 13:53

Apparently it’s a safety thing that you’re not supposed to boil it in the tin anymore.

prettybird · 16/06/2019 14:32

In the 55 years that I can remember my mum making it and/or me following in her footsteps, I've never once known it to explode. Confused

I will continue boiling it Confused. Makes it much easier to store/transport. It's not difficult to make sure that the tin is covered in water Confused

Iirc, even Gary Rhodes recommended boiling the tin; I was most pissed off at him when he "taught" his viewers how to do this, as up until then it had been our family secret Wink

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/06/2019 14:37

Right, I am going back in. If you don't hear from me send help. I will be buried under the stairs...

I have pulled out half the stuff already need to sort it out and restash.

Dontlickthetrolley · 16/06/2019 18:40

I once saw a cooking programme where they made banoffee pie using the boiled can method back in the early 90s (but had to make it whilst Mum was out of the house as she would have a hissy fit incase it exploded!) That was a great recipe!

bellinisurge · 16/06/2019 20:00

Trying some more Jack Monroe Tin Can Cook recipes. The corned beef curry was yum. I made the carrot cake overnight oats - it's on her website if you don't want to buy the book: details are on there about making donations if you wish. Fussy dd has really enjoyed this version of overnight oats using tinned carrots whizzed up in milk. You add oats to this. Plus sultanas - I had some dried berries that I used up. Plus some cinnamon (I dislike cinnamon usually) and a spoonful of sugar if you fancy. I was very sceptical but I really liked it too.

bellinisurge · 16/06/2019 20:01

Corned beef chilli not curry.

BlackeyedGruesome · 16/06/2019 21:33

I have packed away the under stairs cupboard. Short date crisps sent away with kids dad and for here too. I have been too poorly to extract them before now.

Now I have a work surface covered in stuff as I am looking for the self raising flour. Can I sodding find it? Can I heck. I may have cursed DC and his sodding Brexit as the brexit stash slid gently to the floor. Got to pack it all back in the sodding cupboard again.

Ex has gone to fetch his flour. They are baking tomorrow but sodding cakes never turn out well with egg replacer.

Socksontheradiator · 17/06/2019 08:04

Long time lurker here and grateful for these threads. Am going through our stash and using shorter date items. Also increasing our stock now (also loving Tin Can Cook which I bought as paperback in case of power/kindle failure)
Bit wary of leaving it too close to Oct. Boris is/was talking about preparing for no deal, in which case I thought more people might start preparing too, and if they all rush at once that will cause a few shortages.
Also have bought a wind up radio/phone charger. Just in case.

Freefrops · 17/06/2019 09:25

A wind up phone charger???!!!! Where?? Where????????? Must have!

Amazon is your friend.

Socksontheradiator · 17/06/2019 11:24

Yes, Amazon and less than £20. And I forgot but it is also a torch.

RosemaryRemember · 17/06/2019 20:30

I noticed my popping corn was approaching a BB date. I didn't think it would be so short!

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/06/2019 22:25

It is fine years months afterwards. Blush

RosemaryRemember · 17/06/2019 22:27

I wondered if like dried beans it got more resistant to cooking!

RosemaryRemember · 17/06/2019 22:29

I imagined a burnt pan with a load of wee tough unpopped kernels, lol.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/06/2019 23:30

nah, they pop. just take off the heat once the popping has more or less stopped so you don't burn the popped pop corn. be careful of unpopped kernels as there are always a few.

BlackeyedGruesome · 18/06/2019 21:19

Using up the ready chopped and frozen veg from the freezer, road testing my freezing methods.

Notes to self!

One larger box of aubergine and mushroom mix.
One tin of toms not enough, two a little too much but will try when cooked.

BlackeyedGruesome · 20/06/2019 13:14

Was ok when cooked and did 4 portions.

Going to try making veggie curry from tinned veg.
Carrots, peas, chickpeas, chopped tomatoes and spices?

MotherWol · 25/06/2019 16:30

Since the April deadline came and went we've used through a fair bit of ours. It's been a good way to work out what we liked and what we didn't; I think if there were shortages of fresh fruit & veg we'd really feel it quite quickly as that makes up a large part of our diet and canned veg just hasn't been as popular.

If anyone's looking to restock, worth checking out the Asian/World Foods aisle of their local supermarket - at the moment our Morrisons has chickpeas, tomatoes etc for £2.50/case. Flour and rice are often good value from those ranges as well.

Mainlandeurope · 25/06/2019 16:33

We ate all ours 😲🤭
