Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

Dh, Dd (2) and I will all be marching for the first time on Saturday. We couldn't come to the one in the autumn because we all had d&v.

We've got EU flag bunting and we're looking forward to it!

Peregrina · 21/03/2019 08:04

So May has united the country then.

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 08:05

FrumpetyStar

Don't think I can persuade my elderly Yorkshire relatives, sadly!

Runningintothesunset · 21/03/2019 08:06

Over 1/2 a million...

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/03/2019 08:06

Pmk

Mistigri · 21/03/2019 08:07

I tried to persuade my (very remain) FIL to come but it was a big ask given that he has had a heart attack and stroke recently (good recovery but I understand why he's not travelling).

MadAboutWands · 21/03/2019 08:08

PMK

PigeonofDoom · 21/03/2019 08:11

I wish there were some regional marches as well, it’s pretty much impossible for me to get down to the London ones. Regional marches would also show that the whole country cares about this and stop the press banging on about the London elite. If anyone knows any local marches up north, let me know!

TheElementsSong · 21/03/2019 08:11

New thread!

I have an update...

Last night after all that discussion, we donated coach fares to the local pro-Europe coach organisers. Slept terribly as did DH. At some point in the wee hours of the morning, he got out of bed and went downstairs.

When I came down to breakfast, DH said "I was too angry to sleep. I've booked a hotel - we're driving to London!'

SO WE ARE MARCHING!!!!!!!

I'm going to lurk on OYBBK's Marching thread for placard ideas Grin

pepinana · 21/03/2019 08:11

Wow the petition is at 525k

Hopelesscase28 · 21/03/2019 08:11

Yes I can’t get to London- I just can’t afford it right now - but somewhere nearer (midlands) I would go.

keepforgettingmyusername · 21/03/2019 08:12

It's a sad stage of affairs when you're watching a petition all morning hoping it makes difference. I think it'll get to a million then that'll be it. Why don't people care more about things Sad

67chevvyimpala · 21/03/2019 08:12

Oh I wish we could all go!

BiglyBadgers · 21/03/2019 08:12

I was at the hairdresser's yesterday (first cut in three years) and this silver haired guy in his 70s at least was there, very posh accent, saying how he and some friends were thinking of going on this march because "the whole things a bloody mess!"

I can't go because it's dd's birthday and we arranged a big day out ages ago and it's all booked, but I have signed the petition because anything that makes people feel part of a group and a movement rather than a single point of despair is a good thing. We need some sort togetherness right now and we'll need it even more when we drop out with no deal.

prettybird · 21/03/2019 08:14

I don't think the petition will make any difference with May and the rabid Brexiteers. She and they are lost causes - stuck in a dead end of dogma. But the speed with which it will reach a million (and beyond) might cause give other MPs cause for thought Smile

prettybird · 21/03/2019 08:15

Kwazi Kwarteng currently on BBC Breakfast totally misrepresenting what Tusk said Hmm Why am I not surprised? Angry

Songsofexperience · 21/03/2019 08:15

Mostly I think the message to TM should be: don't presume to know what we think.

LonelyTiredandLow · 21/03/2019 08:16

Just going to try to find a red toothbrush for the march today Grin
My EU hoodie and dd's jumper arrived yesterday (couldn't find an EU one for her but got a Paddington Bear "Immigration isn't illegal"). Had lots of ppl on my fb asking if we are marching - it's going to be well over 700k I think!

HazardGhost · 21/03/2019 08:17

PMK not had coffee yet

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 08:17

But the speed with which it will reach a million (and beyond) might cause give other MPs cause for thought

Yes.

At the end of the day- May rides roughshod over half the people, her own cabinet, and Parliament.

She won't listen to a petition or a march but others will.

LittlePickleHead · 21/03/2019 08:18

I have a question which has been bubbling in my head for a few days.

If we do accidentally no deal next week, there is a high chance of a GE in the near future I would imagine.

If Labour (or TIG) stood on a platform of negotiating a CU or (even better) joining the SM and then won the election, is that actually a possibility?

Just wondering that even in the worst case scenario there could be a way of getting out of the mess and whether there will still be any hope?

LonelyTiredandLow · 21/03/2019 08:19

BBC Newsround (the kids news) just had a very biased bit on about Brexit - only mentioning how people wanted to leave on 29th March and were frustrated that they can't!
Shock

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 08:19

When I came down to breakfast, DH said "I was too angry to sleep. I've booked a hotel - we're driving to London!'

SO WE ARE MARCHING!!!!!!!

Yay Elements!

Pilcrow · 21/03/2019 08:20

540,000 now. Will be a good bit more by the time I've typed this.

I have a close family member who could well die if no-deal happens.

I am terrified.
