JustAnotherPoster Perhaps you could google for me? I'm too thick.

I think it is extremely unhelpful to automatically label concerns about immigration as racist.
Gordon Brown didn't help matters with 'Bigotgate.'

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2019 07:42

“Gordon Brown didn't help matters with 'Bigotgate.'”

Blimey! How long ago was that?

TheNumberfaker · 16/01/2019 07:46

Why did 2/3 vote NO?
Labour - official party line as it doesn’t meet their 6 tests
Libdems - they want to put the deal back to the people to decide, because they know that leaving the EU will send the UK into depression/recession
SNP, Green - same as LibDem
DUP & Tory ERG - they hate the backstop and want no deal
Tory ‘rebels’ - recognise that this deal means the UK has Less sovereignty than our current position in the EU

The irony is though, wotev that if the construction workers get their Brexit then things will be even worse when the economy nosedives.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 16/01/2019 07:53

Also, there still will be immigration, only from different places.

Wotev · 16/01/2019 07:54

TheNumberFaker. That post is helpful. Can I ask what is Tory ERG?

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2019 07:56

Wotev. Have you been in a hospital recently?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/01/2019 07:58

OMG the great Oyster card scam! I see students that too. And scallys.

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2019 07:59

ERG-European Research Group. Jacob Rees-Mogg’s gang.

TheNavigator · 16/01/2019 08:00

If anyone wants to know why so many people voted Leave, they should watch Brexit - The Uncivil War.

Well, the BBC was in Stoke, which voted by the largest margin in the country to leave, interviewing people. An elderly man hobbled up the mike and, no introduction, said 'I don't like the French'. You can't really argue with that, can you Sad

Frouby · 16/01/2019 08:00

I do agree with some of your points wotev. I am a reluctant remainer and actually, I don't think leave wouod be the end of the world, or even the UK.

And you are right it is difficult for leave voters to express reasons and arguements for brexit.

But don't make sweeping statements unless you can back them up. You said '100% of construction workers voted leave'. I gave examples of construction workers who hadn't. You then said 'it's different down south'. I know construction workers down south. When the referendum happened we were on a job in London. It absolutely wasn't the case that 100% voted leave, for the same reasons my dh didn't vote leave.

I would love to see more reasoned debate between leavers and remainers in here, but it doesn't happen because some leavers don't fully research their 'facts'. Make a glaring mistake that is easily disproved and makes any valid arguements seem ridiculous.

Wotev · 16/01/2019 08:01

I have no objection to immigration for skilled people. Nurses/doctors/QS/architects/IT profs etc. My objection is the free for all that currently exists. As a Brit, you won't get a VISA for Canada/USA/Australia/NZ unless you've got a degree and/or are going to a skilled job where they can't recruit you from their own resources and an employer is willing to sponsor you.
Here in London, every cock-o-the-walk is here. You have people from outside the EU here on EU passports because they have parentage from EU countries. (The two brothers who used the one Oyster card being a case in point - Moldovan but got Romanian passports through grandparents).

Wotev · 16/01/2019 08:03

I should correct what I posted. 100% of people in construction THAT I KNOW voted to leave.

KennDodd · 16/01/2019 08:04

@wotev

You cant find a builder for love nor money were I live. I wanted an extension, we've given up because we just cant find anybody to do it. We're just getting a new kitchen now, finally found somebody who can do it before June (been looking since October). And they all charge a fortune. Its the same with plumbers and electricians.

Wotev · 16/01/2019 08:05

BertrandRussell - have you been on a building site recently?

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2019 08:07

“100% of people in construction THAT I KNOW voted to leave.”
Of course they did.
Pushing 100% of the people THAT I KNOW voted to remain. Despite the fact that a lot of people in my demographic voted leave.

Wotev · 16/01/2019 08:07

I'll find you a builder no bother. But builders are taking on commercial jobs rather than residential. Residential is a lot of hassle and pays shit. That's not a manpower issue.

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2019 08:08

“BertrandRussell - have you been on a building site recently?”

No.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 16/01/2019 08:08

There is some thruth in what you are saying, Wotev.

There are hard working immigrants who make a point of not receiving any benefits and there are criminals as well.

Some trades have been affected by new workers happy to work for less money. I know I have been.

But staying in the EU is much bigger than that.

Wotev · 16/01/2019 08:08

I don't know what your point is Bertrand? The jury is out on this one. 52% voted to leave.

Wotev · 16/01/2019 08:10

I'm just talking about the reasons discussed by the building trade. My own personal reasons for voting to leave were based on crime. Namely 2 rapes, 2 assaults, 2 thefts.

BertrandRussell · 16/01/2019 08:12

“My own personal reasons for voting to leave were based on crime. Namely 2 rapes, 2 assaults, 2 thefts.”

Ah. I’m out. Just a thought-you may not be helping your case here.
