Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

Has it gone to your junk mail @SingaSong12

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 07:50

People I know on FB coming for the march are coming from Bristol, Brighton and Cambridge!

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 07:51

We need more up North to sign. Leeds anyone?

bellinisurge · 21/03/2019 07:51

Signed petition and donated to the March via go fund me - can't go myself. I NEVER do either of these things.

pepinana · 21/03/2019 07:53

I want to march on Saturday but I can't really cope with crowds Sad

Mistigri · 21/03/2019 07:53

Don't get me wrong - I'd love it to be genuine and it has definitely spread like wildfire on social media.

People are certainly very angry and very worried.

But it only takes 20 seconds and doesn't cost anything to sign a petition. Big government climb downs are far more likely if people take to the streets. I don't know about your circles, but among my U.K. friends and colleagues I have get to find more than 2 or 3 people who will be attending. I know more people who will be travelling from France. I desperately hope that Saturday will be big - bigger than the first one - but I am concerned that many, many people have just switched off.

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 07:56

With the march even if you hang out in Green Park it looks as if you are swelling the numbers a bit?

We are all disheartened but it's desperate measures. Sign the petition and march. Why not?

If you can manage it - join the periphery of the march for 30 minutes then go to a museum.

Even for the undecided lukewarmer remainers - it's a day out in London. Why not?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/03/2019 07:56

Pepinana there are spots that you can wave the march on without actually being in the crowd. Would that be something you would like to try?

Songsofexperience · 21/03/2019 07:58

You know what would work? If all those going to the march put on a yellow vest. THAT might grab her attention.

1tisILeClerc · 21/03/2019 07:58

Although the petition takes data on your email address and postcode in all countries, the map should be 'global'. It would be interesting to know roughly where the 'outside UK' votes are coming from.

phpolly · 21/03/2019 07:58

Petition at over half a million now. Why not sign - it can't hurt
Marching on Saturday for sure

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/03/2019 07:58

Im bringing along 3 people who've not been to one of these marches before, if everyone who has been one one before can bring one extra person then it would be the biggest march in UK history.

LittlePickleHead · 21/03/2019 08:00

I marched in October and I am passionate about it, but due to DH being away and having to drive my DD somewhere important for 2pm, I wouldn't be able to get there until 3pm. Is it still worth getting there to bulk the numbers do you think? I know it was still going strong at that point last time.

Any idea where a good point to join at that time would be?

Panicking a lot. We are moving a week after Brexit date. So can't even stockpile. And worrying taking on a bigger mortgage was a huge mistake.

Incredulous that it's come to this point.

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 08:00

I have two first time marchers now coming. One of them is an NHS very senior consultant -FFS.

SingaSong12 · 21/03/2019 08:01

MissMalice unfortunately not, I checked spam (and my email when I completed the form.). Great to see the total rising.

Songsofexperience · 21/03/2019 08:01

On second thought no... I wouldn't want to be associated with those knuckle staggers....

Yes!

Songsofexperience · 21/03/2019 08:02

(Too little sleep)

67chevvyimpala · 21/03/2019 08:02

I'm looking at tickets now

Mistigri · 21/03/2019 08:03

Scrub that last post, turns out a bunch of people from my Facebook at attending on Saturday and my notifications have gone bonkers. Maybe May's speech last night did some good after all! Just not how she intended.

Peregrina · 21/03/2019 08:03

Yes, it's still worth coming at 3pm. If it's like the last one, the tail end of the march will only just have started moving.

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2019 08:03

Pmk

frumpety · 21/03/2019 08:03

Lonely up North and have signed Smile

GroovieGazelloo · 21/03/2019 08:04

Oh. That is good news Mistigri. 👍
