Westminstenders: Waiting for the vote that never comes

March 12th (or earlier): Second vote on May deal.
March 13th: Vote on No Deal if WA fails to pass on the 12th
March 14th: Vote on an a50 extension.

The March 14th vote is the most important, though the others are still important and we have no idea how nuclear the ERG or the moderates will ultimately go in terms of blowing the Tory Party apart.

Even if May's Deal does pass we need an extension. We've known this a long time, from a British POV, but the EU have now explicitly said that they will need a technical extension to ratify the WA if we now approve it. We also need an extension if we decide to go for No Deal because we will have legal chaos as the HoC hasn't passed the necessary legislation for No Deal either. But this isn't the EU's problem...

With feelings in the EU becoming more bitter the idea of an extension might be more difficult to come by, if May hasn't passed the WA by the 29th March though.

The EU and May are therefore both aligned with a mutual interest to get the WA passed by 29th March for this reason. Which might mean the EU do play tough on granting us an extension (at least initially) if we formally ask for one on the 14th March in order to help persuade the HoC vote for May's deal before the deadline of the 29th March.

I think we should expect the WA to fail to pass on the 12th March. There just aren't the numbers for it. Then hardball politics from the EU commence on the 14th - it might well be a long extension or nothing. May will then try and do MV3 before the 29th March. If it passes, May's happy and the EU are happy. If it fails... well... I think the EU might give way to a shorter extension at that point, but very begrudgingly. And the idea will be for MV4 or the July cliff edge.

Until then we sit waiting forever for the sun to start going around the earth and for pigs to fall out of the sky.

Yep I'm disabled DGR!

So is DW - 2ndary progressive MS. But as a non-pensioner, I'm guessing she'll have a few more assessments to offset the lack of yours, since the other information in the announcement was the target of 1,000,000 more disabled people "in work" by 2027.

Heaven forbid if some French ever got a bit annoyed.
The Gilet Jaunes protests are reportedly having 'cost' about €1-2 Billion but a 'knock on' effect for other businesses of up to €10 Billion. Not good.

Just to add to the mood music, Debenhams woes continue ...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47453271

When the one in Redditch goes, you start to question the point of the Kingfisher centre, which has been at about 60% capacity for the past 5 years ...

Alders went (they've never managed to re let all the space);
Woolworths;
BHS/M&S (again, most space still free);
T.J. Hughes;
Eds Diner (part of the Giraffe chain that announced problems yesterday);
JJD Sports;

that's before you start on shops like Boots and WH Smiths that look like they're in permasale mode ...

(Other depressed areas are available. Terms and Conditions apply. Your country is at risk if you do not keep up engagement.)

I reiterate my constant surprise that W H Smith's is still gong. It can only be the airport and train station outlets that are propping them up.

Ditto debenhams. Last 2 times I've been it seemed mum and I were the only ones in the store!

I think places like cath kidston and body shop could be next.

You mean like the monopoly* money that the USA will be charging if it gets it's way?

*Other board games are available.

67chevvyimpala · 05/03/2019 12:50

Boots do too, actually.

I'm nursing a child with a nasty flu like bug atm so am stocking up on cold and flu remedies.

They are already very expensive (£11 for pain relieving throat gargle and £5 for paediatric cough mixture for example) I'm worried how the less well off will buy them after brexshit.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 05/03/2019 12:58

Found you all! Wondered why the other thread was so quiet Grin

Where I live Body Shop is still heaving with tourists and vegans/clean living types.

Clarks is emptier than usual (at least it was the 2 times we went in over half term) and agree re WH Smith. Am always amazed at how many card shops each town 'needs' (we have 5 in our town and I've no idea why!) so I will have a punt at some of those decreasing as cash flow becomes tighter and possible paper and printing ink gets more expensive.

Everyone says that but their high street operation has only shrunk very slightly and it still makes good profits. Their airport/station business continues to expand.

67chevvyimpala · 05/03/2019 13:11

Our high street 1 road consists of: 7 hairdressers/barbers, 3 boutique gift shops, 3 nail bars, s chip shop, an estate agent, 2 discount stores, an overpriced clothes shop, a funeral home, 4 cafes and 5 restaurants.

We also have 1 small co op, a post office and a chemist's.

No bank, no butchers, no grocers, no bakery...

No idea what'll be left once folk can't affird to eat out, massages, nails, coffees, and overpriced linen shirts.

67chevvyimpala · 05/03/2019 13:13

....and my nearest town is almost as bad!

They do have a boots, w h smiths and a Clark's shop.

I know Amazon are evil but when you have as little choice as I do without travelling 20/30 miles it's what you have to do.

Oh! I forgot! We have a toy shop too.

🙄

As if we didnt already know the Tories are just in it for the rich people

The Prime Minister, Theresa May, has come in for severe criticism after cancelling a crucial vote on a key piece of Brexit legislation after it became clear that a cross-party amendment – to essentially name and shame the bosses of tax avoiding companies – was going to succeed.

I sympathise but you could try ebay. Most things on Amazon can be bought just as cheaply on ebay from independents.

Millyonthe · 05/03/2019 13:30

Amazon really are evil.

SparklySneakers · 05/03/2019 13:33

Stupid question alert: just reading this:

www.theguardian.com/politics/blog/live/2019/mar/05/brexit-latest-news-hunt-concedes-tory-mps-could-be-given-free-vote-on-ruling-out-no-deal-politics-live?page=with:block-5c7e35dee4b09dbe4be92c43#block-5c7e35dee4b09dbe4be92c43

About Hunt saying that MPs could be given a free vote on no deal.

Does free vote mean they are not whipped and can vote how they like? Am still not sure why they are whipped either.

67chevvyimpala · 05/03/2019 13:36

I buy alot from e bay and etsy but sadly Amazon are so much cheaper for some things.

TalkinPaece · 05/03/2019 13:37

Dear Brenda
Please could you and Chazza and Wills and young Archie
summon your Prime Minister and inform her
that the only way to keep Britain Great is to Revoke A50
and let Wills load her directly into a helicopter from the garden of Buck House
and deliver her and her letter to Brussels.
Yours
