Brexit

Is it me or is no Brexit looking a whole lot more likely tonight?

If no deal is pretty much off the table following the parliamentary votes tonight then the choice is ‘shit deal’ or no Brexit.

It’s clear which Remainers would prefer but what about Leavers?

Leave means whatever you want it to mean. I see too many people arguing online that it means a no deal Brexit. No it doesn't.

Before the referendum I went to a legal seminar where several options were set out - Norway deal, Turkey deal, Switzerland deal, WTO. No deal wasn't mentioned, presumably nobody thought we'd be that stupid at that point.

There are lots of leavers out there who dislike the political union we have now but were happy with the Common Market as it was - so presumably a Turkey type customs union deal would suit them.

Switzerland is too complicated and the EU ruled that out.

WTO is an option but as has been pointed out on many occasions, only one country in the world functions purely on WTO rules and anyway there is more to cooperation with the EU than trade.

EEA keeps us close to the EU but is expensive and means we keep freedom of movement (though we do have control and can send people home after 3 months if they don't have a job - our choice not to at the moment).

Lots of options, lot of interpretations of "leave". Pros and cons to all (except no deal which has no pros at all).

I'm lukewarm on another referendum, I am not sure Remain would win, and it would also provide a precedent for another indyref in Scotland. Politicians got us into this, they can get us out.

DGRossetti · 05/12/2018 16:26

That probably wouldn't have been allowed as part of the initial referendum as it would have split votes and weighted in favour of one option so it is doubtful it would have got through the electoral comission.

Given the mess the choice the EC allowed through, I don't see their role as sacrosanct. And given we now know that he campaign funding was at very best questionable, I wonder what the point of the EC at all is ?

An alternative, given the advisory nature of the referendum, would have been for David Cameron to have said "Thanks for that. Duly noted. We'll come back to you when we've thoroughly researched the implications and have a plan so you can see what we're doing."

Ellie56 · 05/12/2018 18:39

David Cameron has so much to answer for. AngryNo wonder he seems to have gone underground.

BakedBeans47 · 06/12/2018 08:34

If leave are so sure they’d win again, what do they have to fear from a second ref?

It’s going to be nearly 3 years since the first one. We had the last general election only 2 years after the previous one and how people voted did change.

Deadbudgie · 06/12/2018 09:24

I’m actually thinking the whole deal was fucked up purposely and coincidentally the ECJ hearing a case saying we could withdraw our letter under art 50 unilaterally. The whole thing is a stitch up. Next parliament will reject the deal, somehow this will end in a GE with all parties promising to keep us in the EU, fucked up democracy. If that’s the case I will never vote again, what’s the point in a pseudo democracy. But one guarantee if that happens there will be civik unrest in this country like has never been seen before!

Get on with it then.

TheElementsSong · 06/12/2018 09:31

i Get on with it then.

Grin

I'm expecting 17.4 million rioters on the streets, else I won't be impressed by the People's conviction.

Tanith · 06/12/2018 09:53

“ If that’s the case I will never vote again”

Is that a threat or a promise? Smile

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/12/2018 10:26

BakedBeans47 if you’re so sure the public make the right decisions then abide by the first

I don’t think they have made the right decision, it’s a complete clusterfuck of epic proportions!

Yeah I’ll be quaking in my boots at the tide of pensioners taking to the streets

lonelyplanetmum · 06/12/2018 10:47

Rubbish about the pro Brexit marching .All that lot have managed to muster off the sofa so far is about 600 white Middle Aged national front type blokes with a larger police escort.

There may be marches like the Remain ones but probably with less of a turn out. The groups are too disparate. There may be some normal leavers who feel generally disgruntled about austerity and not being heard who protest but for big chunks of the demographic it's not their style.

Looking at the Leavers I know is my friend's rabid leaver Mum going to join the UKIP/ Britain first lot with her elderly Jack Russell ? I doubt it. My FIL won't turn out either.

The right wing, disaster capitalist, low corporate regulation and tax, inherited wealth type Tories opposed to worker's rights won't muster significant numbers to march with them either.

The second plus generation Indian and Pakistani descent families I know who voted Leave (to favour non EU migration) won't be marching with that lot either.

1tisILeClerc · 06/12/2018 11:05

Sunday's planned march in London should be 'interesting'.
Shame BoJo sold off those watercannons, I could quite fancy driving one of those with 'Mars' playing on the ridiculously expensive CD players.

bellinisurge · 06/12/2018 11:08

With any luck it'll piss it down and the wankers will get a soaking.

lynnepot · 06/12/2018 11:11

I've said right from day one that it would be killed off by politcians. May's motion will be defeated in parliament then they'll force another referendum I reckon. That way they can them try and hold no responsibility to killing Brexit.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/12/2018 11:38

Isn’t it Sadie khan who sold off the cannons?

jm90914 · 06/12/2018 11:38

@Deadbudgie

I can see you don’t consider evidence an important part of forming your opinion.

Have you any idea the millions of completely uncontrollable variables that would feed into such a plan? The chances of actually pulling that off would be like winning the lottery.

At least if we don’t leave the Eu then the price of tinfoil won’t be increasing, so you’ll be alright for hats...

1tisILeClerc · 06/12/2018 11:43

BoJo bought them without clearing the fact they were not legally usable in London. Depending on how things go they may have been handy next year.

1tisILeClerc · 06/12/2018 11:45

{With any luck it'll piss it down and the wankers will get a soaking.}
I thought they were the 'cream' of the Leave elite?

bellinisurge · 06/12/2018 11:47

Cream doesn't stand up to being out too long.

Deadbudgie · 06/12/2018 12:09

The arrogance and lack of understanding of the view points and experiences about large swathes of the uk population is the reason the remain side lost in the first place. I see nothing has changed

bellinisurge · 06/12/2018 12:12

Why should I attempt to understand a view point that thinks leaving the EU will immediately gives us jobs and housing and a better funded NHS? When it clearly won't immediately or, in some imagined future.

DarlingNikita · 06/12/2018 12:26

I know this is a serious discussion, but 'Sadie khan' really made me laugh Grin

And yes, he had to sell them off because Johnson bought them without checking the tedious details of their legality and then they ended up in a cupboard with the breadmaker.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/12/2018 12:56

Haha bloody auto correct

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 06/12/2018 15:06

I can’t beieve all these politicians saying ‘Brexit has been stolen’

Who the hell would want to steal that?!
