This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

I've got a Morrisons delivery coming tomorrow. It's a mix of our Brexit stash and food for the next couple of weeks. We already have a Brexit stash but I just wanted to add to it.

Neither my DM (a remainer) or my MIL (a leaver) think it important to stock up on anything so I'm also trying to think about them too. As cross as I am with my MIL I won't see her short of anything, but I will enjoy reminding her that she is lucky that we are looking out for her. Nah actually, she can starve for all I care...

BlackeyedGruesome · 12/03/2019 00:30

I think I will try and do the last of my shopping tomorrow if I can. At least the long life stuff.

mum2jakie · 12/03/2019 06:52

It's all starting to feel very real now and I'm conscious that we get through a lot of food on a daily basis!

Cloudtree · 12/03/2019 08:52

I did another small top up yesterday and noticed various people buying multiples of things. The queues lidl were bonkers.

SparklySneakers · 12/03/2019 09:59

@mum2jakie it's mad how many snack things we go through in our house. 3 children, 1 adult. Eldest is 12 and always hungry. They can't manage bigger means though to try and cut down the snacks. I've tried stopping snacks and increasing meals but they can't eat a bigger meal. They are grazers like me. I just keep getting extra things each time I go to the shops.

Try not to worry @mum2jakie (I know that's a bit of a useless thing to say). No one has everything they need for every scenario.

Cloudtree · 12/03/2019 10:54

I've already started getting my DC into a different mindset about snacking. I've been emphasising how if they're hungry in between meals they can have toast, cereal or fruit.

BlackeyedGruesome · 12/03/2019 13:30

mine is happy to eat pasta, which is just as well as that is the only thing I can interest him in that will store.

he has just swapped his cereal preference, so my carefully stockpiled cereals are going to last a lot longer than expected. I need to get some more of the ones he has swapped to.

Cloudtree · 12/03/2019 13:32

mumsnet HQ rather misrepresenting the tone of our threads on stockpiling on Radio 4 Hmm

Cloudtree · 12/03/2019 13:34

I'm quite cross. We are not in any way accepting that we are causing shortages!

Completely downplayed and made this out to be some sort of joke.

oatmilk4breakfast · 12/03/2019 13:44

The wilful misunderstanding of how supply chains work continues. The deliberate obfuscation will actually get worse I’m sure. If things get back people will need someone to blame. No-one thinks properly anymore.

oatmilk4breakfast · 12/03/2019 13:44

Sorry that was a bit of a generalisation and doubtless untrue! When have any of us ever thought perfectly?! ☺️

bellinisurge · 12/03/2019 13:46

Thanks @Cloudtree . What a pile of bollocks. Lightweight nonsense as is often the case with You and Yours. I was interviewed on it yonks and yonks ago in an unrelated topic and it was the easiest ride I ever had.

Cloudtree · 12/03/2019 13:50

It was lightweight nonsense but it was MNHQ that I was really cross with. It misrepresented the tone of the threads completely.

SparklySneakers · 12/03/2019 13:50

Hehe I was one of the ones who said about utilising my own wind power Grin

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 12/03/2019 13:53

You and Yours should be a forum for careful consumer advice, looking at all the angles. Lazy journalism. Winifred Robinson had a reputation for being a smart journalist when she was on Look Northwest. I listen to it at lunchtime sometimes and she is really patchy these days.

SparklySneakers · 12/03/2019 13:56

I totally disagree with them saying we know we could create shortages ourselves by stockpiling. Not one single brexit prepper has said that on here that I'm aware of as we know how the supply chain works. It's only leavers and non-preppers that say prepping will cause shortages.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 12/03/2019 14:00

Again this whole "careful timely stockpiling well in advance " = shortages. Lazy lazy lazy thinking.
Panic buying brings shortages. Hence not panic buying in advance a few weeks or months before. But we are now in panic buying territory. Prepare to be blamed for being sensible.

SparklySneakers · 12/03/2019 14:08

Mum said Tesco was quiet today and a few empty shelves. Foil and clingfilm were in short supply.

BlackeyedGruesome · 12/03/2019 14:18

I may also have mentioned wind...

SparklySneakers · 12/03/2019 14:19

We should go into a joint business venture Wink

Cloudtree · 12/03/2019 14:32

You would think RowanMN would have read the threads perhaps before going onto national radio to discuss them..

bellinisurge · 12/03/2019 14:34

You would, wouldn't you. Probably too excited about being on national radio and too willing to go along with the narrative.

BlackeyedGruesome · 12/03/2019 15:27

It was like Brexit bingo...

It will be fiiiine
We won't starve

One thing did come out though, that there was no evidence that there was an increase in buying from the figures, thus we can not be at the same time causing shortages.
