Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

I cannot fathom the behaviour or any of them!

TheABC · 21/03/2019 07:10

Watching the revoke petition grow is almost soothing. I wish I could believe it will make a difference.

67chevvyimpala · 21/03/2019 07:13

Morning.

Quietly panicking but will koko.

teaandbiscuitsforme · 21/03/2019 07:16

Can somebody link the page to donate for transport to the march? I can't find it on the last thread.

Mistigri · 21/03/2019 07:17

I signed and shared it, but that petition is definitely being gamed. If it were being signed only by people who have a genuine right to sign, it would have slowed overnight.

I don't really understand what is going on, except that a bad situation just got worse.

And out of the eye of the media, roro traffic to Dover is still being disrupted and customs officers are still creating huge queues for Eurostar passengers by imposing post-Brexit-type controls.

I was wavering re the march but DS and I are definitely coming. Might be our last chance to visit the U.K. for a while.

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 07:21

The petition did slow overnight. I think enough people are up until 2 am and then others are awake at 5am so there's just a period in the middle where I think it slowed down?

I woke in the night and signed it myself about 1.30am!

londonloves · 21/03/2019 07:22

The petition is going up radically every time I refresh so either there's something fishy going on or major viral activity.

OutwithMyRemit · 21/03/2019 07:24

Placemark Means Placemark

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 21/03/2019 07:25

Just been watching the breakfast news and interview with Barry Gardiner, shadow Brexit minister.
So Jeremy Corbyn is going to Brussels too.
Labour is pro Leave as they have so many Leavers as constituents.
However they keep speaking about Theresa May’s red lines. That she has been intransigent; will not move them or negotiate with Parliament.

So can anyone explain to me what these Red lines exactly are please?

GroovieGazelloo · 21/03/2019 07:26

Good morning All,
Mistigri, thé pétition did slow during the night and I for one shared the link with lots of people before I went to sleep ( which was late). A lot have got back to me saying they've signed. I hope they're passing it on.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 21/03/2019 07:26

I think the petition will be half a million by the time people get to work this morning.

Loletta · 21/03/2019 07:27

Both Corbyn and May showed their true colours last night. I'm trying to come to terms.with what yesterday's events mean but really struggling.

Peregrina · 21/03/2019 07:27

I hope the petition is not being gamed, although the way its increasing every few seconds looks fishy, and would I am sure lead to it being ignored/taken down, but when you look at the map, the signatures are coming from strong Remain areas.

Hopelesscase28 · 21/03/2019 07:27

Yeah I signed it about 12.30am. Then forwarded the link to everyone I know and some of them signed it too.
I’m getting more anxious about the real possibility that I won’t be able to medication that my life depends on - insulin is pretty much all imported as are the pump supplies I rely on - I literally have a day to live if I don’t have any insulin.

I cannot believe it has come to this. Maybe if you’re rich and healthy then you just don’t give a fuck about brexit and the risk of no deal.
I also have bright friends with very good careers who have zero interest in politics. A couple had no idea when brexit was happening when I spoke to them last week about it.

WordsAndWorlds · 21/03/2019 07:27

Wailing and rocking. Am currently fairly useless.

Come and join us. We need to show May that 'You' isn't Us.

BiglyBadgers · 21/03/2019 07:29

Labour is pro Leave as they have so many Leavers as constituents.

Yet their membership is overwhelmingly remain so supporting leave is a dangerous game for them in terms of loosing existing support with no guarantee they'd gain new support from leavers.

GroovieGazelloo · 21/03/2019 07:31

When we see the speed these threads are going at, the speed of the petition signing seems right to me.
I think May just added more fuel to the fire last night.

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 07:32

Why are people casting doubt on the petition? The votes are coming from Remain areas. Petitions can grow fast when people bother..there are half of 66 million people (or more than half) available to sign it.

It's not growing fast enough for my liking !

BiglyBadgers · 21/03/2019 07:33

I've seen other petitions do similar peregrina in terms of being able to watch the numbers grow though this petition is sustaining it in a way I haven't seen before. I don't think it's being gamed. I think a lot of people are really fed up.

Those sky polls posted earlier were a stark illustration of how angry people are with the government right now. I suspect revoke has become a bit of a fuck you option in the same way leave was on the original referendum. Which is sort of amusing.

averylongtimeago · 21/03/2019 07:34

462 thousand now.
Coming to something when a petition looks like the only way forward

GroovieGazelloo · 21/03/2019 07:34

Thankyou for your commitment Badkitten.

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 07:35

Any lurkers please sign the petition against this mess and encourage friends and family to do so!

Please sign if you live on a Leave or Remain area. Here's another reminder..

I'd love to go on the march but it's a bit far from me up here. If I didn't have small kids I'd be hopping on a night coach.

teyem · 21/03/2019 07:36

O was up at 5am and it was going up in 40-45 increments at that point, rather than the 250ish now.
