Brexit

Brexiteers, if there was a 'People's Vote' how would you vote?

For me? I'd flatly vote No Deal.

Would others vote to stay in the EU or agree to Teresa May's deal?

Everyone I know who voted Leave would still vote Leave (the same goes for those who voted Remain) so I'd be really curious to see what the outcome of a 2nd referendum would generate.

Not me, but dad and dh voted leave and now both would vote remain. Not necessarily because their views have changed but because it’s all such a shit show.

missmoon · 10/11/2018 08:24

As for the Channel 4 poll.... almost entirely every single poll that was conducted in the lead up to the 2016 vote predicted a Remain win. I actually put a bet on Leave winning and won quite a bit of money.

Pretty much all of the opinion polls before the referendum had a Leave win within their margin of error, so they were right. It’s just that people don’t consider the margin of error when interpreting polls (it’s usually +/- 3).

Also, the crucial point when creating estimates of political outcomes is turnout by group. The problem with the EU ref was that nothing similar had happened for a long time, so there was no way of accurately predicting turnout for different groups. With subsequent polls we have the actual EU ref turnout figures, so can more accurately calculate a new point estimate should the ref be run again. The Channel 4 poll should therefore be more accurate than the pre-ref polls.

I don't believe in opinion polls. They've been consistently wrong for many years (in politics anyway).

You may not believe them, but there is no evidence to show they have been systematically wrong. They very accurately predicted the recent elections in the US, for instance.

Horsfordiansunite · 10/11/2018 08:54

I'm northern and middle class, voted remain. Dp is solidly working class and never been politically engaged as he himself admits. He voted leave and probably still would to my frustration. Not sure whether that's due to bloody stubbornness Grin We regularly discuss matters brexit and he still trots out the same old sound bites. He thinks the government won't let us down and it's all pure scaremongering and hyperbole.... He's just very passive in this regard and not prepared to do any critical thinking Confused

LucheroTena · 10/11/2018 09:27

The thing is, people rightly expect a vote might be held by a government only if the offer has potential to be better than the status quo. Brexit wasn’t. This government should be gone and this should ruin the tories for a generation / for good but hasn’t because of Corbyn.

1tisILeClerc · 10/11/2018 10:04

One of the most weird things about this whole Brexit fiasco is that the lies or exaggerations of the Leave campaigns (particularly) were not challenged robustly, either directly by the Remain campaign or just by a spot of personal 'critical thinking'. For example the UK had/has deals with many parts of the world as part of the free trade agreements it gas as a member of the EU, meaning we trade with the EU at zero tariff rate and at an EU negotiated rate with many other countries, and this is way better than a WTO 'basic' rate.
The money paid as EU membership LOOKS like a large amount to the person in the street but broken down to the approx £200 a year per person and compare it to the vast sums that other things cost it is tiny, approximately 0.7% of GDP.

1tisILeClerc · 10/11/2018 10:05

gas=has obviously!

BlitheringIdiots · 11/11/2018 19:02

We've had a 'people's vote' in 2016. Leave won. Perhaps the question should be put to the millions who couldn't be bothered to vote instead

millsbynight · 11/11/2018 19:11

@missmoon but they didn't accurately predict a Trump win in 2016 did they. I also made a decent chunk of cash betting on a Trump win, especially his win in Florida. Opinion polls just aren't that reliable these days.

OP posts:
Mrsorganmorgan · 11/11/2018 19:34

Remain and I am one of the "old" people. Whole family voted Remain. I don't think it's about me or my generation, I won't be around to see the consequences - it's about my grandchildren.

twofingerstoEverything · 11/11/2018 23:05

I also made a decent chunk of cash betting on a Trump win

Good for you, OP. I'm sure if you put your mind to it, you'll be able to make a 'decent chunk of cash' out of a hard Brexit, along with Rees Mogg and the other shysters. Fuck the rest of the country, eh?

Yaralie · 12/11/2018 19:18

Yes of course if there was a Peoples Vote I would vote REMAIN

woman11017 · 14/11/2018 08:34

Footage going up later, but at 3 days notice there was a rally in London for the People's Vote.

Thousands queued round blocks to get in, tickets were sold out.

I'm northern and middle class. Everyone I know, except two school friends, voted leave.

I didn't, but I am an expat in Switzerland and my work permit is granted easily based on me being an EU citizen. And I live next to the French border, and pop across it regularly for things like playing in a nice park.

Togaandsandals · 15/11/2018 02:40

I wonder if those on here saying they would vote no deal realise this isn’t what most of the leave campaigners asked for. Many promised we could somehow have a Norway type deal without any of the obligations. It was pie in the sky.

Togaandsandals · 15/11/2018 02:42

The money paid as EU membership LOOKS like a large amount to the person in the street but broken down to the approx £200 a year per person and compare it to the vast sums that other things cost it is tiny, approximately 0.7% of GDP.

And also what we get back as being part of the EU is worth much more than the the cost of membership

moredoll · 15/11/2018 03:12

Can I ask those of you who are saying they would vote for no deal what you think it means? Where do you think the UK would be in 10 years? What do you think it would mean in terms of employment rights, for instance?

CoachBombay · 15/11/2018 10:45

I voted leave, however if the option was no deal or no Brexit. I would vote No Brexit.

No Deal is not an option for our economy and prosperity as a country. This government have failed to deliver a good deal if any deal, therefore no Brexit is the option I would go for.

I'd rather forefit my personal principle for the greater good. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

CoachBombay · 15/11/2018 10:47

And I'm a bloody conservative!!!! 😂

MyNameIsArthur · 15/11/2018 21:34

Remain. However, if we were to remain, we need to change our attitude towards the EU. There have been 40+ years of negativity against the EU by our Governments and media. There has always been a them/us attitude and it has always been about what we can get out of it rather than let's work towards a better Europe and friendships and welfare and peace. If we were to remain, we need to embrace our membership and to embrace being European.

umpteennamechanges · 15/11/2018 21:38

Remain

Jitters22 · 15/11/2018 21:40

I voted leave then and I'd vote leave now.

If it's a choice between this deal and no deal - I'd rather have no deal.

thsi · 15/11/2018 21:42

I voted leave before.

I would give anything for another chance.

If given I'd vote remain or shit deal.

No deal shouldn't even be an option.

1tisILeClerc · 15/11/2018 21:45

{Remain. However, if we were to remain, we need to change our attitude towards the EU. }
This exactly.
The UK needs to leave and spend a while in the cold to appreciate what it has lost/is losing. It will be a hard experience.
Unfortunately since the UK has spent so long arsing about and to include maybe a year 'out', serious business will have moved elsewhere so it will demolish the UK completely.

ADisrespectfulWoman · 15/11/2018 21:57

I'm an ardent Brexiteer. I'd vote No Deal.

1tisILeClerc · 15/11/2018 22:02

So you don't want to travel, have a decent health service or safe food for the next 10 years or so?
