Westministenders: Game Over?

May has a draft deal which she has presented to the Cabinet. Woohooo!

The catch is, it doesn't mention the Irish Border. Just a minor point. This is because she has no way forward on it. There are so many red lines from so many different groups shes tangled up in knots with them.

She wrote a letter to the DUP to tell them to suck it up. Arlene has told her to stick it. And if she hadn't told her to stick it, Scottish Tories would have told her to stick it. David Davis has told her to stick it. Rees-Moog has told her to stick it. And this afternoon, one of the Ministers for Queues at Dover, Jo Johnson, told her to stick it and that we need a people's vote. On top of that, her plans to try and get cross party support and get the Labour Party to support it, have suffered a blow as Momentum voted to tell May to stick it.

In fact it might be harder to think of people who WILL support it.

Not that this is a surprise. We've all be aware of this for some time. Is it finally game over?

The government have at least seemingly realised that this month is the last opportunity they have for a deal. Dominic has also realised that Dover is quite close to France and this is quite a big deal.

The EU pushed back their meeting until the 27th. This coincidentally is the same day there is a decision over a50 at the ECJ and the right to revoke.

If May can't get her act together over the Irish Border, this might yet prove to be the last option open to her, to prevent Brexmaggeddon.

Jo Johnson is not too far from the mark with vassalage or chaos? Take your pick Mrs May.

While we're on things Spanish, it's worth a head-wobble to remember that Spain remained a Fascist dictatorship after the UK joined the EEC

Talkstotrees · 12/11/2018 16:37

GrinGrinGrin

Talkstotrees · 12/11/2018 16:38

That was at the JC Inaction Man - not the fascists in Spain.

OlennasWimple · 12/11/2018 16:46

Blimey - Lord Lester (Lib Dem) to be suspended until 2022!

Is the Parliamentary investigation in Keith Vaz still on hold, does anyone know?

bellinisurge · 12/11/2018 16:46

Inaction Man is fantastic! At least the concept is. Obviously not the actual JC.

ClashCityRocker · 12/11/2018 16:54

I just don't understand how the opposition aren't making mince meat of the tories right now.

It would be too fecking easy for anyone halfway competent.

I suspect therein lies the problem.

Because after Brexit, the UK won't be in the EU. So businesses (such as Google) will be faced with a complex UK tax, or (currently) no equivalent EU tax. It's not rocket science to see how that will simply cause Google to rearrange affairs to dodge the UK tax.

The tax is intended to apply to multinational businesses, whether they're based in Birmingham, Brussels, Bahrain or Baltimore. The whole point is that they can currently avoid UK tax just by rearranging their affairs but that they won't be able to if the tax is introduced. It won't matter if they move their businesses out of the UK if they still derive significant turnover from their UK users.

Did anyone see Pestons tweet saying a cabinet member said they couldn't understand why the Eu27 would risk a no deal? Words fail me for these absolute morons in power.

1tisILeClerc · 12/11/2018 17:11

For a nasty moment I was wondering if there is a picture in the lines of the above with Mrs May as 'Indecisive Girl'. The prospect is putting me off my tea however.

GD12 · 12/11/2018 17:12

Here we go.....

NEW: Senior ministers led by Dominic Raab tell Theresa May no deal is preferable to the current offer from the EU t.co/xDW4miRwx2

GD12 · 12/11/2018 17:14

Looks like things are about to get really crazy. Buckle up.

1tisILeClerc · 12/11/2018 17:20

Before that tweet came up I was about to say 'Meanwhile on a failing Island state, somewhere near* Europe'............

  • distances may vary. Lo and behold the man himself popped up!
borntobequiet · 12/11/2018 17:20

Ouch, think this week is when everything goes to shit...I shall be away until Sat soaking up a bit of sun, which I can do at this time of year since I retired from school teaching (my FE job doesn’t run as per the academic year).
Generally when I go away I leave electronic devices (apart from very basic phone) behind - might have to take trusty iPad this time though.

My Oxford Modern English dictionary has as the definition of nationalism

  1. a a patriotic feeling, principles, etc b an extreme form of this; chauvinism.
  2. a policy of national independence.

I identify with 1a and 2 but not 1b

It's about a dog (or several actually).

Hazardswan · 12/11/2018 17:53

Will we post brexit be like Spain with our politicans? Something to look forward to if we all make it out alive...

Awww Sad someone needs to go love the dog. Also a helpful reminder I need to stockpile dog food.

sleepydeprivy · 12/11/2018 18:05

Delurking. Whatever happens, if there is a GE, I am NOT going to be able to vote Lib Dem after all. The email Sal Brinton sent out about supporting trans rights has sadly changed my mind. Sad

here goes.........

As a Liberal Democrat there are few things about which I feel more strongly.

In the last year:

More than a third of trans people in the UK were victims of a hate crime
Two thirds have experienced depression
More than a third have self-harmed
Almost half have thought about taking their own life
More than one in ten have attempted to
The experiences of many Trans people is hard to hear.

And it makes me so angry, because it is 2018 and we should be better than this.

This week it is Transgender Awareness Week.

This week, Liberal Democrats will speak with one voice: Trans rights are human rights.

Will you help us?

Here are three things you can do right now:

Join our campaign: Trans Rights are Human Rights: libdems.org.uk/trans

Add a frame to your Facebook profile, saying that you support trans rights: facebook.com/profilepicframes/

Share my blog post on trans rights: libdems.org.uk/trans-rights-are-human-rights

This summer in particular, our trans friends have had to defend their right to exist. This week, we can do some of the heavy-lifting for them.

Very best wishes to you on Transgender Awareness Week.

No thanks Angry Lib Dem no longer speak for me. Brexit or no Brexit Sad

Peregrina · 12/11/2018 18:21

I am shocked too. Will I help? No.
I think there are many more important battles to fight, but I suppose if they mean people who are genuinely intersex and have problems then I sympathise, but men 'identifying' as women because it suits them - no.

Does this make me a bigot?

Are the lib dems any different from Labour or conservatives over so called trans rights? I thought the three were being competively right on?

Icantreachthepretzels · 12/11/2018 18:32

I really hope there's not a GE - unless Labour don't put brexit in their manifesto. I'm not having my vote skewed to the '80% of people voted for a brexit party' again ... but the hideous slimy toad who is my mp only holds his seat by a couple of a hundred votes. I bet a couple of hundred pensioners have died in my constituency since May 2017 (heartless, I know - but ageing voters are the curse of the tories). To get him out, I have to vote labour. But if I vote labour I'm apparently supporting brexit.

And there isn't a political party out there that seems to actually understand what a woman is. (though one might hope that being added to terf blocker would remind Caroline Lucas)
