Westminstenders: Waiting for the vote that never comes

March 12th (or earlier): Second vote on May deal.
March 13th: Vote on No Deal if WA fails to pass on the 12th
March 14th: Vote on an a50 extension.

The March 14th vote is the most important, though the others are still important and we have no idea how nuclear the ERG or the moderates will ultimately go in terms of blowing the Tory Party apart.

Even if May's Deal does pass we need an extension. We've known this a long time, from a British POV, but the EU have now explicitly said that they will need a technical extension to ratify the WA if we now approve it. We also need an extension if we decide to go for No Deal because we will have legal chaos as the HoC hasn't passed the necessary legislation for No Deal either. But this isn't the EU's problem...

With feelings in the EU becoming more bitter the idea of an extension might be more difficult to come by, if May hasn't passed the WA by the 29th March though.

The EU and May are therefore both aligned with a mutual interest to get the WA passed by 29th March for this reason. Which might mean the EU do play tough on granting us an extension (at least initially) if we formally ask for one on the 14th March in order to help persuade the HoC vote for May's deal before the deadline of the 29th March.

I think we should expect the WA to fail to pass on the 12th March. There just aren't the numbers for it. Then hardball politics from the EU commence on the 14th - it might well be a long extension or nothing. May will then try and do MV3 before the 29th March. If it passes, May's happy and the EU are happy. If it fails... well... I think the EU might give way to a shorter extension at that point, but very begrudgingly. And the idea will be for MV4 or the July cliff edge.

Until then we sit waiting forever for the sun to start going around the earth and for pigs to fall out of the sky.

For now....

prettybird · 06/03/2019 12:13

"Lone parenting failures behind knife crime"

Melanie Philips last night on Sky's Press Preview was doing just that Shock - or more specifically, "lack of fathers"

MangoSplit · 06/03/2019 12:14

Pmk

DGRossetti · 06/03/2019 12:18

Melanie Philips last night on Sky's Press Preview was doing just that

Ah, Mad Mel ... who wouldn't know a fact if it hit her in the face. There really is nothing good to say about her whatsoever except possibly the use of an anti role model ?

LonelyandTiredandLow · 06/03/2019 12:37

Pretty
What the actual fuck! Lone parenting!

Let's blame the single mum's shall we? Oh let's not ensure fathers pay maintenance or have any penalties if they choose not to, let's not support flexible working while we put sanctions on the single mum's trying to work. Why are people dying? Can't be because of lack of police funding, must be the poorest section of society - nothing to do with us at the top, honest!
I've just seen an escaped goat wandering over my lawn Hmm

Ian Dunt was a good foil for her Grin

Off for my dog walk - have asked for that post to be deleted. As I said, red mist!

In the meantime quelle surprise! No further advances on Brexit talks.

prettybird · 06/03/2019 13:03

As dh said when we heard Cox in his bombastic manner describe the talks with the EU Commission as robust Hmm - "That means that he was rude and was annoyed that they weren't giving him what he wanted" otherwise he'd have said "constructive" Wink

He also said he wouldn't give any more details as the discussions are confidential. Unfortunately for him the EU is more transparent Grin

DGRossetti · 06/03/2019 13:14

That's a load of hogwash. He can't give any more details because there aren't any.

He may as well have said he can't give any more details because Mars is square to Jupiter in Cancer.

BorisBogtrotter · 06/03/2019 13:15

"He also said he wouldn't give any more details as the discussions are confidential"

Does anyone remember when leavers were here shouting about TTIP and how the negotiations being conducted behind closed doors was an example of the EU's lack of democracy?

Funny how things turn out ain't it.

DGRossetti · 06/03/2019 13:17

Off for my dog walk - have asked for that post to be deleted.

Not sure why ? No reason I can see.

Be curious if MNHQ do delete it. I've had a couple of deletions I requested turned down as MNHQ policy is made up on the spot not to remove posts unless they breach guidelines. Of course that doesn't explain the post of mine they did delete (on Westminstenders) which they admitted didn't breach guidelines, but "wasn't very nice".

DGRossetti · 06/03/2019 13:22

Just seen the second post ....

LonelyandTiredandLow · 06/03/2019 13:26

Well, the dog doesn't like the rain Grin so i'm back.
I just felt it was a bit too much personal information. I'm not bothered to name change generally as i'm not on here much other than to discuss Brexit.

1tisILeClerc · 06/03/2019 13:26

I can almost feel the rest of the world's trade negotiators straining at the leash to be let loose on the UK's wonderful negotiators.
Hundreds of years of pent up retaliation on the way.

Probably a product of an overactive imagination than a connection with reality Grin. I think globally, the massive indifference to Brexit has piqued the more gung-ho Brexiteers. Remember they're the sort whose bearing in almost every situation with a foreigner spells DON'T YOU KNOW WHO I AM ?

Peregrina · 06/03/2019 13:34

I thought it was a good post LonelyandTired - I am sick of seeing men get off scot free when it comes to supporting their children.

Aww, shame! I could just see the 'fox on the run' (lovely little ditty by Sweet).

As is this man ...

Are our new trade tariffs are still secret?

DGRossetti · 06/03/2019 13:48

Are our new trade tariffs are still secret?

Well the lack of them isn't ....

dontcallmelen · 06/03/2019 13:49

PMK thank you.

TalkinPaece · 06/03/2019 13:51

@PrettyBird and @BearBehind
I think the whole of MN got sick of my
"what three things will be better in your day to day life after Brexit"
but I never did get an answer Grin

greenelephantscarf · 06/03/2019 13:53

I'm organising a house move to europe for a relative.
instead of one lorry driver, they will have to use 2, so the rest times can be adhered to even with lengthy border waits.
and instead to 'up to 5 working days' after 29 march the movers say 'around 10 working days'

67chevvyimpala · 06/03/2019 13:54

Its something I've heard alot tbh.

Men falsifying their financials to get out of paying maintenance for their kids.

A friend of mine is going through this atm. Her STBEXH is employed by his family and they have "made him redundant" whilst still giving him his salary cash in hand. No proof though.

They have 4 kids ffs.

I consider myself very lucky I know/have known so many decent men.
