Brexit

Does anyone genuinely think that things will continue exactly as they are if we crash out with no deal?

If so, what is your reasoning behind this?

For about 3 or 4 days it'll seem normal and then it will be both shit and more expensive.

Sarahlou63 · 13/02/2019 19:09

Yes. Because I live in Portugal.

surferjet · 13/02/2019 19:12

I’m just wondering if this board will still be called brexit once we have actually made our ‘exit’?
It was called ‘the referendum’ at first.

Coppersulphate · 13/02/2019 22:09

I think it should then be called Independence

Jericho1 · 13/02/2019 22:18

I think it should be called Genocide.

Surely the whole point of Brexit is that things should not continue exactly as they are.

Johnson, Rees-Mogg, Davis, Fox, Gove, Raab, Farage et al convinced people that 'there would be no downsides to Brexit - only upsides.'

They had better be right, otherwise there are going to be a lot of very hungry and angry people in the UK - the 17m who discover that they were conned and the 16m who knew all along but have been dragged over the cliff as well.

EmperorBallpitine · 13/02/2019 22:23

Welllll I'd like to believe it will be alright, but everyone I know who works in aviation, logistics, business, finance and healthcare at a level where they would know say its got potential to be a DISASTER

jasjas1973 · 13/02/2019 22:24

Ford think they will pull out of UK, if no-deal, so for 13500 workers and the 10s of 1000s in the supply chain, it won't be the same at all.

All the brexitiers think they'll be an economic hit, so it depends if you've savings in order to hold out for the sunny uplands?

lonelyplanetmum · 13/02/2019 22:26

the 17m who discover that they were conned

Lots of the 17 million will never discover they've been conned.

Prices can rise, the NHS flounders further, pound declines even more, our economic ranking plummets, food bank use increases, wealth gap widens etc etc but there will never be an admission to leave vote was wrong. The decline will be pigeonholed as a recession or depression that would have happened anyway, or the nasty EUs fault for not giving us an unrestricted trade deal with no parameters at all because we are special.

If you are waiting for the ' you were right' moment it will be an eternal wait.

MrsSchadenfreude · 14/02/2019 04:33

Most of my extended family are rabid Brexiteers with no knowledge of the EU or its workings. They are all about taking back control etc etc. And they all say “Oh it will be fine when we leave” and don’t see any downsides at all.

My cousin’s husband lost his job as his company (which trades exclusively with the EU) has relocated to Germany and Poland. But he (predictably) blames the EU for this rather than Brexit.

Life for almost everyone will continue as if nothing has happened. Most wont even notice some price rises or inevitable changes.
Gradually as the X Factor style countdown tension fades into the past so will the awareness of Brexit in the public's consciousness.
Brexit will still be around of course but will become a tiresome daily political issue like any other.

TheoriginalLEM · 14/02/2019 05:27

Can somebody please explain to me why Brexit will lead to food shortages? I suffer with anxiety and thus far have managed to stick my head in the sand but i would be lying if i said i wasnt concerned.

lljkk · 14/02/2019 05:29

Scottish Fisherman right now on R5L talking about how the heck they are gonna sell their fish (to markets that want those fish) if no deal, all the paperwork they have to figure out, potential extra costs.

Brexit already is a tiresome daily political issue! Even if we get WA by 29.3.19 & a good transition & a good FTA with EU, will be a tiresome political issue for at least 2.5 hrs to come. "The People" voted for all this. Take responsibility (dammit).

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 05:47

@TheoriginalLEM , if we leave without a deal, we do not get a transition period. Our food supply and distribution system relies on the Just In Time method where there is no major warehousing. Stuff gets ordered and moved around as it is needed. A majority of food (not all) is imported from overseas and most of that from the EU. If there is no clear customs and tariffs charge set up, this will cause delays at the ports. Any delay anywhere in the Just In Time system, be that snow or this, slows deliveries to shops. Shops generally only have about 3 days worth of stuff. At most

Mmmmbrekkie · 14/02/2019 05:49

@windowWAG

100% agree
For the massive massive majority, much to the disappointment of the preppers, very little change.

lovelyupnorth · 14/02/2019 05:53

No can’t see any upsifes to Brexit.

TheoriginalLEM · 14/02/2019 05:54

Bellini thankyou for that answer. Probably will stock up on some bits.

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 06:08

@TheoriginalLEM , just get what you actually eat, what you can afford and what you can store. I've been recommending 3 days (I'm a prepper). No one can create an indefinite stash of food. Three days is generally doable but if you can do it incrementally rather than in a big hit, that would be better. Only do more if you are comfortable with that but do try to if you can.
The aim is to just keep you away from the shops if you don't need to be there until you are clearer about your local situation.
Don't forget breakfast stuff. Don't forget treats to cheer you up. Don't forget pets, if you have them. If you have kids and do Easter Eggs, maybe sneak them in. Make sure you have things like toothpaste and bog roll - I always find myself short of these if I am not careful.
I'm sorry you are struggling with anxiety. I hope getting a 3 day buffer helps.
Don't tell everyone you are doing it simply because they should take care of themselves and not consider you as their fallback store.

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 06:22

@Mmmmbrekkie , you seriously think people will be disappointed if it goes smoothly? Really?
That's like saying, "I hope I have a crash so my car insurance will be worth it".
I'm a general prepper. I would love it to go smoothly.

Helmetbymidnight · 14/02/2019 08:00

yes, there are people on my fb right now who believe things will be better after a no deal brexit. Confused

they think concerns are scare-mongering.

surferjet · 14/02/2019 08:07

I‘m certain some remainers will be bitterly disappointed if brexit goes well.
They won’t be able to carry on moaning.

Omgineedanamechange · 14/02/2019 08:24

Sigh, here we go again. No of course it won’t be the same, that’s the entire point of leaving. There will be some shortages, and price rises, but the apocalyptic collapse of civilisation predicted on here will not come to pass. And before anyone starts, I’m a remainer, that works in the food industry, and our particular product is fresh fruit that is 100% imported. It will not be rotting in trucks, I can assure you of that. Nor will the business be collapsing, or transferring abroad. On the contrary, we’re expanding our uk operations and have increased our permanent work force by around 10% to prepare for the expected drop in availability of casual workers.

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 08:24

Cuts both ways @surferjet

bellinisurge · 14/02/2019 08:28

Who is predicting the collapse of civilisation ffs. Interesting you think I should trust you rather than, say, the MoD, the CBI, the food industry, car manufacturers.

Omgineedanamechange · 14/02/2019 08:37

Absolutely non bellinisurge. Believe what you like, I certainly do. Like I said, I’m a remainer, but one with a great deal of insight into one tiny part of the food industry. I very much doubt we’re the only company that do what we do to stop our product rotting during transfer. Or that have a vested interest, i. e. cheap labour, in staying in the eu.
