So how are the celebrating going?

Didn’t exactly go to plan did it?

Has it started to sink in what a fucking mess this all is?

As a complete remainder I see events unfolding almost with my hands over my eyes. It's like 'what the fuck has happened!?'

After the referendum the leavers were jubilant and remains were full of righteous indignation. A bit like after the World Cup, where anyone that cared, got swept along to think 'It's coming home'. It didn't. Everyone got on with life and shit. For two years we've all (mostly, other than the most vociferous) just carried on but now ... at crunch point the country is so divided, with, seemingly, no middle ground. Arguments go round and round with no resolve. It's an unsolvable conundrum (brought about by the family ckeot Cameron). The country is on its knees! And it's only going to get worse.

Without being alarmist I think this is heading into civil war territory unless someone just takes some control. May isn't doing that. We're on the naughty step with the EU but we're not listening or caring. It's a fucking disaster.

Bearbehind · 29/03/2019 22:49

I revert back to the point I keep making.

If no deal was going to happen it would have happened today.

Any other deal is shit compared to what we have now so there’s no point in opting for that.

So revoke is the only viable option.

If you disagree, argue your case with something better than ‘we won’

Tell us why something between no deal and revoke is worth it.

Perhaps I am. Perhaps I am thick too. Quite probably although it is not great for my self`esteem to hear that from a complete stranger. However I know lots of people agree with me, including commenters I very much admire. We have to find common ground.

Bowchicawowow · 29/03/2019 22:52

Every referendum bar one has been advisory. That is correct. They have all been politically binding and the result in each one has been honoured. If we lose our democracy we'll have bigger problems than Brexit.

Jason118 · 29/03/2019 22:52

Being wrong is not the same as being thick!

Bowchicawowow · 29/03/2019 22:54

Bear The problem is that people were asked a very simple question. In or out. The referendum should never have happened because leaving the EU is just not that simple. However, we should have had this argument before the vote, not afterwards. That happened because nobody thought we'd leave. Sadly, the people who have been fucked by the Tories and pissed off over MPs expenses gave the political class a kicking. Even Caroline Lucas admitted that and said she didn't blame them.

Bowchicawowow · 29/03/2019 22:56

Being wrong is not the same as being thick.

Yes, but posters are asking if I need things explaining to me again. It's insulting because they are saying I am thick.

Peregrina · 29/03/2019 22:56

Watching channel 4 news earlier it was clear that leavers are furious.

The rent -a -mob crowd of 'Tommy Robinson' followers are furious, but on other threads Leavers assure us that the majority are not like that. Which is it? Where is the demonstration of peaceful Leavers then?

Bow I totally agree, the referendum was flawed beyond belief from the start.

Which is exactly why we shouldn’t screw the country on the back of it’s result.

The stupid fuckers who should have dealt with the discord, ie the government of the day, should be held accountable for the problems.

They should not have the opportunity to pass it off as the fault of the EU

OP posts:
Bowchicawowow · 29/03/2019 22:59

All other referendums have worked on the basis they would be binding. We were told this was no different.

Bowchicawowow · 29/03/2019 23:02

I don't disagree Bear. However I genuinely fear that our democracy would be utterly destroyed if this precedent is allowed to stand.

Bearbehind · 29/03/2019 23:02

Bow whether you were a Remainer or Leaver, your points have no substance.

Tell us why we should support a result which will

  • destroy our economy
  • make us even more of a laughing stock than we are now
  • put us on the back foot with every trade deal possible

and we might listen.

Could we get back to the tile of the thread? Where are the street parties happening?

Well this thread is fascinating as I'm learning a few things, as my late Father used to say you're never too old to learn so never close your mind.
Wise words Dad

Bearbehind · 29/03/2019 23:05

Democracy isn’t about those who got off their arse to vote in the referendum, for the first time in their lives, based on promises that can’t be delivered.

It horrifies me to think that others really believe this,

It's a bit cold out there tonight. We've postponed it for a couple of weeks.

NameChanger22 · 29/03/2019 23:06

We can either have a few million upset people (possible riots) with food and medicines

or

A few million upset people (possible riots) without food and medicines.

I pick the first option.

Revoke.

Bowchicawowow · 29/03/2019 23:07

I voted Remain. I agree with Ken Clarke who said nobody knows what the consequences of leaving the EU will be.

I don't believe much of what politicians say. I do worry if we throw democracy out of the window we are truly screwed.

Bowchicawowow · 29/03/2019 23:08

How do we go about making the second referendum binding?

bobiana · 29/03/2019 23:08

I just can’t understand why people have to take a side and viciously attack those on the other side.

We’re all in this together.

All any of us have done is put a cross on a piece of paper. That’s all.

The blame, which ever side you think you’re on, should be pointed squarely at the fools in government, not at each other.
