This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

That value pasta isn't bad. Half a bag of that, two eggs, 2oz butter, splash of milk and 4 handfuls of grated cheese and whatever ham/pepper/chorizo leftovers you've got and there's a nice dinner. It's actually even nicer with uht milk than fresh.

PrawnOfCreation · 08/03/2019 18:51

Meant to add, that does 4 of us easily.

BlackeyedGruesome · 08/03/2019 22:56

I do something similar with mushrooms and onions. used to do ham or bacon when we ate those.

it is nice with quark as well.

AdoraBell · 09/03/2019 01:01

The M&S canned chicken sounds interesting. Nearest one fir me is 30 miles away though, not sure if I CBA.

bellinisurge · 09/03/2019 07:02

M&S chicken is hugely expensive and still canned chicken. I'd rather have nice homemade sauces made from shelf stable ingredients with a bit of soya chunks in it. Or a nice homemade lentil curry.

Lwmommy · 09/03/2019 07:21

Went to Lidl yesterday and they have their 'Alps' range in which includes a shelf stable cheese and bacon potato rosti that lasts til 2020 ad just needs warming through in a pan.

BlackeyedGruesome · 09/03/2019 07:25

I have a couple of tins of chicken in case I am at the stage of heating it up and opening a tin of veg and chucking it in.

Cloudtree · 09/03/2019 10:09

The value pasta is absolutely fine. Both the penne and the spaghetti.

Brexitisshit · 09/03/2019 19:36

Stumbled across this site which has a lot of reviews of tinned meals /ready to eat fare:

studentmunch.com

I’m going to pick up the sainsbury’s tinned vegetable curry to try.

bellinisurge · 09/03/2019 19:46

Nice suggestion.

Graphista · 09/03/2019 20:32

I've had the veggie Sainsburys curry a few times a lot it's nice, not as nice as a proper home made one but its ok

Graphista · 09/03/2019 20:34

I'd say that review quite accurate, I usually have it with cous cous

mum2jakie · 10/03/2019 09:49

Thanks for the tinned curry suggestion.

I've been buying dried fruit - for jazzing up breakfasts/snacks in the absence of fresh fruit. Also buying dried bread items like Krisprolls and bagged brushcettas. At a push they can be used in packed lunches in the absence of fresh bread.

Brexitisshit · 10/03/2019 10:02

I noticed there in asda recently:

groceries.asda.com/product/packet-rice-risotto/napolina-cherry-tomato-basil-risotto/1000046667810

It seemed to have a reasonably long date & would be handy to have some ready to eat stuff as most of what I have in requires cooking from scratch. I might buy one to try.

BlackeyedGruesome · 10/03/2019 16:12

Dried fruit has the advantage of only being 30g per portion instead of the usual 80g.

I have finally managed to buy AAA batteries and batteries for the smoke alarm too.

Bought DD fake shreddies, as they have vitamin B12 in. I need to get ds some real shreddies.

Still no canellini beans in Aldi, nor washing detergent of the three sorts I need. Kidney beans have gone up in price too by 5p from 30p.

Bought a lot of dried fruit as we get through two packs a week as there are about 16 portions per pack and two of us have a portion each of raisins and sultanas on our breakfast along with dried apricots, a packet of which lasts two weeks for us.

listsandbudgets · 11/03/2019 10:49

Lidl seem to have stopped storing tinned potatos?? Just dropped into buy a few cans and they''ve disappeared - not even the shelf label is there.

However now in proud possession of 2 kilos of red lentils, 2 kg of sugar, 48 toilet rolls (already had 24 so this was a top up) and 2kg of flour. Next time I'll be after chocolate (don't tell the DC's) UHT milk and more soups and tinned currys. Will have to get tinned potatoes else where which is a pain. Once I've got all of that my stash should be complete. We may end up eating more vegeterian food than usual if needs must but that's ok with me

How much UHT and milk powder are people buying in? We're a family of 4

@PhilippeTL , you should speak to Mumsnet HQ. And frankly no one should be going public about their preps. Get your face in the media as a prepper and you're telling people you have supplies which they might assume they have a right to.

AwdBovril · 11/03/2019 11:34

ListsAndBudgets - I have 6x 900g cans of Nido. Sadly it's Nestlé, but I couldn't find any other affordable full fat. I also have a couple of packs of skimmed, Morrisons sell it quite cheap, but it's not as nice as the full cream stuff. Family of 3 here.

mum2jakie · 11/03/2019 19:06

Quick Brexit shop in Asda after work. Sold out of the tinned meatballs that one of the kids eats. Long life milk and pasta looking low on the shelves.

I had gone looking for the Idahoan gratin mentioned in previous threads. It only seems to be stocked in Asda. Managed to get some although the dates aren't great (June 2019.) There are five of us to feed though!

A few varieties of tinned veggie curries in stock. The value kidney beans were 30p a tin and tinned new potatoes 50p a tin.

BlackeyedGruesome · 11/03/2019 19:52

Aldi had tinned potatoes recently and Morrisons last week.

I must remember to update the list and subtract one tin of kidney beans for DD's food tech and add 3 tins of butter beans.

The next couple of days may prompt people to start stocking up which could make things tricky in the shops. I am glad I have got most things already.

@BlackeyedGruesome yes I think this week could see the panic start.
Am worried my mum doesn't seem to have much. She's not one to step outside her food comfort zone and try new things. She's relying on frozen meat and fish and veg. She has little in the way of carbs. Not a big pasta or rice eater. No foreign food thank you Confused I'll speak to her again about what meals she's actually got.

I'll try to get to Morrisons for tinned potatos and UHT tomorrow (oh and chocolate - dd's major worry about Brexit is the possiblity of running out of the stuff - clever girl :) )

listsandbudgets · 11/03/2019 20:24

awdbovril thank you that's a useful guide
