Good morning brexiteers.

Well, we’re almost there ( although today will be interesting )
So if you’re not worried in the slightest about anything ( I’m not ) then jump into the pool of tranquility, & let the warm water of optimism & new beginnings wash over you.

Fully appreciate some remainers have real concerns, but in the interest of balance, plenty of us haven’t.

This thread is for us.

{ The EU now have a choice to make but I imagine they will drag it out for a while longer before we shake hands.}
Please stop playing the pathetic 'victim' on this. The EU have been waiting patiently for over 2 1/2 years for the UK to decide what it wants to do. The UK is STILL buggering around. It is not up to the EU to decide anything at all. There are ONLY 3 choices, Revoke, the WA or crash out with no deal.
The 'technical' aspects of the WA were thrashed out and checked for legality by ALL 28 countries last November. The fact that Mrs May has failed to put the plan to the UK government sufficiently well to get it ratified is HER problem, not that of the EU.
The EU doesn't want to walk away from this but it will not be blackmailed by a country that has no clue about where it wants to go.

Oh please. The EU have spent all that time refusing to agree a FTA. Had they done that we wouldn't need this backstop to guarantee a no deal. May is finally calling their bluff.

QueenieInFrance · 30/01/2019 15:51

Walking what do you think wouod have been in that FTA?
Genuinely, how wouod it look like?

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 15:52

Why do an FTA with a country whose legal situation is unclear?

QueenieInFrance · 30/01/2019 15:53

Can I also ask Leavers what sort if brexit they want?

FWIW i was a Remainer. I do not want the U.K. to stay in the EU anymore so for me, a WA is all good.
But I thought that most Leavers were against the WA because of the backstop etc...
So I’m wondering what Leavers wouod want/hope to achieve

Buteo · 30/01/2019 15:57

The EU have spent all that time refusing to agree a FTA

They really haven't - the EU made it quite clear that May's red lines meant that it was either a Canada or South Korea style FTA or nothing, but instead May wanted to cherry pick something bespoke.

The EU even made a handy diagram for May.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 30/01/2019 15:58

Fine with the WA as long as the backstop isn't permanent, otherwise the EU will just screw us over.

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 16:01

And you think the recent shenanigans show we can be trusted to keep our word over NI.

MrsTerryPratcett · 30/01/2019 16:02

Walking the delay, and ultimately the decision on who blinks first is based on who cares more about the citizens of the UK that live in NI, the EU or their own government. If the EU signs, it will be because they believe that parliament doesn't care about a return to a hard border on the island of Ireland. And they'd like to delay that temporarily with preventing no deal.

That will be a shameful moment for us. Not a victory.

MattFreisWeatherReport · 30/01/2019 16:04

I don't get why people are so obsessed with the 'back stop'.

Because, given that the government is propped up the DUP, who refuse to allow NI be treated differently from the rest of the UK, apart from all the respects in which they insist on it it's all that stands between the UK and a major breach of the Belfast Agreement, which is a legally binding international treaty. Quite important really.

I don't get why Leavers are so obsessed with wriggling out of it. Or why anyone imagines the EU is even in a position to negotiate over it. Or how you expect anyone to sign a treaty or agreement with the UK about anything ever again when you advocate such a cavalier attitude to the ones we've already committed ourselves to.

Sorry, am I being disagreeable?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 30/01/2019 16:12

Fine with the WA as long as the backstop isn't permanent, otherwise the EU will just screw us over.

The UK needs no help in screwing itself over. The EU have been consistent all along. Only one side is trying to meddle with an international treaty it is signed up to.

MrsTerryPratcett · 30/01/2019 16:29

I'd love to know how the bubbly, clam Leavers would sort NI. If they have a calming solutions, that doesn't involve violence or breaking international treaties, they should deffo tell TM.

BorisBogtrotter · 30/01/2019 16:48

"The EU have spent all that time refusing to agree a FTA."

You are misinformed. The UK have not agreed how they are going to leave and what the process of this is. Article 50 states explicitly that an FTA cannot be made with a country that is still part of the EU only once how leaving has been agreed can negotiations start as the relationship of the country as a third party is known. This was agreed to by the UK when they started negotiations.

Actually walkkingdead, this shows, among others, your massive ignorance regarding the process.

You just believe the bits you want to believe.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 30/01/2019 17:07

the decision on who blinks first is based on who cares more about the citizens of the UK that live in NI

Not at all, we have put our final offer on the table. If the EU don't want it then we leave with a no deal. All UK citizens (including from N.I.) will be cared for equally by the UK, regardless.

Not sure you can say the EU care that much about UK citizens in NI though, otherwise they wouldn't be trying to split them off from the rest of the UK.

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 17:14

And you think no deal is acceptable? Really? After all you now know?

mummmy2017 · 30/01/2019 17:19

The EU said no to an different deal.
They have just said they want us to pay into their budget even after we leave.
They want us to give up the fishing.
They want us to stay licked fingered n and just roll over pretend to leave...
Nope, let's face facts.. May can't get a deal, she is just treading water till time has run out, and she can just call no deal....
In all later question times, she will be able to blame everyone else.
Oh and remember the Millennium Bug that never was.... Brexit will be the same...

mummmy2017 · 30/01/2019 17:21

They want us to stay licked fingered n and just roll over pretend to leave...
Spell checker... Omg.
They want us to stay and just pretend to leave

Buteo · 30/01/2019 17:35

Oh and remember the Millennium Bug that never was....

Now where is the Brexit Bingo Caller when you need them?

1tisILeClerc · 30/01/2019 17:38

{Not at all, we have put our final offer on the table. If the EU don't want it then we leave with a no deal.}
WRONG
The UK is leaving the club, the EU owes the UK nothing.
The big problem is the crackpots in the UK thinking they can steal the furniture and the drinks cabinet on the way out.

Whatsnewwithyou · 30/01/2019 17:40

I would just like to know why...I am very willing to see benefits because I'm an optimistic person and want to see the good in this. I voted remain but i dont want to spend years of my life worrying about and being depressed about this and want to accept it. The possible benefits I have thought of are:

  1. House prices falling means more people will be able to get on the property ladder
  2. With fewer people competing for jobs they will have to pay more
  3. Scottish independence is now more likely (and my views on that are partly based on emotion so I do understand that aspect)

The first two depend on there still being jobs available though, which I'm not sure of at all. I think people like JRM support brexit to bring back the workhouse while simultaneously providing him and his family with tax breaks. BJ and Gove did it to further their careers never dreaming that leave would actually win. And Farage is just a nasty racist. But I think ordinary everyday leave voters must have other, better reasons than these people though and I'd honestly like to understand what they are.

I do think if we leave without a deal we're totally stuffed but if we get one it might not be so bad. That's what I hope anyway.

Whatsnewwithyou · 30/01/2019 17:42

My parents voted leave because of the bus, others must have had better reasons.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 30/01/2019 17:48

And you think no deal is acceptable? Really? After all you now know?
We have given the EU our best offer if they don't want it then yes no deal is acceptable.
Some people are get very het up just because they aren't getting their own way. Chill, its all good.

bellinisurge · 30/01/2019 17:55

Forgive me @Walkingdeadfangirl if I don't rely on you to keep my family fed.

CromeYello · 30/01/2019 17:56

I still think many Leavers voted that way as a protest vote. Eg if you are living on a 'sink estate' either in a low paid job or on benefits and everyone (government, BOE, various very wealthy people etc) is saying vote Remain, vote for the status quo, chances are you're going to rebel. If your situation in life is poor then its obvious. Even though it's nothing to do with the EU.
For an awful lot of people in this country whoever is in power is irrelevant as they are screwed over all the time. Their vote in normal elections is meaningless unless they live in a marginal.

And yes I know that they are the ones who are probably going to be hurt the most by no deal.

There is such a divide in the UK between the haves and have-nots. Brexit will exacerbate this and I am worried about the consequences.

Whatsnewwithyou · 30/01/2019 18:00

Agreed CromeYello with everything you've said...but in that case why not vote for Corbyn as a better choice of protest vote -
his very slogan is "For the many, not the few"!!!
