Westministenders: Game Over?

May has a draft deal which she has presented to the Cabinet. Woohooo!

The catch is, it doesn't mention the Irish Border. Just a minor point. This is because she has no way forward on it. There are so many red lines from so many different groups shes tangled up in knots with them.

She wrote a letter to the DUP to tell them to suck it up. Arlene has told her to stick it. And if she hadn't told her to stick it, Scottish Tories would have told her to stick it. David Davis has told her to stick it. Rees-Moog has told her to stick it. And this afternoon, one of the Ministers for Queues at Dover, Jo Johnson, told her to stick it and that we need a people's vote. On top of that, her plans to try and get cross party support and get the Labour Party to support it, have suffered a blow as Momentum voted to tell May to stick it.

In fact it might be harder to think of people who WILL support it.

Not that this is a surprise. We've all be aware of this for some time. Is it finally game over?

The government have at least seemingly realised that this month is the last opportunity they have for a deal. Dominic has also realised that Dover is quite close to France and this is quite a big deal.

The EU pushed back their meeting until the 27th. This coincidentally is the same day there is a decision over a50 at the ECJ and the right to revoke.

If May can't get her act together over the Irish Border, this might yet prove to be the last option open to her, to prevent Brexmaggeddon.

Jo Johnson is not too far from the mark with vassalage or chaos? Take your pick Mrs May.

Have a good march pretzels thank you!
Loads of people are posting their postcards. Here's one:

Westministenders: Game Over?
BigChocFrenzy · 09/11/2018 19:59

Yup, doesn't look good stripy but Leavers still seem to believe in magical deals that the UK will have after Brexit

Brexiteers fear price rises, not return of Irish border

https://www.politico.eu/article/poll-irish-border-low-on-list-of-uk-voters-brexit-concerns/

Poll for POLITICO finds nearly half of voters believe that Brexit’s economic legacy will be positive a decade hence.
...
Few things are likely to change the minds of the British public on Brexit — and the Irish border almost certainly isn’t one of them.

< which is what dooms the Union: few people give a shit about NI - some are still confused about whether NI, RoI, or both, are in the UK >

Westministenders: Game Over?
BigChocFrenzy · 09/11/2018 20:02

I don't think NI should be in the UK, but I deeply care what happens to them and the RoI

MyBrexitIsIll · 09/11/2018 20:06

I cant quite believe that no one has pointed to our MPs that voting AGAINST TM Deal is actually voting FOR a No Deal Brexit.

Are they really ready to do that???

(Not saying her deal is good. But in this case, I just believe any deal is better than no deal....)

SwedishEdith · 09/11/2018 20:11

I cant quite believe that no one has pointed to our MPs that voting AGAINST TM Deal is actually voting FOR a No Deal Brexit.

I think they must (some, anyway) and assume they're hoping for some sort of last minute chaos = Art 50 revoked or extended for another ref or GE.

woman11017 · 09/11/2018 20:14

That's why Johnson the Jo is advocating Peoples vote with option to remain.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/11/2018 20:16

Blair is urging MPs to vote AGAINST

He is either hoping for a last minute Remain

or a No Deal with a quick Rejoin - as Leavers couldn't complain Brexit wasn't "pure" enough

SwedishEdith · 09/11/2018 20:19

Boaty McBoatface should have been a warning about referendums and people treating voting like it's the X-Factor.

HerLadySheep · 09/11/2018 20:19

I think we're at a terrible impasse now, and I don't believe our MP's can or will vote for what I believe may be TM's proposal.
This will leave us in a dreadful position, no means of exiting the EU, no means of having any say on the rules, but having to follow them.
The alternative of no-deal is as bad if not worse.
I feel sick at the prospect, it's like watching a car crash in slow motion.
Our only hope is a reversal of this hideous mess

MyBrexitIsIll · 09/11/2018 20:21

A quick rejoin?
That’s a bloody big risk.
Because tbh, if I was at the place of the eU, I’m not sure I would want the Uk to rejoin. Surely, history has already shown that it could actually be HARD to join the EU?

Hazardswan · 09/11/2018 20:21

I can't cope thinking about deal/no deal commons vote at the moment.

I just copied the tweet in my letter.

Westministenders: Game Over?
SwedishEdith · 09/11/2018 20:22

I'm going to predict now that Jo Johnson is a future Tory leader. His wife gives him extra 'not-mad' credibility and compassion.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/11/2018 20:22

643 MPs can vote (excl Sinn Fein)

I found & edited this table of the various parties, but can't even fill in the Labour or Tory numbers who would vote for / against a Deal

For a vote of No Confidence - if / after the HoC vote down May's deal - I also don't know about the DUP !

I've got all SNP, LDems & Plaid marked as against.

Any thoughts ?

Mistigri · 09/11/2018 20:22

Does anyone else get that feeling that the wheels are coming off?

Johnson going, Raab making an utter fool of himself, government failing to shut down the Scottish court case about withdrawing A50.

And Corbyn seems to have climbed into the toaster and pressed the on switch.

I am feeling just a tiny bit more optimistic tonight.

plaidlife · 09/11/2018 20:24

Unless there is a change of leadership in both political parties I don't see the point of a ge. Both sets of leadership want Brexit, if they cannot currently sort out a Brexit what does another GE bring? In our current political system voting for a 3rd party is very inefficient in England.

BestIsWest · 09/11/2018 20:27

I’ve just been reminded I need to write my postcard. Thank you.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/11/2018 20:27

There's no point in any of this:
Brexit / No Deal / GE ..

Problem is, if the deal gets voted down, Corbyn will immediately call for a vote of No Confidence

Then if neither May nor he can get at least Confidence & Supply - which they won't without either the DUP, or MPs crossing the floor - then it is automatically a GE.

lonelyplanetmum · 09/11/2018 20:28

I just had one car journey and there are 90+ posts on a new thread? I obsessed with this debacle and I can't keep up!

BigChocFrenzy · 09/11/2018 20:30

This uncertainty and probable chaos as March approaches, would scare off any exporting business without VERY strong reasons to stay in the UK

Somerville · 09/11/2018 20:30

Does anyone else get that feeling that the wheels are coming off?

Also the DUP's flat - and very public - no.

MyBrexitIsIll · 09/11/2018 20:31

What’s the point of a vote of no confidence and a GE when a deal has to be agreed by the end of the month?
Might as well give the brexiters what they want now.
Or maybe that’s what Corbyn actually wants wo saying it? He is pro leave isn’t he?

There is no more time for discussion and agreement and negotiation. Time is running out.

Hazardswan · 09/11/2018 20:37

Even if a GE is called or there's a successful vote for no confidence then what? Corbyn? He's a let down. I dont believe lib dems will get enough votes. So a new cons with a new leader or mr courgette corbyn....grrreat. All this personality politics B.S. and people's lives are disintergrating and if brexit goes ahead the UK as four will disintergrate to.

I need to keep my fingers in my ears and over my eyes!

Unfortunately Corbyn’s already thrown in the towel.

'We can't stop Brexit,' says Jeremy Corbyn.

borntobequiet · 09/11/2018 20:49

Corbyn’s not getting it. I bet lots of Labour MPs are...
