Westministenders: Game Over?

May has a draft deal which she has presented to the Cabinet. Woohooo!

The catch is, it doesn't mention the Irish Border. Just a minor point. This is because she has no way forward on it. There are so many red lines from so many different groups shes tangled up in knots with them.

She wrote a letter to the DUP to tell them to suck it up. Arlene has told her to stick it. And if she hadn't told her to stick it, Scottish Tories would have told her to stick it. David Davis has told her to stick it. Rees-Moog has told her to stick it. And this afternoon, one of the Ministers for Queues at Dover, Jo Johnson, told her to stick it and that we need a people's vote. On top of that, her plans to try and get cross party support and get the Labour Party to support it, have suffered a blow as Momentum voted to tell May to stick it.

In fact it might be harder to think of people who WILL support it.

Not that this is a surprise. We've all be aware of this for some time. Is it finally game over?

The government have at least seemingly realised that this month is the last opportunity they have for a deal. Dominic has also realised that Dover is quite close to France and this is quite a big deal.

The EU pushed back their meeting until the 27th. This coincidentally is the same day there is a decision over a50 at the ECJ and the right to revoke.

If May can't get her act together over the Irish Border, this might yet prove to be the last option open to her, to prevent Brexmaggeddon.

Jo Johnson is not too far from the mark with vassalage or chaos? Take your pick Mrs May.

The Vicar mentioned Brexit in his sermon yesterday, at the Remembrance service I attended.

woman Dreadful that your friend with terminal cancer has to worry about her meds
Do tell her that Westministenders are rooting for her and everyone else dependent on vital meds 💐

BigChocFrenzy · 12/11/2018 08:03

pretty I sometimes disagree with you, but I've never been offended
I'm sure we'd be pals in rl, as with most Westministenders🙂

I wonder how much thought the Government has given to childcare and schools after Brexit. Yes, that is a rhetorical question.

Thanks to their cuts and Austerity measures, both sectors are struggling to cope with low funding and rising costs, and have been for some time. They have been cut to the bone and have nothing left to give.

I am currently wondering how I will feed my own children, let alone those who come to me for childcare. I'm sure other providers will be in the same boat. One of the options I have to consider is requesting that parents provide their own food and resources. I'm aware that some already have to do this.
As more providers go out of business, will the Government's old plan of forcing tiny children into schools for care be implemented? Parents are going to have to take whatever they can get in the way of childcare and be grateful for it.

That's going to affect the general workforce as they try to find even the most basic care for their children while they work and pay higher costs for it.

I've heard no advice from the Government, so I guess they must still be working out that complicated carpark in Dover and haven't considered us at all (now there's a surprise!).

Caught an interview on the Business section of Today with someone high up whose name I didn't catch describing that warehousing for supermarket stockpiling was at its limits. He said something that struck me, which was that JIT deliveries meant the current "warehouses" are lorries in transit on motorways.
Prettybird I'm 1/4 Scottish. I'm fuming too on Scotland's behalf. If I were fully Scottish I'd be all out for Independence.

IrenetheQuaint · 12/11/2018 08:20

After Brexit the public services will be even more screwed than they are already. Though I suspect the government will tear up all their fiscal targets and allow much higher borrowing (which will then bite us on the arse further down the road as our economy inexorably shrinks).

Talkstotrees · 12/11/2018 08:32

Born, I worked in the freight sector during the 80s and 90s - much was made of our mobile warehouses, aka shipping containers.

It is probably obvious that I find Woman's occasional digs at men a bit tiresome as Brexit is not primarily an issue between women and men and as the leaders of Scotland, NI (well Arlene Foster) and England are women who could in theory bang their own heads together and resolve most of the nonsense.
If the powers for devolution were properly distributed, Scotland, Wales and NI would not 'need' to be independent and I think Pretty might gave some glasses that have a tint of rose about the prospect, but the abysmal way that Westminster is dealing with Brexit and many other matters does reinforce the idea of breaking up the union completely. At the moment the big issue is 'how buggered' is the UK going to be and what can be done to stop it.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 12/11/2018 08:39

Did anyone else see Justine Greening on BBC Breakfast saying that she couldn’t see parliament voting through TM’s Deal but that they also wouldn’t vote through No Deal? What’s wrong with these people? Why is it so hard to grasp that No Deal is a default position not something that has to be voted through?

BigChocFrenzy · 12/11/2018 08:41

I have to agree with pretty on this:
Scottish voters in the Indy ref were conned when they claimed Indy would mean leaving the EU

IndyRef was another referendum won by lies and fake promises

The EU would have no principle problem accepting Scotland as a member

Spain - who was the country that was thought to oppose Scottish membership of the EU - said more than a year ago that they wouldn't oppose.
There is no roadblock

I still think that economically Scotland would do better even in a much poorer UK
However, after the way they have been ignored since the Indy ref and the EU ref, I would understand if voters there chose to leave a Union which has so little regard for them.

Contrast how the EU is supporting its member Ireland in Brexit,
defending it from Westminister bullying,
even though economically for the other 26 members a deal with a hard NI border is just what they need.
Without this issue, imo the WA would already have been signed

EEA / EFTA might better suit an independent Scotland, especially re the English border issue
However, that is all for Scotland to decide

And Starmer has just said this, (bound to be contradicted in a few minutes!)
Keir Starmer says Brexit 'can be stopped', contradicting Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn

Why is it so hard to grasp that No Deal is a default position not something that has to be voted through?

Although it is the default position, Parliament can still vote against it. The question is whether they can force the government to withdraw the A50 notification, or force the government to negotiate a specific type of deal (no time for the latter though).

BigChocFrenzy · 12/11/2018 08:49

Babooshka That is a worrying sign that MPS - especially Remainers - haven't grasped that

No Deal will automatically happen, unless a WA is signed and approved by the UK and the EU

Raab's admission of ignorance - without shame - shows even the Cabinet lack basic knowledge that Westministenders have had for 2 years

MPs seem even more ignorant than Ministers
BUT
I think the ERG realised a long time ago that if they can scare off the PM from bringing a deal to the HoC, then they have won and it's the hard right No Deal Dream Scenario.

1tisILeClerc · 12/11/2018 08:50

JRM's 'idea' that the UK should just give £20 Billion to the EU and walk out now was being floated at the weekend. No mention of what happens to the border necessary somewhere near Ireland.
Mr Macron's problem is that he has a more 'non French' view of how the EU should be, which is more German/Dutch/British. He needs some of his cunning plans to work out soon, to pull him away from some of his naysayers.

1tisILeClerc · 12/11/2018 08:53

{BCF he cruelty of those pushing through the crash out is unbelievable.}
That will be MRS May then?
Interesting that MRS Merkel manages to do pretty well in Germany.

Getting ready for March 19

Westministenders: Game Over?
SingingBabooshkaBadly · 12/11/2018 08:55

And of course, Bigchoc, it wasn’t picked up on by the interviewer.

I only half caught the next bit of the interview but I’m pretty sure she also called for a People’s Vote with three options, May’s deal, Remain and leave with no deal. The idea of giving the great British public the option of actively choosing No Deal sounds to me like the very worst idea anyone has had since dreaming up the referendum in the first place.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/11/2018 08:58

MissMoon No_ Deal does NOT require an HoC_ vote

The govt only have to bring in a bill if there IS a deal
Otherwise, time runs out and No Deal happens automatically

The only real weapon the HoC have is to pass a vote of No Confidence
Would sufficient Tories really vote down their own govt and bring in Corbyn ?

BigChocFrenzy · 12/11/2018 08:59

The HoC can block bills, but they have no power to force the govt to take any specific action
They can only bring the government down

Raab's admission of ignorance - without shame

It was worse than that - he was telling us as though he was imparting some great secret.

woman11017 · 12/11/2018 09:02

especially Remainers - haven't grasped that

The most dangerous group of people, arguably, atm in britain atm BCF are those who because of the unconsciously charmed life they have led because of various types of privilege, are unable and unwilling to see what is about to happen and is happening now. This includes those who expect things to go on as they are, ostensibly 'remainers'.

Strategically, I still admire the Machiavells who've managed to achieve this.

Practically, I don't know how to make the naive, blinkered and ignorant see what is actually happening.

Peregrina · 12/11/2018 09:07

I think the ERG realised a long time ago that if they can scare off the PM from bringing a deal to the HoC, then they have won and it's the hard right No Deal Dream Scenario.

I will try to put a positive spin on this - they might find in doing so that they are 'doing a Cameron' i.e. taking an action which he thought would shut up one group of people, but instead set of a cascade of much more serious actions in train, and destroyed his career in the process.

Once the ERG get their dream 'No deal' they will suddenly realise that it comes with a lot of other baggage which will eventually damage them too. Well, I can live in hope.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/11/2018 09:08

LeClerc I'm not sure if JRM is serious, or just posturing to blame the EU later

The EU have all along stated the 3 prerequisites for the WA: expat rights, exit bill, no hard NI border
Without those, there can be no WA and hence no transition or trade framework

The exit bill is about double what he proposes, he didn't mention expat rights and he ignores the NI border
For NI, he's suggested checks like in the Troubles, totally disregarding the GFA - he must be the DUP's house Catholic

There's a new ThreeBlokesInAPub video up on YouTube. Take a look if you get chance.
