Westministenders: May dug a deep stinky hole and UK politics has tumbled in

May almost certainly won't resign even after this huge defeat.

She's survived umpteen other humiliating defeats.
Her record strongly suggests she'll cling on to office with broken fingernails until Brexit (or Revoke) happens

After the ERG failed to topple her last month, she can legally stay as Tory party leader at least until December.
Besides, would any of her likely successors as Tory Party leader - Leadsome, Boris, JRM, Gove - be any better ... or bring even worse horrors ?

Corbyn has called a No Confidence vote
NC debate to be held at 7pm today.

He'll lose, because the DUP and the ERG - who voted down her WA - have genuine Confidence in her, of course 🤔

The Labour Party conference agreed their policy would be to get a GE, but failing that to go for a PV.
However, Corbyns latest statement is still against a PV
Will he finally give in, or try to out-stubborn May ?

The HoC doesn't want No Deal - but can't yet agree what they do want.
if they and / or May don't specifically choose something else, then No Deal is what automatically happens

May had told the cabinet she'd just keep pushing the WA, but it's now a dead parrot of a WA.

So she's "reaching out" to the other parties whom she's rudely rejected for the last 2.5 years
Maybe ongoing cross-party talks will ignore her and succeed on agreeing a new approach
BUT
The EU have said they will only renegotiate if the UK drops some of its red lines
Otherwise it's either this unchange WA or No Deal

Many analysts think this impasse means that May will have to ask the EU for an A50 extension.
She keeps saying she won't delay Brexit - but after she became PM she kept denying she'd hold a GE, right up until she announced it.

EU officials have hinted they would extend until the end of June.
However, an extension would have to be unanimously approved.
Would any of the 27 countries veto, in exasperation with the UK's ridiculous performance the last 2 years ?

I know on Westministenders we're all exasperated with it !

God help us let's fucking go WT fucking O.
Kate Hoey has lost what little credibility she has by sharing a platform with those turds for this.

1tisILeClerc · 17/01/2019 17:08

. {She can't possibly come back with this WA as her plan B and expect to be treated seriously.}
Unless it is something VERY similar to the WA the EU won't wear it.

Wow Loletta - that was awesome! Thanks for the link!

Kate Hoey lost touch with credibility many moons ago.

I found it hard to focus on work his week, and am also getting jealous of those with heads in the sand. At 3AM DH and I realised neither of us could sleep for the stress of what’s going on politically and what we then need to do to try to mitigate stuff for our family.
So now we’ve got MIL in the house and are about to knacker ourselves on a long run, and then head out for some R&R. Don’t mean to sound like anyone’s Mum but remember to find ways to protect your mental health and well-being, everyone.
Easier said than done for those who are also at a stressful time in their personal lives (Susan Flowers), I know, but even a long bath and a decent novel from the library to get away from it for a bit helps me when everything got too much.

EU trolling or just buying time to sort out a no deal

The PV is not a vote on behalf of the EU. It is a mechanism by which the UK can democratically' chose between one of only 3 items on the EU's list, No deal, WA or Revoke.
The EU have said repeatedly (as we all know on this thread) that it is the WA with MAYBE a slight shaving the odd bit here or there. No more rewrites.

DGRossetti · 17/01/2019 17:24

EU trolling or just buying time to sort out a no deal

I'd say neither. It's a statement of fact, but it's (annoyingly) pre-empting any suggestion from Theresa May that "there's no point considering an extension because the EU have indicated they wouldn't grant it."

It's also a clear signal to the world that they're already resigned to no deal.

As the UK leaves with no deal, it's going to face that world, and it's observers who have seen how poor we are at negotiating.

DGRossetti · 17/01/2019 17:27

The PV is not a vote on behalf of the EU. It is a mechanism by which the UK can democratically' chose between one of only 3 items on the EU's list, No deal, WA or Revoke.

Everyone keeps saying no-deal can be an option. I'm still of the mind that if a PV were to be called, it could not produce an outcome which would involve the UK breaking the GFA - which no deal would. It would be like holding a referendum with "re occupy Ireland" on it.

And we return to what would the rest of the world make of a UK that is quite happy to offload unlawful and possibly illegal decisions onto it's demonstrably ill-informed electorate ? That's the sort of thing tinpot dictatorships might do to justify a war.

{Whitehall is being so secretive that information is only being provided to some firms orally, or via hard copies of documents that must be returned at the end of meetings.}

Open government anyone?

New - Prime minister writes to Corbyn again urging him to meet, saying she would be "happy to discuss" Labour's proposals and saying it is wrong for him to not allow his MPs to meet her

'we have a responsibility not to simply say what we want, but also to explain how we can achieve it.'
Grin
How does she have the nerve?

Shambu · 17/01/2019 17:36

The longer this shit keeps up the greater chance of revoke.

There are really only two options now: alternative deal that EU will accept - which is CU or CU + SM or revoke.

DGRossetti · 17/01/2019 17:36

She can't even get her facts straight.

nothing about revoking A50 makes the UKs membership of the EU "permanent".

Please tell me she isn't the brightest and the best we have ?

1tisILeClerc · 17/01/2019 17:42

{There are really only two options now: alternative deal that EU will accept - which is CU or CU + SM or revoke.}
Unless there is a 'secret' alternative plan that the EU have in their safe that the EU has already 'pre signed' that TM has been party to there is not sufficient time to redo the existing WA.

Shambu · 17/01/2019 17:43

Xpost - May's letter sounds like a pretty headmistress.

Shambu · 17/01/2019 17:47

prissy not pretty!!!!

QueenieIsLost · 17/01/2019 17:47

It's also a clear signal to the world that they're already resigned to no deal.

I agree. France has also said they are now implementing preparation for a no deal.
Unfortunately, the EU has been pretty good at analysing what’s going on :(

The realisation that things were really crap from MPs has come too late imo.
And yes the UK shouod be rioting too. But 1- it’s not british and 2- it still feel that it’s not an ok to do because ‘its Undemocratic and against the will of the people’
Actually the U.K. shouod have been rioting a long time ago. A government that is held in contempt of parliament isn’t fit for purpose and shouldn’t be in charge of the most important négociation in a generation (and more)

Charly22 · 17/01/2019 17:48

Hi everyone, been lurking for a while.

I am a German national who also has British Citizenship (acquired in 2004), married to a Brit (half Scottish, half Irish), living in Scotland.

We only moved back to the UK five years ago.

I have a long history of depression and am currently feeling very anxious and panicky about the whole situation.

Not working and having a lot of time on my hands doesn’t help.

QueenieIsLost · 17/01/2019 17:50

Revoking wouod be good in the very short term.
It will be crap in the medium and the long term. For the U.K. and the EU.
I know that the EU has no choice in that, but seen the way the uk has behaved in the recent years, i wouldn’t want them. It’s too destructive atm and wouod just use that opportunity to create mayhem (like it is atm by supporting Poland and Hungary populist movement - the only country to do so....)

QueenieIsLost · 17/01/2019 17:52

Charly i feel for you. Similar here bar the fact I dint have the protection of the British citizenship.
I’ve resigned myself that I will have no choice but to leave the U.K. at some point. It’s not home anymore anyway.
I’m just hoping I can do so wo it being too disruptive for my two teens (worse time for them exams wise).

Charly22 · 17/01/2019 17:53

I have started ‘prepping’ a bit. Thank you bellinisurge Flowers
