Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

OogieMcBoogie · 20/03/2019 23:58

TokyoSushi · 20/03/2019 23:58

PMK what a fucking disaster this is

Cackleweb · 21/03/2019 00:01

I still can't decide if this whole sorry mess is down to incompetence and hubris or design.

Lisette1940 · 21/03/2019 00:05

Slumps sadly onto thread. PMK.

CatGoals · 21/03/2019 00:06

I’m a Brexiteer and she didn’t enrage me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

tobee · 21/03/2019 00:08

I came on to ask why would Brexiteers be enraged by May's speech and then I see CatGoals post above. So I ask again. Anyone?

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 00:10

Shameless PMK. And thanks red.

prettybird · 21/03/2019 00:37

I think you/we cling on to design because you're rational. She's not clever enough for this to all be design.

prettybird · 21/03/2019 00:44

The petition to leave without a deal had managed to get to 369,662 in over 5 months

The petition to Revoke A50 has got 325,848 signatures (and rising Wink) in a day Smile

Hopefully, by the time I check again after I get up, it will have overtaken the Brexiter petition Grin

I've been thinking about the similarities between the Tory leadership and the Labour leadership atm. With the party within the party they both have; ERG and Momentum. And the local party membership being buoyed by like thinking entryists. And the leadership only seemingly listening to the party within the party. The extremists. So there's often a dichotomy that local parties are going to be relatively extreme compared to the electorate. And that's going to be a problem when sitting MPs find themselves under scrutiny and threatened with deselection by the newly extremist local party despite having been elected by the moderate constituency electorate.

Sorry if that's inarticulate. But for different reasons, Jeremy Corbyn was/is only looking to his supporters and ignoring the sitting MPs. Now May has been doing similar.

May and Corbyn seem to be quite similar personalities. Totally lacking in ability to listen to various sides of argument within the party, bringing elected members together, able to compromise, be pragmatic and welcome a broad church. They seem both to be awkward, unclubbable people (shy?), coming across as quite grumpy and not good with the media. Tone deaf to presentation (although Corbyn has arguably been advised better at this). Both very different from their predecessors Cameron and Blair. Who, ironically, both left office under their respective big clouds, the referendum and the Iraq war.

Hello, recession and MPC hike

Thank you to all contributors.

Can we please have the Olympics back? Especially the last bit before Mo Farah crosses the line?

NotNowMrTumnus · 21/03/2019 01:37

And especially before the bit where Boris got stuck on the zip wire. We should have known then ... 🤦‍♀️

NotNowMrTumnus · 21/03/2019 01:39

Putting this here in case anyone needs a reminder

At what point do we confirm this isn't a democracy any more?
Just thinking before Martial Law comes in, is there anything at all we can ask MP's/anyone to do to take away power from this crazed woman hell bent on forcing No Deal through spite?

BestIsWest · 21/03/2019 05:49

Pmk

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 21/03/2019 05:59

The Revoke petition is at 369;000 signatures.
When people get up,and see that god awful statement in the breakfast news, the counter will probably start spinning again.

Can we send a link to the petition to the EU ? (not even joking)
