Westministenders: A Special Place in Hell

A quick start to a new thread (as I've not been paying attention this evening!).

May is looking to ditch the Malthouse Compromise. Cos its so rubbish.

The ERG look like they are splitting over it anyway.

Up to sixty Labour MPs could back the WA.

Half the ERG plus Labour Leave Rebels could be enough to get the WA over the line.

Donald Tusk, makes controversial comment by more or less stating the obvious.

Key questions:

  • Can Remain Tories force May to relax to just a 1 or 2-line whip against the amendment ?
  • Would Corbyn allow Labour MPs a free vote, or even whip 1 or 2 line in favour ?

The amendment would rule out No Deal if passed
then a PV Remain vs WA, for which it is 99.9% certain the EU would grant sufficient extension

If the amendment is voted down, then the default is no Deal,
but that's the situation now anyway

The hope is that the WA combined with PV would bring in Remainers who previously voted against the WA alone
and would particularly tempt the big swathe of Labour Remainers to vote for it, what with PV being party policy after the NC vote failed.

The PV gives cover to MPs for whatever happens next, rather than having to take full responsibility themselves for deciding,
which most seem too chicken to do

This is the final chance for those wanting PV / Remain- and to rule out No Deal

If they don't stand up now and vote for this amendment, then it is too late

and we would be back to May pushing her WA again in late March, with no other choice except No Deal
If the WA has already failed twice to pass, No Deal would be the probability.

UK's rollover FTA with Faroe Islands

In case you wondered what Fox achieved by bravely bullying very weak / small countries .....

"an important trading partner for the UK" 😂

It is UK’s joint 192nd largest export market 😂 with exports of £ 3 million (yes millions, not billions)

and we currently have an annual trade surplus with them of < drum roll > £ 2 million !

This FTA does not cover services, but I doubt if there would be any potential or point to that

Brexit Broadcasting Cooperation at it again. We're doing fine!

LonelyandTiredandLow · 10/02/2019 08:05

BogChoc this clause made me laugh (how desperate!) and suspect will come back at some point in the future when our law changes are clearer:
^The interpretive mutatis mutandis principle applies to most references to
EU law so that, where appropriate, such references are to be read as references to
retained EU law or to EU law incorporated in the law of the territories for whose
international relations the UK is responsible when relevant EU law ceases to apply to the
UK, or legislation in the UK or the territories that replaces that legislation. This has avoided
the need to reproduce every page and has significantly reduced the volume of text that
needs to be agreed. ^

Corbyn couldn't whip an egg for an omelette (or aquafaba if he doesn't eat egg Grin). He has no credibility on that score given his own voting history. MPs will do what he wants if they agree and for no other reason.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2019 08:15

The problem for Labour MPs who displease Corbyn is not his strength of personality (!),
but that his cabal will try to deselect any they consider openly disloyal

bellinisurge · 10/02/2019 08:29

Even John Macdonald realised too many people would notice if Luciana Berger was pushed out. I heard him on Today - he was basically giving a message to the acolytes to back off. Let's hope more stupid shit like this gets noticed.
He was also, of course, threatening non-Corbynites with deselection if they think of creating a new party. Fair enough, I suppose, from his point of view. I feel that non- Corbynites should hold firm and take the party back. Somehow.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/02/2019 08:30

Anna Soubry MP@AnnaSoubry

We told the Govt weeks ago we would vote for PM’s WithdrawalAgreement on the basis it went back to the people @peoplesvoteuk w #Remain on the ballot paper

bellinisurge · 10/02/2019 08:35

48 days to go. Ferchrissakes.

frumpety · 10/02/2019 08:40

So let me get this straight , the idea mooted is ,if the WA passes , then there would be a new referendum during the extension period which the EU would need to grant, which asks the UK public if they want to Brexit the WA way or Remain ?

So no deal would be completely off the table ?

bellinisurge · 10/02/2019 08:43

This would appear to be the idea.
I personally would only support a PV if No Deal wasn't an option. Don't give people further opportunity to be idiots.

jasjas1973 · 10/02/2019 08:46

Under the Labour constitution, a vonc doesn't mean the MP is deselected.

What annoys me about all these posts criticising Labour and in particular the so called hard left in trying to deselect rebel MPs is you all conveniently forget that the Tory party is a far right organisation (anyone who poohooes that needs to read the AFD/FN/Tory manifestos and see if you can spot the difference) is in power and is actively trying to deselect MPs right now and is also attempting to get rid of the speaker in the HoC...in order to push through some awful legislation.... but of course all this is just swept under the carpet, in exactly the same way tory Islamophobia is too :(

Labour need to be held to account for their shoddy practices but the way the Tories are let off the hook on here, is sadly, just a reflection of what happens in the media.

BiglyBadgers · 10/02/2019 08:48

He was also, of course, threatening non-Corbynites with deselection if they think of creating a new party. Fair enough, I suppose, from his point of view.

I think most political parties have rules about not being surporters if other parties while a member. This seems particularly important if you're an MP. Fine for a bit of discontented murbling, but if you're seriously starting to have talks about setting up an opposing political party to the one you claim to represent it's not surprising that the party might have some views on that.

PerverseConverse · 10/02/2019 08:49

Am starting to feel an acute sense of anxiety now rather than just a general sense of foreboding. I'm going to utilise my £20 off voucher from Waitrose to add to my stash. That might calm me slightly. It's the prospect of civil unrest that scares the shit out of me. I live in a nice area that's semi rural part way between Manchester and Sheffield. Manchester is a no go zone for me since the Arena bomb and memories of the 1996 IRA bomb were never far from my mind before the threat of a return to violence if the GFA is not upheld.
I wish there wasn't so much uncertainty. My brain doesn't cope well with uncertainty. I'm great in a crisis but uncertainty is horrendous.

bellinisurge · 10/02/2019 08:54

I'm sorry you don't want to visit wonderful Manchester.
I take some comfort in the army's "forward planning " and that they take this shit seriously.

PerverseConverse · 10/02/2019 09:08

Manchester is 30 mins away by train and I've just no interest in going. It scares me.

TheElementsSong · 10/02/2019 09:34

I saw there was yet another stockpiling thread in Chat... couldn't even be bothered to post on it.

Tanith · 10/02/2019 09:36

When Ed Milliband opened the floodgates to all and sundry, a significant number of Conservatives scrambled to join up. One was a local Council member, openly boasting about how he did it.

I don’t recall any disciplinary action against those Conservative party members.
Labour said they rooted out many of them; I wouldn’t be surprised if some are still members, simply because of the sheer numbers.

Destiel · 10/02/2019 09:44

I'm the same perverse

Give me a crisis and I'm fine.

But this?

This is just....scary.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 10/02/2019 09:52

At least we may get a chance to have someone slightly less incompetent in the final weeks? News of hopefully resigning Grayling.

Feeling slightly more reassured as 3 of my 4 friends who were over now have begun a small stockpile. Am also looking at the stockpiling thread. I think I have a little more than some but slightly less than others. My house guests have stayed another surprise night so it's taken my mind of it all a bit.

Weezol · 10/02/2019 09:58

I posted briefly on some prepper threads a while back.

I'm always mildly prepped. Live alone in the north, property is electricity only and I have a chronic medical condition. So, fixes for power cuts, bad weather or being housebound as standard also impending zombie apocalypse.

The friends who used to tease me and make comments about tin foil hats have been fairly quiet about my wee stashing habit in recent months.

Destiel · 10/02/2019 10:36

Tbh it's a habit I intend to keep.

I'm pretty cross with myself how unprepared for stuff we were.

If nothing else its taught me a lesson!

We should have a months worth of cash for food by end of March.

And I'll fill both cars with fuel.

prettybird · 10/02/2019 10:44

I usually run the car to empty before filling up drives dh mad Wink - but for the next few months I'm going to fill up when it gets to half full.

Also have a 5p a litre Tesco voucher that needs to be used by Wednesday Wink

Fortunately where I live I have access to 4 different railway lines (although they all go into the centre of Glasgow), buses and a dinky wee circular underground. Plus we cycle, so we can avoid using the car.

Huggybear16 · 10/02/2019 10:44

Agree @SquiddyMcSquidford with that it gives a glimmer of hope, but the hope is short lived as this government never seem to support sensible ideas. I think I'd like to see this happen. I also thought the 2016 referendum would go the other way - so what do I know?

Juells · 10/02/2019 10:53

Destiel
Tbh it's a habit I intend to keep.

Me too! I've never bothered with a store cupboard, but I'm really enjoying the stockpile that I have. When/if I use a tin of tomatoes or something from it, I replace instantly. It's a great feeling if security. Will keep the car topped up from now on as well.
