Westministenders: May dug a deep stinky hole and UK politics has tumbled in

May almost certainly won't resign even after this huge defeat.

She's survived umpteen other humiliating defeats.
Her record strongly suggests she'll cling on to office with broken fingernails until Brexit (or Revoke) happens

After the ERG failed to topple her last month, she can legally stay as Tory party leader at least until December.
Besides, would any of her likely successors as Tory Party leader - Leadsome, Boris, JRM, Gove - be any better ... or bring even worse horrors ?

Corbyn has called a No Confidence vote
NC debate to be held at 7pm today.

He'll lose, because the DUP and the ERG - who voted down her WA - have genuine Confidence in her, of course 🤔

The Labour Party conference agreed their policy would be to get a GE, but failing that to go for a PV.
However, Corbyns latest statement is still against a PV
Will he finally give in, or try to out-stubborn May ?

The HoC doesn't want No Deal - but can't yet agree what they do want.
if they and / or May don't specifically choose something else, then No Deal is what automatically happens

May had told the cabinet she'd just keep pushing the WA, but it's now a dead parrot of a WA.

So she's "reaching out" to the other parties whom she's rudely rejected for the last 2.5 years
Maybe ongoing cross-party talks will ignore her and succeed on agreeing a new approach
BUT
The EU have said they will only renegotiate if the UK drops some of its red lines
Otherwise it's either this unchange WA or No Deal

Many analysts think this impasse means that May will have to ask the EU for an A50 extension.
She keeps saying she won't delay Brexit - but after she became PM she kept denying she'd hold a GE, right up until she announced it.

EU officials have hinted they would extend until the end of June.
However, an extension would have to be unanimously approved.
Would any of the 27 countries veto, in exasperation with the UK's ridiculous performance the last 2 years ?

I know on Westministenders we're all exasperated with it !

I first head the term tinpot dictatorship on Yes Minister back in the early 80s, when I was young.

BiglyBadgers · 16/01/2019 19:46

Beginning to think the options are No Deal or splitting up the Tories. Country or party - which will she destroy?

Country...May will always choose to save the party and I really don't think she is capable of changing her spots now.

She's doing what she sees as her best to deliver a tolerable leave.
Taking very few if any other views into account. She has tried to force her vision through against the law, against parliament and yes her party may have voted for her tonight but that’s less an endorsement of her and what’s she doing and more a point against JC.

These are strange times indeed.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/01/2019 19:47

The house may have voted it’s confidence in her but 117 of those votes didn’t have confidence in her last month. And the only thing she’s achieved since then is a record loss on the only major piece of legislation she’s put forward in the last 2 years.

The idea that the house actually has confidence in her is ludicrous.

MissMalice · 16/01/2019 19:50

My anger with the Tory party isn’t helped by my own MP flip flopping between telling his constituents the WA is the best option, then managed no deal is the best way forward, then voting for the WA. Too much party before country for my liking. I don’t care for any of the parties. I do care for the country.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 16/01/2019 19:50

52%! That’s a funny coincidence

PestymcPestFace · 16/01/2019 19:50

FPTP gives us alternating dictatorship. It needs reform. Tin-pot, unfortunately that is probably appropriate.

Melanie A border poll is probably one of the few reasons the EU would grant an extension. Arlene Foster will get a nobel peace prize for her role in the reunification of Ireland.

PestymcPestFace · 16/01/2019 19:52

I had a flip flop MP also MissM may or may not be the same one. He is being hounded on social media for not voting against her deal as the only true Brexit is no deal.

The genie is well and truly out of the bottle.

MissMalice · 16/01/2019 19:55

Peston confirms May would have lost the vote if DUP didn’t vote for her. Money well spent. That’s not corrupt at all Hmm

WonderWoman2019 · 16/01/2019 19:58

Hi all. BCF Star for stepping up again (old girl but frequent name changer here). Unbelievable that we're over 2.5
years into these threads now Confused

DangermousesSidekick · 16/01/2019 19:58

Yes Nigel Dodds is reported as saying "the confidence and supply motion is built upon delivering Brexit on shared priorities, which for Northern Ireland is honouring the union and taking control of laws and borders. He says he hopes that in the next few days they can work together to achieve that ambition."
Just to reinforce their importance to the PM.

Melanie
Ach, I'm a Norn Irn prod with heartfelt republican leanings

Just remember how astoshingly biased these threads are.

They are so pro Labour anyone would think it’s them posting in disguise^

Believe me, my feelings have nothing at all to do with anyone’s party affiliations. They are entirely my own - and I’ve read plenty of other threads on a number of sites.

Frankly, I’m a floating voter. I tend to vote for whichever party I feel is least likely to fuck up the country. As things stand, come the next general election, that’s me totally buggered.

sunglasses123 · 16/01/2019 20:08

I agree re the pro Labour fans. I really dread Corbyn being in charge. Abbott and Macdonnell?

Does anyone honestly think they could do better?

BiglyBadgers · 16/01/2019 20:08

Lucas and Cable are already pushing hard on Corbyn to follow this no-confidence vote with a call for a PV. I think whether or not Corbyn goes for a PV is now the next significant moment in Brexit. I'm really not sure which way he will go. I know he doesn't want one personally, but almost all of the rest of labour does including momentum I believe, so I think there is a chance he might not have much of a choice in the matter.

derxa · 16/01/2019 20:09

Remainer here who does not think May is a tinpot dictator. This situation is fucked up. She's trying to get through a decision that allows is to leave on tolerable terms. It was rejected. She's doing what she sees as her best to deliver a tolerable leave. Rather her than some ERG headbanger at No 10. Agree

bellinisurge · 16/01/2019 20:09

The last thing I am is Labour biased. Corbyn is a useless fucking twat. Hope that helps.

BiglyBadgers · 16/01/2019 20:10

They are so pro Labour anyone would think it’s them posting in disguise

I'm probably the biggest Corbyn supporter on these threads and I voted Lib Dem.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/01/2019 20:10

Just to explain the post that puzzled you, DG:
Some Leavers say they want to leave because the EU is corrupt / disfunctional, but then as evidence they cite reports that Junckers allegedly has a drink problem, or because another EU bod allegedly had a couple of affairs 🤔

Corbyn is just a protestor. No ideas himself apart from trashing everyone else’s.

He will literally bankrupt the UK. We have very low unemployment, we have mortgage rates at a very low rate. Just think what Labour could do with this?

PestymcPestFace · 16/01/2019 20:15

Another floating voter here Lucy

BigChocFrenzy · 16/01/2019 20:16

Almost all posts about Corbyn are criticising him
and saying how hopeless Lablour are as an opposition.

Anyone who thinks these threads are pro-Labour isn't reading what the rest of us are

Hint: saying how crap this Tory govt are doesn't mean anyone thinks Labour are doing a good job
They have both been absolute crap

The worst govt and the worst Opposition in maybe the last 200 years
Of course we criticise the govt more, because they are the ones in charge, the ones actually responsible for this clusterfuck !

Tom Harwood @tomhfh
So...
• PM asked Corbyn to come to talks tonight
• Corbyn refused unless no deal taken off table
• PM refuses to take no deal off table
• PM still keen for Corbyn to come to talks tonight.
• Corbyn's lead spox says "that's not going to happen."
• PM however aims to meet variety of Westminster figures (leaders of parties as well as factions of parties) tonight and over the coming days...
and all the while, Tories are steaming towards being on an election footing, set to have all seats with selected candidates by the end of the month...

I'm amazed they haven't already got their house in order on candidates.
