Westministenders: A Special Place in Hell

A quick start to a new thread (as I've not been paying attention this evening!).

May is looking to ditch the Malthouse Compromise. Cos its so rubbish.

The ERG look like they are splitting over it anyway.

Up to sixty Labour MPs could back the WA.

Half the ERG plus Labour Leave Rebels could be enough to get the WA over the line.

Donald Tusk, makes controversial comment by more or less stating the obvious.

Comparisons with Venezuela, Yugoslavia etc aren't really valid imo, because the UK has had centuries of being a stable democracy and a comparatively rich one

Sorry, BigChocFrenzy you have mentioned that you haven't lived here for a while? Much of what is happening on a daily basis here may be passing those living in continental Europe by. Living here, many of us are finding it hard to believe it is actually happening, although these threads provide a great resource on what's actually gone on.

Things are already very compromised. The situation is already extremely dangerous for a range of reasons. I wish it weren't so, but it is.

Remember exactly the same arguments were used in 1930s Germany, including in England, and we didn't have mass SM ready to be used by hostile actors against us. And to track us.

Crash out is being played out. It is being and will be used to put into practice substantial and irreversible political changes.

Many ordinary Germans said that "it can't happen here, we are German." too.

I will watch that later DGRosetti thank you.

Did you see this press conference?

(I can find it no where on the British media.)

twitter.com/LiveInUKLoveEU/status/1094160689579679745

Mary Lou Mac Donald of Sinn Fein says:

"The prime minister has come here with empty rhetoric, with no plan and frankly, no honour.....
I told her that the days of her dictating to the Irish People are over.
She has acted with her eyes wide open in absolute bad faith."

"I regard the position adopted my Mrs May and her Government as one of hostility to Irish Interests.

In the event of a crash......a tory crash......the backstop of last resort is a referendum on Irish Unity."

6 Sundays left.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2019 14:47

Yup, plan now, but dump him right after brexit day

The Mail are serialising his biography by an investigative reporter, apparently revealing the real aims that he and McDonnell have.
No surprise that Corbyn is very devious, deceitful and also totally disorganised & incompetent

Most interesting for me was his ex saying he never read a single book in all their marriage
and that she made a mistake before their marriage thinking he was bright:
he's actually very dim and poorly educated

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2019 14:49

McDonnell & Milne are using him. They are the brains

Jericho1 · 10/02/2019 14:49

@DavidHenigUK
Any Government strategy that suggests no clarity over Brexit until a week before exit day is to reach new heights of irresponsibility - businesses not knowing what their trading relations will be next week is the stuff of collapsing states like Venezuela.

We are on a slippery slope, this is how states fail. Not there yet, outside investors and other countries still expect us to be able to turn this round. But their confidence is decreasing, just read what they are saying. But will MPs act?

DGRossetti · 10/02/2019 15:03

Comparisons with Venezuela, Yugoslavia etc aren't really valid imo, because the UK has had centuries of being a stable democracy and a comparatively rich one

Hmm

Like all modern societies, we're one big power outage away from the stone age. (Or one small snowfall).

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2019 15:05

Jericho I keep up contacts with friends in the UK
and they say how they are surprised that nothing has changed because of the Brexit ref
Apparently noone talks about it and life has gone on completely unchanged, as far as they can tell
Except some higher prices

It must depend on which circles we move in, maybe whether friends are generally laid back, or worriers

(I'm neither: when it comes to problems, I plan as hard as I can, then move on and chill)

jasjas1973 · 10/02/2019 15:10

BCF i do not believe fcuking a word that vile rag the DM prints, their aim right now is to divert attention away from the disgraceful May/Tory party and to paint yet again that JC is Stalins evil love child.

People reading (& believing) that rag + other right wing tabloids is why we've got brexit.

So long as there are people like Chope & May in the Tory party then having a go at JC/Lab is pretty weak imo.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 10/02/2019 15:15

SHUTDOWN tensions. @SenShelby says talks are "stalled." @MickMulvaneyOMB says "absolutely cannot" rule out a shutdown at end of the week.
Senior Democratic aide says "talks have broken down"

Oops wrong thread Blush

RedToothBrush · 10/02/2019 15:18

Definitely depends on your social circle. I can't escape the subject and it's not me who raises it!

DGRossetti · 10/02/2019 15:23

@TheNorthWestPawsage

Or maybe just the right thread ...

The potential re-run of the shutdown chaos (I'm suspecting most UK observers thought it was all sorted ...) is another reason why no one in the world really gives a flying fuck about Brexit. Not sure if that works in anyones favour but it must push the UK and it's woes down peoples lists of things to give a shit about in the world.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 10/02/2019 15:23

Try to de-lather, Babooshka I'd be astonished if it gets as bad as your fears.

Thanks Bigchoc. I’m a natural born worrier I think so am aware I have the ability to catastrophise stuff in my head. But, as Mistigri says this is such an unprecedented event and even on this thread I keep reading apocalyptic predications of the country potentially ‘spiralling out of control.’ I keep telling myself to keep a sense of perspective but when people in power behave and talk in ways I could never have imagined just a short time ago it’s hard to know if your perspective is skewed or bang on.

I’m sleep deprived too atm so that doesn’t help. Time for 🍫🍫☕️☕️

This is from Mark Cunliffe #PeoplesVote #FBPE @monkey__mark

Since the UK voted to leave in 2016, the UK has:

  • announced plans for 3,500 troops on the street
  • is stockpiling medicines and food
  • increased it Brexit budget including no deal to £4bn
  • lost £500m a week in the economy

I can understand why someone would have been tempted to vote leave. Lots of my family did. What I can't get my head around is why they are not reconsidering given the ongoing damage and danger to Ireland.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2019 15:32

Oddly enough, since November especially, I have had quite a few conversations in Germany about Brexit.
Maybe it's just big chunks of the UK that have closed their eyes

It's very difficult to admit you've made a mistake that could screw up the country for decades
or that many people around you have done so.
Ignoring Brexit means being able to ignore those mistakes

Looking at Mumsnet - demographic youngish, educated - it should be flooded with Brexit threads

Littlespace · 10/02/2019 15:35

Stubborn British pride?

They can't admit to a mistake?

Who knows?

Littlespace · 10/02/2019 15:37

I also think Remain voters are just keeping their heads below the scary parapet and hoping it will all go away.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 10/02/2019 15:38

BidChoc I think everyone is feeling completely helpless. It's done more to make people feel disenchanted with politics than the Iraq war IMO. Everyone I spoke to on Friday was worried, but they weren't sure why or what for specifically. They went on to explain that because of this they chose not to talk about it - what on earth could they do?
That isn't a sign there won't be violence, or discord or chaos when things do start happening. It just means people are scared and don't want to look as though they are 'overthinking' or similar. The irony being that now is the time to plan, not pretend. For that very reason (that many people are still pretending) I think the likelihood of chaos/civil unrest goes up, not down.

PerverseConverse · 10/02/2019 15:39

Mum's friend doesn't see any problems. Mum pointed out where loo roll comes from and her friend just said they'd use newspaper instead Confused
The mind boggles.
I used to like her until she said there were "too many black people" on the royal wedding guest list HmmAngry

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2019 15:40

perverse Sad
Did she always make that kind of remark ?

greenelephantscarf · 10/02/2019 15:42

Looking at Mumsnet - demographic youngish, educated - it should be flooded with Brexit threads

yes, but

  • msm, especially bbc is shit at covering it
  • people are very busy with other things that rear their ugly heads (look at the threads in fwr)
  • other people have their heads in the sand in a lala-can't-hear-you kind of way
derxa · 10/02/2019 15:42

The country is in a state of paralysis.

SwedishEdith · 10/02/2019 15:43

Seen on Twitter warning but...this would be in the news if true, wouldn't it? I mean, you'd go straight to the press if this happened, no?

"Gvmnt already cancelled ppl’s booked trips as they’ve requisitioned ferries."

greenelephantscarf · 10/02/2019 15:43

oh and of couse bots certain posters insisting on burying threads in a topic.

PerverseConverse · 10/02/2019 15:45

Not that I'm aware of. I've only seen her a few times and she's never said anything untoward on those occasions. I've not seen her since mum mentioned it to me and I'm glad of it. Personally I'd have called her out and ended the friendship but my mum isn't one for taking a stand or acting on principles. She's not feisty like me (no red hair on her side of the family Grin).

SalrycLuxx · 10/02/2019 15:45

Gvmnt already cancelled ppl’s booked trips as they’ve requisitioned ferries."

It was in the press a week or two ago.
