How are you "managing" your "stockpile"?

With everything up in the air as it is, are you using it, leaving it well alone, adding to it or using but replacing so things are getting rotated?

I've got a bit of dried goods and toiletries which I'm using but replacing but leaving freezer food alone for now and just getting what I need in small amounts as I don't have much room in the freezer at all now.

Just wondered what everyone else is doing?

I'm going to do a stocktake, work out if there's anything that needs to be used up, and probably sort out some stuff for the foodbank. My main motivation for stocking up was in the event of no deal, and I think that risk is substantially reduced now, and there's a far greater chance we'll end up remaining. I'm not a general prepper, so this just means over the next couple of months I won't have to buy as much storecupboard food.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/04/2019 11:58

I prepped with quite a strong focus on treats - so DH got a creme egg with his coffee this morning

I imagine that sweets, crisps and coffee will be quite saleable on the black market.

bellinisurge · 12/04/2019 12:16

Or they cheer people up. Which is why there are a good thing to have when things are sticky or just because Grin

I bought some "full fat" high sugar Wink Irn Bru for ds for his birthday. 8 cans cost £16 Shock

....but he was very happy with his present Grin

I'm sure "treats" will have similar mark-ups when required Wink

I'm going to organise some kind of stock rotation system. Tbh I don't think anything goes out of date for months and months but I won't take the risk.

whenthewhistleblows · 12/04/2019 20:30

I’ve ‘liberated’ everything with a bbd of October. I will use it up as and when over the next six months, put aside the money I’ll be saving on my usual weekly grocery bill and then restock in September/Oct if no deal is still lingering.

I’m mainly advance purchasing for a buffer against price rises rather than zombie apocalypse. If there’s a ZA me and the kids are toast.

BlackeyedGruesome · 12/04/2019 21:09

There are a few treats I will really enjoy from the stash. Tins will last. As would s lot of the fruit juice and soya milk if we did not use a lot of it anyway, hence having in stock.

I am wondering how long it will be before the twitchiness in supermarkets wears off and how long before we need to start stashing again.

I bought from savings but will need to replenish those savings now that the shopping budget is going to be cheaper.

WordsAndWorlds · 13/04/2019 10:00

I did a rotation yesterday, pulled the stuff that won't last long after Oct into my cupboards to replace closer to time if needed. But the rest is staying - most of the stuff I've stocked like pastas, olives, chopped tomatoes, tuna and tinned fruit that we eat a lot of in our diets - all have excellent shelf lives so I'm not worried for now. Coffee granules not such great dates but that's for them to be peak freshness - I'm quite sure coffee (and tea) are fine to use after their sell by dates if needed. Would rather have some stashed than not.

My biggest concern to keep an eye on is actually bottled water and that's regardless of Brexit - officials in our area seem to be getting quite panicky about the water supplies for the future. I intend to keep a substantial supply with good dates in for as long as I can and keep rotating it, plus water purifying materials.

BlackeyedGruesome · 13/04/2019 17:25

Coffee is fine post date. Currently drinking past bb date Dou Egberts that was in my leaving ex stash that was at the far back bottom corner of the cupboard.

bellinisurge · 14/04/2019 19:39

Went through my sweets and puddings stash and made a date order list. Dh and dd currently demolishing a mini microwave steam pudding each that had a best before date of June 2019. Will replenish as and when.

BlackeyedGruesome · 15/04/2019 08:53

I will be cooking a lot of potatoes. 12.5 kg of them. Grin

Ds likes fish pie so will try that, but also need to work out a vegan version for DD who is allergic vegetarian. Possibly butter bean pie?

Worth increasing my repertoire before another possible no deal situation and generally increasing resilience if other things go pear shape.

You stockpiled Instant???? The rest of us have beans and a grinder and are considering buying raw beans and rigging up a roaster in the garden shed for that true fresh taste.

BercowsSilkTie · 15/04/2019 11:43

I've defrosted some lentil dahl for dd1 and me to have tonight. I'll defrost some soup later this week for me and ds to have as the girls are with their FF for half the week.
I wish we all liked more of the same thing!

BlackeyedGruesome · 15/04/2019 23:52

Inner city flat has neither own garden nor shed.

MrsJonesAndMe · 18/04/2019 20:58

I've made a list and will be using up supplies instead of buying in. Will worry again after the summer if needed.

We opened the 2kg bag of rice today. Living on the edge! 😂

Langrish · 18/04/2019 21:08

Keeping it all stashed, think we may need it yet. All very long dated except some milk that expires in July/August, which we’ll use. Dried/tinned goods will go on ad infinitum and meat/fish is all good in the freezer for at least a year from purchase (beginning March).

MadAboutWands · 18/04/2019 21:12

I’m using stuff now because of the dates. So flour for our bread maker, pasta, rice etc.... Also things in freezer.

My plan is to reduce our food bill for the next couple of months and use that to rebuild the stock up if needed in September!

BercowsSilkTie · 18/04/2019 21:32

I've opened my rice too! Had some with our frozen lentil dahl.
I'm very much enjoying lowered shopping bills. I haven't needed to do my weekly shop this week and had great pleasure in going to the local supermarket earlier and buying lots of fruit. I need a detox from all the refined sugar I've eaten recently bastard kitkat problem so I might even break with the tradition of toast for breakfast and have some mango, banana and pineapple. Am not sure my stomach will cope with all that acid though. It's not a happy tummy at the best of times Sad

SaveOurSausages · 26/04/2019 18:47

Are you all restocking again for October? Most of my tins and dry stuff has use by 2020 so all ok. I'm using up freezer food but keeping a note of what is being used as I assume I should replace closer to when new Brexit date happens?? So I'm not really saving money...

bellinisurge · 26/04/2019 19:10

I'm a general prepper so i keep a good buffer of shelf stable stuff anyway.
I'm using this period to test new things I have and, where there is something the household particularly likes, I get some more.

Cloudtree · 26/04/2019 19:12

I've been using bread mixes, UHT milk, potatoes, cheese, butter, apples and butternut squash. I then have a list of the things I'm using and I'm jotting them down to be replaced.

NoWordForFluffy · 26/04/2019 19:27

I need to make more bread now I've got the use of both arms again. But I'll wait until we get our new oven in a couple of weeks as ours has a damaged seal so I don't get the oven spring like I should.

BlackeyedGruesome · 28/04/2019 00:11

We have run out of milk as we ha e been away. Ex has extracted a tin of Nido from under the stairs just in case there is not enough for ds's breakfast and my coffee.

I am reluctant to faff about under there as I buggered my back doing exactly that last Wednesday.

MrsJonesAndMe · 28/04/2019 06:06

We are using ours now and will reassess come September.
