There's a deal.

The press are over excited.

May has united the country.

Everyone hates it.
(Apart from David Allen Green)

Parliament might yet reject it.

Nothing is yet decided and everything is still to be sorted.

While I hope one day the UK will return, in the meantime this agreement will make a #Brexit possible, while maintaining a close relationship between the EU and UK, a protection of citizens rights and the avoidance of a hard Irish border.

Art 132(1): [...] the Joint Committee may, before 1 July 2020, adopt a single decision extending the transition period up to [31 December 20XX]

That could be 2030 or whenever we next elect a govt capable of either going for Norway +++ (CU + passporting etc)
or Rejoin

MissMalice · 14/11/2018 20:14

So -
We leave the EU
We remain in the CU temporarily, no date agreed, we can’t leave without the EUs agreement
The EU will have more say over our laws/regulations than we do
There’s no solution for the Irish border on a long term basis so basically we’re no closer to an actual proper Brexit because that issue can’t actually be resolved?

Have I got that right?

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2018 20:15

Hell, it could be 2099, to make rejoin inevitable !

prettybird · 14/11/2018 20:15

I always find it interesting which language Barnier uses in his press conference (and get pissed off that the translators talk over him when he's speaking in French Sad).

What is really interesting is that he swapped to English to talk about Ireland.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2018 20:17

MissMalice I suspect we may never get out of the transition period - during which the entire UK remains in the SM + CU + agencies, flights etc - until we Rejoin or go for Norway +++

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 14/11/2018 20:27

Thanks rtb

Struggling to keep up right now!

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2018 20:31

Expat rights

5 years legal residence to end of transition period gives the right to permanent residence
Partners and children under 21 can join them

Change in status, e.g. becoming economically inactive, pensioner etc does not affect right of residence
Absences of up to 5 years without losing permanent residence

DGRossetti posted this link at the end of the last thread. I think it deserves repeating on this one, just in case anyone missed it.
Well done, that lady, for taking the greedy, treacherous, contemptible little worm to task.

Christopher Hopee@christopherhope* (Torygraph)

BREAKING One third of the Cabinet spoke out against the deal tonight at the five hour long meeting - 11 out of 29 ministers in attendance.
Definitely not unanimous approval for Theresa May's Brexit deal.

< depends who the 11 were, how many will now grudgingly accept the deal, how many will resign, how many will do neither - at this stage, May would probably plough on even if all 11 resigned >

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2018 20:41

Me too, smile
I can take EU - MEPs and veto, because I thought we usually used them badly anyway !

I expect the PM would always be seriously consulted over decisions taken at Heads of Govt meetings
and might retain the right that no treaty changes would affect the Uk without its consent

BigChocFrenzy · 14/11/2018 20:42

No Deal means being bent over a barrel in perpetuity by the ERG, Mogg, Redwood, Trump and all who follow them in later years

Hazardswan · 14/11/2018 20:44

My eyes hurt... got to page 60 something skim reading and now Brew

woman11017 · 14/11/2018 20:45

BigChoc they're just fascists deporting my schoolfriends right now.

There's nothing worth reading in that document.

Have to say, mood in the resistance is extremely good.

We've known this stuff for a little while now.

We see them.

Might be wise for others to take a clear look too.

ec.europa.eu/commission/sites/beta-political/files/draft_withdrawal_agreement_0.pdf

It is the best of the various options. We will have to see if Parliament will approve it. If DUP or Scots concerned about fish stop it I suspect they may find the alternatives worse; so it could be a risky business if they don't support it.

Raphael Hogarth @raphael_hogarth
Wow. Article 14(4) of the backstop is... something. Seems to say: ECJ and European Commission to have jurisdiction in the UK in respect of the EU customs code, technical regulations, VAT and excise, agriculture and the environment, single electricity market and state aid.

slightly amazed we have conceded this

Chris Hanretty @ chrishanretty
UK courts continue to use preliminary reference procedure?

Raphael Hogarth @raphael_hogarth
Yes. That's Article 267 TFEU, referenced at the end.

Chris Hanretty @ chrishanretty
That is surprising, and sets up two categories of EU law - continuing persuasive force and still binding

Jim Pickard @pickardje
Straight after the cabinet meeting Philip Hammond, chancellor and Greg Clark, business secretary held a conference call briefing with up to 200 business figures. Hammond thanked the executives for their help in publicising what he called the “horrific” impact of a no deal Brexit.

Officials close to Cabinet say Esther McVey is “on the brink” of resigning. They added that she was “shouted down” by the Cabinet Secretary Mark Sedwill after demanding Cabinet voted on the deal.
