Brexit

Does anyone genuinely think that things will continue exactly as they are if we crash out with no deal?

If so, what is your reasoning behind this?

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 08:40

What role do you have in this firm which will be magically unaffected by Brexit?

gamerchick · 14/02/2019 08:42

just get what you actually eat, what you can afford and what you can store. I've been recommending 3 days (I'm a prepper)

Belli I think the whole of mumsnet, the entire press and daytime telly that prowl the board's knows you're a prepper by now Grin

The EU is an unsustainable model that's fast becoming out dated. A large majority of our things don't come from the EU and have heavy taxes imposed because they pass through the EU. There will be bumps but why can't it continue relatively normally after we leave?

Helmetbymidnight · 14/02/2019 08:43

I‘m certain some remainers will be bitterly disappointed if brexit goes well
Confused
do brexiteers get really excited when they hear of job losses, companies moving, difficulties to recruit staff, trouble in ireland, etc. etc does that tell you your brexit is 'going well'?

TheoriginalLEM · 14/02/2019 08:43

Good plan. Im mot very good at stocking up on food which is daft really. Always sensible to have something in the freezer/cupboard for short weeks etc.

Good point about the dogs - our dogs have a specific diet are fussy bastards

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 08:44

@gamerchick , if someone has been sticking their head in the sand, I doubt they have seen my boringly repetitive postsGrin

InterchangeableEmma · 14/02/2019 08:46

iSiTbEdTiMeYeT1 The whole point of brexit is to change everything, is it not? It's odd to want that and simultaneously expect things to remain relatively normal.

FishesaPlenty · 14/02/2019 08:53

I’m a remainer, that works in the food industry, and our particular product is fresh fruit that is 100% imported. It will not be rotting in trucks, I can assure you of that.

The relevance of that comment would really depend on what the fruit is and where it's sourced. An assurance that our banana supplies will continue because they don't come from Europe to start with is rather less comforting than it would be to discover that a a major fruit importer has found a way to import fresh produce from the EU without risking any delays.

Omgineedanamechange · 14/02/2019 08:53

That would be outing. Senior management is all I’m prepared to say. And it’s not magical that some firms are prepared for brexit. It’s called planning.

gamerchick · 14/02/2019 08:54

Nah man they'll have been reading. I like you on these threads, you have a reassuring way about you. It does make me chuckle though Grin

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 08:56

I'm glad that your company's cash flow has allowed you to prepare for Brexit. Strangely other companies are not in the same position as you.
Looks like you will be in a position to make lots of money from your investment. I hope you charge preBrexit prices on all the fresh fruit and veg that you have access to from around the world.

TheElementsSong · 14/02/2019 08:57

It's odd to want that and simultaneously expect things to remain relatively normal.

It's Cake-and-Eat-It-Ism, basically.

InterchangeableEmma · 14/02/2019 08:59

Indeed so Elements

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 09:00

@gamerchick , I always feel the need to establish what little bona fides I have to explain my view.
But you are right, it is a bit comical at this point.
I've pretty much given up my "three day buffer bought slowly " mantra. Because I am not sure it is possible to do it slowly at this point, low budget or not.

hotwing · 14/02/2019 09:02

Hopefully it's another 'Millennium Bug'.

jasjas1973 · 14/02/2019 09:02

@Omgineedanamechange

Why has the food manufacturing industry got a vested interest in staying in the EU ?

bluebluewindows · 14/02/2019 09:03

Hooray! Bingo!

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 09:04

Curses @bluebluewindows , foiled again!

TheElementsSong · 14/02/2019 09:07

Damn!!! Grin

FishesaPlenty · 14/02/2019 09:12

A large majority of our things don't come from the EU and have heavy taxes imposed because they pass through the EU.

47% of our imports come from outside the EU, so that's a small minority, rather than a 'large majority'. And these 'heavy taxes' will continue under most varieties of Brexit anyway because we're going to be replicating EU tariffs for the foreseeable future.

bluebluewindows · 14/02/2019 09:12

Every time there’s a new report from road haulage companies, chambers of commerce and/or major manufacturers saying Brexit is potentially catastrophic (the CEO of the food and drink federation actually said the sector would be decimated), I add a few more items to my “forward purchasing”. And something for the food bank as well.
That’s pretty much every day now.

gamerchick · 14/02/2019 09:21

I dunno, say the first week in April as a cut off it might still be doable at a push. Shop smart and put off spending on none essentials until we know what's happening.

Anyone who mentions the millennium bug just makes themselves look cringy man.

Omgineedanamechange · 14/02/2019 09:25

Read my original post, cheap casual labour.

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 09:34

@Omgineedanamechange luckily there is a wealth of UK labour which can easily be paid at much higher rates without passing on the costs to consumers and ensuring maintenance of the food supply Hmm

Peregrina · 14/02/2019 09:34

Anyone who mentions the Millenium bug immediately shows one area where they are totally ignorant, but think that despite this, their opinion on the issue is worth something. I worked on the Millenium bug - I didn't know that I spent a few years just repeating slogans, I thought it was actual work.
