Brexit

Honestly - how likely is it now that Brexit will never happen?

There's just 57 days to go until we leave the EU.

Is there still a chance that Brexit will be stopped in some way, politicians will see sense, the whole thing will be called off and we will remain in the EU?

How likely is that to happen?

Don't worry, at this stage it's less than five percent of MPs, and even they are changing, because they also live here, and have families.

^ I agree with this. There are a number of MPs within parties and across parties that are now working together, which even 6 weeks ago I would never have said would happen.

I mean even Corby came out of a meeting with May reasonably ok and not trying to point score.

Notonthestairs · 31/01/2019 15:48

Does that 25% include non Eu food/produce that is shipped to Rotterdam and then forwarded on to the UK?

Or does it only include EU grown/manufactured/processed food?

Bluntness100 · 31/01/2019 15:48

Yes as it gets to the wire they are starting to pull together.

Another interesting fact i read, is that if we move to world trade terms we will be the only country in the whole world only trading on those terms. Every single other country has supplementary trade deals because the terms are so poor.

We would literally be the only country in the world who only has that.

Quite a shocking statistic.

icannotremember · 31/01/2019 15:59

The trade agreements we have with other countries, we have as an EU member. They do not carry across if we leave without a deal.

Bluntness100 · 31/01/2019 16:18

The trade agreements we have with other countries, we have as an EU member. They do not carry across if we leave without a deal.

Exactly, we trade on eu terms, on deals that have been negotiated over the last forty seven years, as soon as we leave, we cannot use those terms and need to renegotiate every single one, with only our own negotiating power, not that of 27 countries.

The wto terms are simply the base line to allow us to trade and survive, and as said, we would be the only country in thr world trading on only those terms.

ragged · 31/01/2019 16:23

A PV would not be on a "deal". A PV would be on a WA. We are MILEs away from any kind of deal.

Kazzyhoward

Successive politicians and governments over the past 20 years have led the country to where we are today because they didn't take heed of the growing discontent over the EU, loss of Sovereignty, immigration, etc. It was entirely foreseeable that at some future time, it would come to a head. Yet, successive politicians just ignored it, all the while playing their power games and lining their own pockets. The British people deserve far better politicians than the dross we've had to choose between for the past 20 years.

To some extent you are correct but you have failed to identify the real cause of the growing discontent which is the increasing economic inequality and lack of social mobility in the UK. Conveniently blamed on the EU, loss of sovereignty, and immigration by the press and media. Politicians have been happy to sit back and allow the media to manipulate public opinion in that way since it meant they weren't getting the blame for something which is 100% their own fault.

Mummmy2017

Most leavers want change and a better quality of life. We voted as nothing done in the last decades seems to have changed much.

See above. Unfortunately you were manipulated into thinking voting to leave the EU would bring about the change and better quality of life that is needed. It won't.

dimsum123 · 31/01/2019 16:56

Dontmakemeshushyou, thank you. Perfectly put.

Bluntness100 · 31/01/2019 16:58

Of course people voted leave hoping for a better quality of life, but I think its become very obvious there is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow and we will be worse off. It really is all about mitigatating it now as we are stranded on our own and try to mimic the negotiating weight of 27 countries,.

BrieAndOatcakes · 31/01/2019 17:05

I agree with those saying we will be worse off. If anything those neglected areas will be even more neglected when there's less tax revenue due to businesses moving elsewhere.

ragged · 31/01/2019 17:34

I thought many people voted leave b/c they had "Nothing To Lose". That's very far from a message of hope for the future.

mummmy2017 · 31/01/2019 18:57

When you have nothing to loose, and nothing changes, then someone offers you hope you take it.
Brexit means changes in this country, big changes . We want change... How hard is that to see. It is 100% better than the same old crap for ever and ever

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 31/01/2019 19:02

I wish it would stop but it looks more and more like it won’t. I just hope the Leavers feel proud of themselves when it all goes to shit and people suffer because of it.

mummmy2017 · 31/01/2019 19:05

When you say people suffer, what exactly do you mean?

Random18 · 31/01/2019 19:06

@mummy I am so glad you have hope.

If I believed everything that you do then I may have voted Leave too.

I’m a realist though. I didn’t believe Leave in 2017 and they have done nothing to convince me it’s going to be all OK.

For me too, the most scary thing is the politicians who are on the whole supporting Leave. It’s the Tories - the party of wealth and the party who have done more damage to this country since we joint the EEC / EU.

They have been restrained by us being a member of the E.U.

I am petrified if the more right wing element of the party get control.

Random18 · 31/01/2019 19:07

Should be 2016!

Yaralie · 31/01/2019 19:12

The right wing element of the Tory party, representing a minority of a minority, are in control and have been ever since TM first said "we must deliver brexit" Give them an inch, they take a mile.

Meanwhile the sane remainers (the majority of the population, as proven by all opinion polls over the last two years) are totally ignored.

BeardedMum · 31/01/2019 19:16

I despair when people say they voted for change and that things can not get worse. Yes it can get a lot worse especially for those who are already struggling.

BrieAndOatcakes · 31/01/2019 19:20

Nothing to lose? What about food supplies, medicine supplies, the industry we do have left, the benefits system, the NHS? Yes not all of these are perfect but they're not likely to improve after Brexit. What exactly will improve for people in deprived areas?

BrieAndOatcakes · 31/01/2019 19:21

(X post with BeardedMum)

Oblomov19 · 31/01/2019 19:31

Unlikely. I think it will happen. I wish it wouldn't. But I think it will.

mummmy2017 · 31/01/2019 19:33

Things were failing before the vote.
I have nothing
What comes in goes out before the end of every month... There is nothing left...
So yes me, I am one of the people you say about ..
Under remain nothing would change, list over 3,000 in cuts in last four years ..
So hell yes. Let's leave and force change.

TheWomanin12B · 31/01/2019 19:34

But you do know that change will be even worse than now? It really isn't going to be better for you.

BeardedMum · 31/01/2019 19:40

But honestly there will just be more and deeper cuts. Sure you can see that. Do you think the Tories are taking us out of the EU so they can spend more money on the poor? Excuse me, but 🤪😂

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 31/01/2019 19:41

It will be worse.

Recession will hit everybody and tax revenue will fall, so everybody will be worse off.
