Westministenders: Teetering on the edge

12 weeks to go.

There is rising confidence in the Extreme Brexiteer camp as well as open comments about how they can deliberately force through No Deal. Remember No Deal is the default. Every political crisis that takes up time makes no deal more likely and the ERG can just be obstructive to facilitate a political crisis. Parliament DO NOT have the ultimate power to stop Brexit - unless the government effectively allow an option to do so. And there is no sign May will let this ever happen. No Deal takes us back to pre-industrial revolution Britain in many social and economic ways. Which will please Jacob Rees-Mogg no end.

No Deal prep is now costing us a fortune - and is no where near sufficient in its scope. Won't someone think of all the extra that could have been put into the NHS.

Parliament returns next week. I hope you have enjoyed your Christmas break. What will happen in 2019 no one knows; the only certainity is turbulance and lurching from crisis to crisis. If we don't get hit by Brexit, maybe it will be the US shutdown crisis or the collaspe in the Chinese economy that will get us. Economists are nervous and thats generally not a good thing for the average person on the street.

Time to get in the euros, stock up on the tomatoes, invest in books and otherwise batten down the hatches financially whilst we await the coming storm in the hope that the forecasters are as good as Michael Fish in 1987.

I cannot foresee power cuts

Especially as Brexit will come after the weather warms up so demand for heating will drop

We are supposed to have a bad late winter so could be snow in march.

{What do people think about electricity supplies in no deal Brexit?}
While there might be some occasional disruption the electricity would not be off for very long periods so phone charging would not be an issue. If electricity was off, mobiles probably wouldn't have signal anyway as I don't think the bases have backup supplies.
A solar charger might be 'fun' to have.
Regarding freezers, if there is any hint there might be cuts, fill the freezer as foll as possible with 'stuff'. Food would be good obviously but if hard pressed for cash plastic boxes or even bags of water. Once frozen they stop 'warm' air getting into the freezer when you open it, and they will retain the cold when you do open it. Fill up any space you make by eating things by putting more bags of water or more food if you have it.

Thanks for the new thread.
Picked up my prescription today - have tried to order early for the last year or so - and asked the pharmacist how the stockpiling was going.
His reply: “It’s going well.”

Weather wise, it's not looking that helpful at the moment, with going into February potentially looking pretty cold. Impossible to say whether it will be snowy yet.
It's quite a different set up from last years SSW that produced the beast from the east, so we can hope that it doesn't repeat.

Potatoes must be kept cool, in complete darkness and dry. There may well be certain varieties that keep well but hopefully someone else knows which.

1tisILeClerc · 05/01/2019 15:13

If you have a farm shop nearby it is worth asking them about which varieties and storage and getting them harvested at the right time may be important too.

Ta1kinPeace · 05/01/2019 15:17

Mrsr8
Potatoes are normally irrigated now so much softer (but bigger and heavier) than the old ones.
Mine are not irrigated so smaller.
They last till April in my clamp. (Desiree / Romano / Jelly)

If you want to grow your own, go to a Potato Day next spring and ask which varieties will work best in your location for your needs.

Mrsr8
If you do not have much space, go for a good "early maincrop" that you can harvest bit by bit from about June.
Jelly and Smile are my faves, but it depends on your soil.

Admittedly my veg garden is rather larger than most (100 feet by 25)

Mistigri · 05/01/2019 15:32

Michael Fish said there wasn't going to be a storm. So he was completely wrong.

Actually not true - he said there wasn't going to be a hurricane. Which was wrong, but not as wrong as if he'd said there wasn't going to be a storm at all.

Ta1kinPeace · 05/01/2019 15:40

Michael Fish also said it would hit France, not the UK
I lived in Dover at the time

Whatthefoxgoingon · 05/01/2019 15:44

How long did the last thread last?

Five days? Grin

I’m off to buy more tinned tomatoes now. Plum ones for me. Smile

Quietrebel · 05/01/2019 16:13

In 14 weeks it will be 1970

I'm watching a box set of Life on Mars for research purposes.

Ta1kinPeace · 05/01/2019 16:41

Can I put out a plea to all of the posters on these threads.

PLEASE do not go onto threads elsewhere and start hurling insults
It does not help.
it just annoys moderates
and entrenches the decided.
If those threads annoy you so much, hide them
and leave posting to those who get less angry.

We only have a matter of weeks to turn the ship around.
It has to be done with a firm grip on the side
not a headbutt to the prow

DGRossetti · 05/01/2019 16:49

PLEASE do not go onto threads elsewhere and start hurling insults

Well I for one am quite happy hurling insults here ... when deserved Grin

Anyway, I suspect a lot of "threads"elsewhere are simply intended to distract or dilute the forensic analysis going on in the Brexit forum.

If I ever were to do a PhD, I might use the Brexit debate to show how minimal investment in software can lead to a maximum effect in a large population.
