Brexit

Westministenders: May dug a deep stinky hole and UK politics has tumbled in

May almost certainly won't resign even after this huge defeat.

She's survived umpteen other humiliating defeats.
Her record strongly suggests she'll cling on to office with broken fingernails until Brexit (or Revoke) happens

After the ERG failed to topple her last month, she can legally stay as Tory party leader at least until December.
Besides, would any of her likely successors as Tory Party leader - Leadsome, Boris, JRM, Gove - be any better ... or bring even worse horrors ?

Corbyn has called a No Confidence vote
NC debate to be held at 7pm today.

He'll lose, because the DUP and the ERG - who voted down her WA - have genuine Confidence in her, of course 🤔

The Labour Party conference agreed their policy would be to get a GE, but failing that to go for a PV.
However, Corbyns latest statement is still against a PV
Will he finally give in, or try to out-stubborn May ?

The HoC doesn't want No Deal - but can't yet agree what they do want.
if they and / or May don't specifically choose something else, then No Deal is what automatically happens

May had told the cabinet she'd just keep pushing the WA, but it's now a dead parrot of a WA.

So she's "reaching out" to the other parties whom she's rudely rejected for the last 2.5 years
Maybe ongoing cross-party talks will ignore her and succeed on agreeing a new approach
BUT
The EU have said they will only renegotiate if the UK drops some of its red lines
Otherwise it's either this unchange WA or No Deal

Many analysts think this impasse means that May will have to ask the EU for an A50 extension.
She keeps saying she won't delay Brexit - but after she became PM she kept denying she'd hold a GE, right up until she announced it.

EU officials have hinted they would extend until the end of June.
However, an extension would have to be unanimously approved.
Would any of the 27 countries veto, in exasperation with the UK's ridiculous performance the last 2 years ?

I know on Westministenders we're all exasperated with it !

I thought that too 1tis.

I think Anna Soubry has she would vote against the govt if we get too close to 29 March and No deal is looking likely.

derxa · 16/01/2019 21:00

In her Christmas message the Queen gave a coded message to the country to get this bloody mess sorted out. Perhaps she could take over negotiations.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/01/2019 21:02

Yes, LeClerc May & the Brexiter shenanigans have poisoned the EFTA well and we are the toxic country noone wants to be married to (except the EU would have us back)

Hence why we have to go to my 3rd pillar proposal.

Not mine, tbh - I think I copied it off veteran Lave campaigner R North !

May giving a statement at 10pm, what's she saying?

Somerville · 16/01/2019 21:05

Doesn’t your queen speak fluent French too?

More of the same, Tokyo

BigChocFrenzy · 16/01/2019 21:06

Reaminers & soft leavers alike would be mightily pissed with Corbyn, Cable and NS if they all refuse to join cross-party talks
... and then we get the automatic No Deal when time rus out

Ok, if May says she won't drop her red lines, those talks won't be long !
but in that case, the other party leaders would have shown they tried
and the pressure will be on May to drop'em

Apologies, I've just reported my picture, I didn't crop it well enough!

BigChocFrenzy · 16/01/2019 21:07

She speaks at least reasonable French, in a v Brit accent
She always speaks fluent "adult"

Charles speaks good German, according to the late Lord Mountbatten

Doesn’t your queen speak fluent French too? I believe she does.
How are you m'dear?

Somerville · 16/01/2019 21:07

This “I won’t talk unless...” thing pisses me off. Talking is good. Have the talk, say your red lines there. Don’t refuse to talk.

BiglyBadgers · 16/01/2019 21:08

May giving a statement at 10pm, what's she saying?

the same things she always says would be my guess. Blah, blah, blah...will of the people...what the people voted for....blah blah...maybe add something in about the opposition leader not working with her to enact the will of the people, though that would be a change and I'm not sure she is ready for a new script quite yet.

TokyoSushi · 16/01/2019 21:08

I was going to go to bed early, now I'll have to wait up to see...

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/01/2019 21:09

I think it’s Monday Talk, not Friday.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/01/2019 21:09

Anyway, our problems during the negotiations were never language - just some reported bad language and some nationalistic rants by DD & Raab, to show they are "well 'ard"
Didn't go down well

OP posts:
Somerville · 16/01/2019 21:09

I really might throw things at the TV if she sticks to the script, still, at this point. I knew she was stubborn and not-clever-enough but I now believe she is delusional too.

IrenetheQuaint · 16/01/2019 21:09

"May giving a statement at 10pm, what's she saying?"

Almost certainly what she's said 99 times before... (but I suppose one can live in hope)

MarshaBradyo · 16/01/2019 21:10

She doesn’t say anything

They are both hopeless

Hopefully they’ll be something of note at 10

Hazardswan · 16/01/2019 21:11

I've wanted more SNP and NS for ages! I'm in England but I'd consider voting SNP if I could.

Holidayshopping · 16/01/2019 21:11

I expect she will ‘be absolutely clear’ about lots of things

Strong and stable
Brexit means Brexit
Nothing has changed
Will of the people

Repeat to fade.

Just sick of it now.

derxa · 16/01/2019 21:13

This really is playground behaviour now. We're not talking to you na na na na na. I despair. Teresa is a dry old stick with not many people skills but if she and Corbyn could actually sit down together and have a cordial discussion then it could only be beneficial.

BiglyBadgers · 16/01/2019 21:13

^Ok, if May says she won't drop her red lines, those talks won't be long !
but in that case, the other party leaders would have shown they tried
and the pressure will be on May to drop'em^

But this is basically what has happened. She said she wants to talk, they said they are going to demand a change to red lines, she said no so what more is there to talk about. Those talks have occurred but openly and transparently rather than behind closed doors where tories can then just lie about what was said as they have been known to do repeatedly in the negotiations about Brexit.

Walking into a room with May under the guise of "talks" when she has made it clear there is no compromise to be had is just foolish. They would just walk out covered in tory shit and that stuff is hard to wash off, just ask Clegg.

1tisILeClerc · 16/01/2019 21:15

Corbyn managed 'absolutely clear' in his speech I think, either that or he was reading a bus timetable, difficult to say.
