Brexit

Brexiteers, if there was a 'People's Vote' how would you vote?

For me? I'd flatly vote No Deal.

Would others vote to stay in the EU or agree to Teresa May's deal?

Everyone I know who voted Leave would still vote Leave (the same goes for those who voted Remain) so I'd be really curious to see what the outcome of a 2nd referendum would generate.

I do not see the problem with there being a second referendum. People have a right to change their minds especially when more facts come to light after their initial decision. If the remain vote was to win in a second referendum, that would be the new democratic will of the people. If the leave vote was still to win, that too would be the democratic will of the people.

bellinisurge · 27/11/2018 16:50

My fear of a second referendum is that No Deal would be an option and that people would be daft enough to vote for it.
Yes, I know how that sounds but there is a reason why we don't govern by referenda.
No deal would be the Boaty McBoatface option.

Hesta54 · 27/11/2018 17:13

bellinisurge, what options would you have ?

jasjas1973 · 27/11/2018 19:13

By the time of any potential vote, Mays deal will be long dead (and nothing in its place or they'd not be a PV) so the choice will be No Deal or Remain and regardless of the outcome, i think that is a good choice.

MerdedeBrexit · 28/11/2018 12:32

Just trying out my new username, but crashing in to say I completely agree with IdaBWells above, apart, perhaps, from the Putin aspect, though you're probably right about that, too Grin

1tisILeClerc · 28/11/2018 12:44

What is most weird is that for hundreds of years Britain (UK) has had pretty strong leadership, if wrong on occasions, but now we seem to have a whole government 'machine' running around like headless chickens with their pants on their head, apart from Mrs May who seems hell bent on some interplanetary mission.
Are they all taking bribes? Have they put drugs into the water at Westminster? Where is any sense of diplomacy and careful weighing of the options?

bellinisurge · 28/11/2018 13:29

My options in what I hope is the unlikely event of a second referendum would be "TM Deal" or "Remain ".
I don't want any version of No Deal anywhere near a second referendum. But it probably would be on it if we had a second referendum. So I don't want a second referendum.
We should take this shit deal or Remain.

1tisILeClerc · 28/11/2018 13:36

Since to uphold 'democracy' by leaving completely is bordering on economic suicide it is mildly problematic.

Quietrebel · 29/11/2018 10:47

May banging on about her deal or no deal is blackmail.

I've never called leavers stupid, but anyone even contemplating no deal has to be spectacularly stupid or cynical.

Yaralie · 29/11/2018 11:01

TM told us "no-deal is better than a bad deal" and now she is trying to scare us into accepting a very bad deal be saying the alternative is a chaotic, catastrophic no-deal. She seems prepared to inflict irrevocable damage on the country to make a point, which is wholly inconsistent with her previous statement.

None of this need happen. Article 50 should be revoked. The only sane option is to REMAIN in the EU.

Hesta54 · 29/11/2018 11:38

Yaralie But people want to leave the EU, but it looks like not with TM deal

Yaralie · 29/11/2018 11:44

Some people want to leave no matter how much it costs. But surely now they are better informed about the dire consequenses, many who did vote leave will realise they were misled and change their view?

I for one have never believed that everyone who voted leave was stupid.

Hesta54 · 29/11/2018 11:49

Isn’t such a shame that we’ve been locked in a cage that we can’t just walk out of, why did parliament put the U.K. into an institution that you cannot get out of ?

1tisILeClerc · 29/11/2018 11:57

{Isn’t such a shame that we’ve been locked in a cage that we can’t just walk out of, why did parliament put the U.K. into an institution that you cannot get out of ?}
If you have a mortgage or a loan for anything, try applying your reasoning to your scenario.
Of course the UK can leave, but it takes time and intelligence.
The latter is absent completely, and the former has been wasted although another 5 years or so may just about get the majority of aspects covered.

Hesta54 · 29/11/2018 12:05

1tisILeClerc If I pay my mortgage off, I walk away, if I cannot afford it, I could sell it and repay my mortgage, at the very least I could just hand the keys back in and settle any outstanding bill, I’m not locked in indefinitely
Yes I can see your point about the lack of intelligence of Are parliament

1tisILeClerc · 29/11/2018 12:11

The UK is not locked in indefinitely, but it needs to pay off the bills and actually negotiate. Failing to pay the bills would set the credit rating to almost Zero, and no other countries would offer anything like a half decent 'deal'.

AutumnCrow · 29/11/2018 14:17

I could just hand the keys back in and settle any outstanding bill

That is appalling financial advice

BorisBogtrotter · 29/11/2018 15:21

"Yaralie But people want to leave the EU, but it looks like not with TM deal"

People want to leave the EU but with the no cost, all benefit deal sold to them by the leave campaigns.

Which is why people use the unicorn analogy.

1tisILeClerc · 29/11/2018 15:58

Indeed, although 'handouts' from the EU were not usually recognised, the less tangible things such as clean beaches and high quality goods got no recognition at all.

Vicky1990 · 29/11/2018 17:16

Just a small divergence from the conversation.
France and Germany have proposed the formation of an EU army.
My feeling is why, what is it for, and if we have one at some point it will be used.
Russia is a threat again under its dangerou leader Putin, his forces are behaving belligerently and pushing the boundaries of civilised behaviour.
He sees the expansion eastward of the EU as a threat to his sphere of influence, if this is backed up by an EU army he will be forced to push back.
The EU is a reminder of the days of empire, forever trying to expand and influence the world.
I never voted for this years ago, it was supposed to be about trade, it has now morphed into a power ego trip that will end in tears.

1tisILeClerc · 29/11/2018 17:59

Vicky
Are you happy for the Eastern Europeans to be trampled by Putin?
They have already experienced Russian control, they didn't like it.
Trump and to an extent NATO cannot be counted on to protect European interests.

recently · 29/11/2018 18:16

I don't get the hysteria about the European army. Do you really think the EU is going to start invading countries or could it possibly be that they want a stronger, more cooperative EU to help us stand up to our rather scary neighbours? I'm not sure why the Brexiteers think the UK is so big and strong that it will get the upper hand in any trade deals and any military conflict. And people here are saying the EU has a big ego!!!Confused

@Yaralie

But surely now they are better informed about the dire consequenses, many who did vote leave will realise they were misled and change their view?

I know more people who've lost their jobs because of Brexit than I do people who've changed their minds on the vote.

bellinisurge · 29/11/2018 19:00

Why is it so dreadful to have mutual defence arrangements? Especially with Trump being so flaky.
